Question Posted Thursday September 18 2008, 2:37 am
Okay well i'm 16 years old and i want to start dancing lessons.
I did about a year of ballet but that was when i was 6.
I know all the good dancers have been dancing since they were really young and so i need some advice.
I would like to know if its a good idea. I really love dancing and i want to take lessons in contemporary or hip hop or something but would they even let me? Is there anyone else who started dancing late in their childhood?
I'd also like to know how much lessons would be if anyone can give me an estimate.
Any other helpful advice would be gratefully appreciated.
Additional info, added Thursday September 18 2008, 2:39 am: Also, could anyone tell me some styles of dancing that are really good to do. I dont know alot apart from jazz, tap, hip hop and contemporary and im not interested in partner dancing. And if possible maybe things involved in the styles of dancing. . Ballet is pretty hard to jump in when you're 16 (you've hit the nail dead on with the "dancers start when they're young") but other stuff isn't nearly so hard. Tap is challenging no matter when yous start, and anything with flexibility could present a challenge, depending on how flexible you already are.
Studios will totally let you start classes. I think the easiest ones to start when you're older are ballroom (but that's partner, which you said you didn't want to do) and probably contemporary or modern dance. Prices are going to vary depending on how many classes you take each week, the studio etc. Per class, they're likely to start around $10 and go up from there, also depending on how long the class is. As for how much lessons are, it really varies and depends on where you live and what type of classes you're taking.
I myself just started taking beginning dance for my gym class, and we are learning ballet, jazz, and modern, so I'd guess that one of those areas is a good starting point. We're just finishing up ballet, and I suggest taking it because it's really basic and simple, yet very fun and entertaining. As far as what we learned, I found this website and it pretty much covered it all:
