my dog is peeing

Question Posted Thursday November 25 2004, 8:32 am

i have a 3 year old bichon frise, and he IS potty trained. when he was younger we would let him out like 10 times a day to pee. well all the sudden this year he's been peeing on the carpets like at least once a week. we're selling our house, so we got BRAND NEW CARPETS throughout the house, and he still keeps peeing on those! we even get the spray stuff to disguise the smell so he won't go back to the spot but he still does. my dad says if he pees in our new house we're giving him away! =( so how do i get him to stop? i suggested obedience school but they said no he's too old. how do we discipline him PLEASE help if you know about dogs.

Maybe he has no bladder control. Take him to the vet.You could also get a fence and just let him stay outside of your new house.

ur dog may be use to carpet so what i would suggest is to go 2 the dollar store and buy a cheap bathroom rug and start taking ur dog out bac and showing him it and in a while he should get used 2 it and then take it away and ur problem should be solved.

i would bring the dog to the vet and test him for diabetes . my dog was potty trained and all of a sudden he just started peeing inside and we had him tested and now that we got him meds for diabetes he stoped , you should also check for a urinary track infection .

no your dog is NOT too old! Take him to obedience school, thats what we did with our dog. What we do is we keep a choker collar on him (they dont actually hurt them) and keep a leash on the choker collar. Whenever he does something bad, we tug the leash and say a command, like "Get off" if he jumps up on someone or something like that. But the trick is to be persistant. Use the same punishment and command whenever he pees on the carpet. Keep repeating it every time he does something wrong and he will eventuall learn. It really works!! Hope i helped!! good luck!

Some dogs cry if they need to go to the bathroom, (that lets you know they need to go) idk if your dog does but when you think he is about to go, let him out quick. or if he sits by the door (idk if your dog does that either) but if he does that means he has to go. if that does not work you should take him to the vet and see why he is peeing so much on your carpet.

good luck!!

I would by a little cage and everytime he peed I would put him in it for a certain amount of time. Or your dog may have something wrong inside of his body. I hope all goes well.Ash>

It sounds like you might not be taking your dog out enough. My cousin has a Bichon toy poddle mix and it has to go out to the bathroom a TON. Also, they have obiedence school for older dogs- I adopted a dog who was never trained and it really helped.

If all else fails, get those plastic cover things for your carpet. They're ugly as hell, but they work. Or put those baby gate things in the doorways of rooms with carpet so he can't get in. Make sure they're low enough to step over, though- unlocking those things is a pain in the @$$.

Also someone mentioned marking...this can happen if you don't get your dog neutered right away...you might need to see your vet about that.

Hope I helped!

Sometimes when dogs get older then tend to lose control of their bladder. You need to be really attentive to your dog to make sure when it needs to go to the bathroom you get it out of the house.
Sometimes when you stuff your dogs nose in its pee the dog is confuse, the best way to discipline your dog so it understands it's bad to pee in the house is to catch it in the act. If you see your dog peeing on the carpet run to it and yell no so it knows that peeing inside the house is bad. When you take your dog outside to go to the restroom say "go pee" or something like that when your dog goes, make sure you praise it by saying good boy/girl or giving it a treat. If it pees inside the house yell at it. Hopefully your dog will then realize that it's a good thing to go outside but not inside. Lastly, if you want to restart housebreaking you can always pick a room like mabye a bathroom or something and put down newspaper. Encourage your dog to go on the newpaper so he knows the sent of the paper and he likes to go there. Slowly move the newspaper outside so when he needs to go he'll want to go outside to the newspaper. You might want to see your vet to make sure it's not a urinary tract problem or anything. Good luck, I hope your dog learns where to go to the bathroom! drop one in my inbox if you need anything else

I would first try going to the vets because there could be a medical reason why he is doing it and even if there isnt, the vet might offer some advice!!!

hmmm well if he does like to pee everywhere I would say put him in the kitchen or any area that can be closed off and easy to clean.. I have a pug myself and he isn't potty trained but we leave him in the kitchen all the time and let him run around with baby doors surrounding so that he doesn't leave. So, that would probably be the best bet.

zapreth answered Thursday November 25 2004, 11:43 am:
He is marking. This has nothing to do with house training. When a male, even nuetered, feels stressed and out of control of his environment he will try to take some control by marking territory. Also it could be his displeasure at the activity I'm sure is taking place in the house. Also if you're selling the house new people scents can trigger the behavior. All I can do is explain some of his reasons. My sister has a Male Pomeranian and so do I. The boys are litter mates and both are "fixed," but when I moved in with my sister her boy started peeing on the bathroom rugs. This stops instantly whenever my boy is staying with my parents. When both boys are at my parents my sister's dog pees on my parent's bathroom rug. So we know my boy triggers the bad behavior in her's. Something is causeing your boy stress, if you can figure out what it is and stop it great, but I think it is most likely the changes in your house. The marking may stop once he feels secure in your new home, but... This is one of the most difficult behaviors to stop. Get a few good books and see what they suggest. Hope something works!
