A Ten Month Old

Question Posted Monday August 16 2004, 10:56 pm

I'm not to sure what this falls under but I wanted peoples thoughts. I love kids, honest to God they are the best thing that has happened in my life (I don't have any). This lady at my church is having a baby in Oct. and has a 10 month old who is smaller for his size, anyways he will be staying with us more then likely. I have a two story house along with basement stairs and breakable stuff. Our house is not by any means baby-proof. Does anyone have any good ideas that don't cost a ton of money because this is probably only going to happen once and I don't expect on having children for another 15 years...LOL THANKS!
Megan

Going to Wal-mart, or target or some store of that sort will definatly get you on the right foot. I babysit a lot and I also have a three year old brother. I suggest gates in front of the stairs, some cushions for the side of tables, and basicly moving breakable/dangerous items to a higher level. Good luck and have fun with the little one!

Well... I have a 14 month old.. and my house is pretty similar to yours... But what we did was we bought the baby gates and them up at the steps.. and a couple other places where there were chances of her getting her.. or a place where there is breakable stuff... my daughter doesnt play with the outlets or anything but they have the covers that go into the outlets that arent in use to keep the baby from putting stuff into them... I hope this helped..

You dont have to buy too many things. The first step is just to choose one room in your house that you and the baby will be spending most of your time and baby proof it and you can follow the rest of my advice in your whole house if you want. First put away treasured glass things and all other fragile stuff. Get down on your hands and knees and make sure there nothing under tables or anything that could be bad.Move houseplants that can be toxic, Close the bathroom door, Have lots of toys to keep the baby focused on, tie up dangling blinds or curtains with a twisttie, and last but not least invest in a few simple plastic outlet covers, doorknob covers and table-corner guards; these can be put on and taken off in a couple of seconds, and can minimize the risk of electrical shock and injury. Have fun!

The outlet plugs can be gotten at the dollar store and usually come two to a pack. In addition to what every one else is saying, be sure that all of your dangerous chemicals are out of reach.

If he's only going to stay with you once, you really don't have to baby-proof the whole house. Just choose the safest room in the house, and move any breakable objects to a higher level, so he can't reach it. Also make sure you block off any stairways. I have one year old twin nephews and I use the kitchen chairs turned on their sides, to block off the hallway and the kitchen. If there's a coffee table in the room you can pad the corners with towels and masking tape.

I hope this helps and feel free to drop any other questions in my inbox.

this is an easy one, first move anything really fragile up higher onto shelves, or completely store it in a closet, then i would say have one set room for the baby to be in, and move the furniture around according to the "dangerous" level on it O:-) your the judge for that one!! GOOD LUCK BABE!!

I don't really know what your question is asking...but if you're asking how to baby-proof your house, it's really not that hard. Um just pick up little things that they could choke on, and only worry about things that are reachable by the baby. Also, watch the wiring. Oh yeah, and the only thing that would cost money is the plastic things that fill in electrical sockets...those are pretty cheap and i would get some because you don't want them to get electricuted by sticking their little fingers in those. Also, if you have some type of gate thing for the stairs at night or whenever they're up there, get that. They're also pretty reasonable to buy, and remember they can be stored for 15 years and re-used ;-) lol

xASH answered Monday August 16 2004, 11:21 pm:
you should block unused eletrical outlets so he won't stick he fingers in the socket. and get one of those gate thingys for the top of your stairs so he won't fall down. i think you should have the locks higher up on your doors or something so he won't open the doors or something. well thats all i know. good luck!
