I got a job, how do I make the best impression?

Question Posted Wednesday February 25 2004, 12:56 am

I got a job at a pizza restaurant. I've worked for the same chain several years ago (a different location). I filled out the application online, made some nice customer comments about that particular location because it's my favorite place, and the owner called me last night! I was feeling really down when he called, so I look at this as a good sign, because it really made me feel better. This may sound totally lame or corny to you, but I'd much rather being doing something, even if it's just making pizzas, or taking orders for them, then sitting around at home being broke. I need to help out my family, but I also feel better about myself when I'm working, like I'm "contributing to society " by having a job. Ok, so I'm not curing cancer, but treating people nice can really make the difference in somebody's day, and I will be working with the public, which I know I can do. It's been a long time since I've worked a cash register, but it didn't look hard, I'm planning to stay there as long as I need to to save money and go back to school to finish my child development credits, but I didn't tell the boss that. I think I conviced this new boss that I can handle it, so why am I so nervous? Any suggestions? I start my training friday.

I worked my way through college doing all sorts of jobs from mowing lawns to cutting fabric in a discount store. Your positive attitude about having a goal and treating people nicely are admirable. That is exactly what I did.....treated people fairly, honestly and with human dignity. You are nervous because you want to do well and do not want to disappoint your boss or yourself. Do your job as if it were the most important work in the world and your boss and customers will notice immediately. Be considerate of your coworkers, too. Remember, being nice and doing a good job does not mean you have to put up with rude or pushy behavior from anyone...boss, coworkers, or customers. So if a problem arises, refer it to the manager, unless it is with the manager! Then be direct, firm and honest.

You're nervouse because your human. There's alot riding on this. More than one could see on the surface. Your being able to help, your intentions to continue your education, your feelings of self-worth/esteem. All of these are very major factors in one's life and this job is a very important step to bringing those things to fruition. So, naturally, you're going to feela little angst about it. You know what? I commend you. In regards to work, I always say, " If you have to clock in, clock out an you pay taxes, it's a good job because it's an HONEST job!". There's nothing to feel ahsamed about. I wish more people had the character that you have dsipalyed by your willingness to do what it takes. Take a few deep breaths, realize that this is an important step that you can do, and go out and give'm hell. let me know when you graduate.

I think you're excited, but your nerves are disguising this because you want to prove yourself so desperately. When you get something you want, you tend to grow nervous because you don't want it to go away.

I'm sure you'll do fine. Just keep your cool and remain confident. Nothin can go wrong with lots of patience and a cool head. :)

Good luck!

Starting a new job can make anyone nervous, and maybe you your nerves are just excitment from finally getting out of the house. Be confident in yourself, I am sure you will have no problems working at a pizza restaurant. And don't stress about your boss, job turn over is high in that field. Your boss will not be surpirized if you quit 6 months from now to go back to school. Good luck, I hope you will be able to return to school!

Your heart is in the right place and you have an action plan. You don't need to lay you future out to anyone yet, especially to a job that has no future for you. Besides, bosses want to think their staff is staying forever. When it is time to move on,give them 2 weeks notice. Just show up for work, have fun make people smile!! Much of your question is actually the ansewer. Go with your gut!

Hey, its a great thing that you've got the job :) I'm a college student and I do part time chambermaiding at a hotel to get my money - at least you are on the right track. Your nerves could be down to a number of things - worrying whether the people you'll get on with will be nice, scared of making a mistake, that kind of thing. I had the same qualms about my job when I first started too, but trust me, you'll settle into it and the nerves will disappear. Hope you have fun :)
