I am 18 years of age. My family and I have dreamed of moving to another country for 12 years. We finally have the opportunity to do so and we have taken it. However, my sister now has a boyfriend and is threatening to stay behind. She wants to marry him as soon as possible. She is 16 years old. This boy is 19, has quit school, has been unemployed for most of the last 3 years as he is continually fired, and is known to lie frequently. How can i make her see that she is too young for this and that he is not worth giving up her family and her future for?

First off, do her parents like him at all? and if they dont there really isnt much she can do bout it b/c she is underage. but that is all that i can tell you to do, is to talk to her about it and explain to her what he is like. Ask her if she were to get married tommarow, how her and her husband plan to support themselves. She is still in school, and he is unemployed and without a diploma. Does she plan on living in poverty with this man, because that is what would happen. Ask her what she wants out of a marrige, and what she sees for their future, and how do they plan to reach that goal? Maybe if can help her see what happens after a wedding, she may have different feelings. Remind her she is still young, and has a lot for self discovery yet, and this move is acturally a wonderful opportunity to grow and mature. [ jbdreamer's advice column | Ask jbdreamer A Question ]
AskAmanda answered Monday June 21 2004, 12:24 pm: Your sister is going through a very familiar stage. SHe is rebelling because it will get her noticed more. I am also 18 and my sister is 15. she thinks she is in love and wants to marry this boy who will be 18. He to, has the job problem. he also dropped out of school and ironically he is 3 years older than my sister. It is very common for the younger sibling to feel detatched from the rest of the family. But since she is only 16 and cannot provide for herself yet, your parents still maintain control of her life. Unless she becomes emancipated, but then she would have to prove to the court system that she is able to provide for herself alone. Older guys have a way of coming over younger girls. But don't worry. there are lots of things that you and your parents could do. What is the legal age for sex where you are at? If worst comes to worst you or your parents could always get him for statutory rape. Then your sister would have absolutly no choice. SHe would have to leave with you and the rest of your family. Hope i helped. [ AskAmanda's advice column | Ask AskAmanda A Question ]

She might say things such as : " But you don't know him as I do" or " He isn't like that, I'm in love with him". What I would do is talk to her and be gentle to her feelings. As an older sister you probably realize that if they do get married at this age and he is like what you've said their marriage may not last long and she will get hurt. Maybe tell her your experinces with guys before, it helps. If she starts yelling be calm. Understand that it's not your fault, this is her choice. And no one can make decisions for her. If she really feels this is the right one, don't try to hold her back. I know you are trying to protect her as much as you can but you can't do a lot about this. Just try to encourage her to do the right thing and support her. I wouldn't expect a sudden change from her, unless she really understands what you're saying. She is young and has her whole life ahead of her, there is so much she can do with it. If marriage is something she wants and she loves this boy with all of her heart it would be such a hard time trying to make her think otherwise. I hope she comes around. Maybe she is afraid of moving away from him, and so she is just saying she wants to get married to make you and your family stop from moving. It's crazy but my sister is 15 almost 16 now and she tends to be in those moods where you don't care about your family. Good luck trying to convince her! Best wishes! talktotay answered Monday June 21 2004, 12:04 pm: I think that you should tell her that if she wants to be sitting around waiting hand and foot on this jerk, then she can. But she has known her family for 16 years, her his 19. Her is to old and around this age they are complete jerks. That she will get her feelings hurt and who knows what this guy is hiding. He has no job (they need money for bills) Has quit school (needs edu. for jobs which = money =bills) and lies! what if he comes home one night and is drunk and has lipstick all over his face, and smells like perfume, and says, i went to my old gf's house. We did nothing, and is lying? then what? this guy is not right for her. and she knows it. [ talktotay's advice column | Ask talktotay A Question ]
