I have to drink coffee every day to survive. I don't drink a ton of it, probably two cups a day in the morning. My friends and I used to have a day we'd call "detox thursday" where we wouldn't drink coffee all day, but I was starting to hate detox thursdays because I felt tired and grumpy all day so I quit doing it with them. Does this mean I'm addicted? Is coffee really that bad for me? It's way better than soda, right?
When you put your grounds in the coffeemaker of a morning, put a bit of decaf in, in place of some of the regular. Increase the amount of decaf every few days, until it's all decaf.
If you buy coffee from stores, order part decaf/regular. OR, if you drink more than one, let your last cup or two be decaf, and increase the amount of decaf cups you drink until they all are. [ fyre's advice column | Ask fyre A Question ]
OneMan answered Tuesday December 9 2003, 5:52 pm: Lol I'm the WRONG one to ask THIS! Anyone who knows me will gladly tell you the incredible, almost inhuman amounts of mountain dew consumed by me on a daily basis. Hey, caffeine is caffeine and yes, it IS addictive. You feel tired and grumpy becuasde caffeine is a stimulant and your body has become accustomed to receiving it. It pretty much has to have it in order to generate the needed amount of dopamine to get you started, lol. I noticed you didnt mention headaches which also accompany caffeine withdrawal.
If I have to answer correctly, I'd say, " Yes, coffee is bad for you". But, as a partner in crime, and one that would KILL if I had to start a day without my caffeine, I say, to hell with'em all. [ OneMan's advice column | Ask OneMan A Question ]
neonfizz answered Monday October 27 2003, 7:58 pm: WEll, you could say it's bad for you. BE careful, if you're trying to break the habit, don't get hooked on juice. When i was little, Ih ad a bladder infection problem and had to have a few operations. MY dad heard that drinking a glass of cranberry juice could help so i had to drink it everymorning with breakfast. Now, I can't go a morning without it and I have to have a glass every day after school. So just slowly lessen the amount of coffeeyou drink, even if you only get rid of 50ml per week Steady gradual pace of stopping and you should be fine. metawidget answered Thursday October 23 2003, 1:56 am: Hmm... welcome to coffee addiction...
Life with coffee isn't too bad, and I drink way less soda as a coffee addict now (maybe once every couple of weeks), so it probably has a net good effect on my health. Apparently a little milk or cream in your coffee reduces its staining power if you're worried about that. Eating properly seems to reduce the coffee breath problem, so take your coffee with food.
If you want to cut down on your coffee consumption, you should go gradually rather than detoxing. You can also switch to a darker roast of coffee if it's caffeine you're worried about. Generally, the darker the roast, the less caffeine. I find darker roasts taste better, too. I know the brewing method you choose influences the caffeine level, but I don't have details on that. MissNiceness answered Wednesday October 22 2003, 12:44 am: ANYTHING that you either take in excess or that you feel you 'need' is bad for you. It signals an addiction. I have no real suggestion as to what you can do to get over it. I will say that I would think that soda is a bit more sociable...in that it doesn't stain you teeth (although it's bad for them), give you a bad breath odor, or require some funky looking cup or mug to drink the stuff out of. And you'll still get your caffeine. [ MissNiceness's advice column | Ask MissNiceness A Question ]
Invisible_Kate answered Tuesday October 21 2003, 7:47 pm: I think it is the beginning of a physical addiction, however you can get yourself out of it if you have the determination. Rather than going entitely 'detox' on thursday, try decreasing to the amount you have to 1 and 3/4 of a cup, or 1 1/2... Just gradually go down until you can go without when you need to. I'm not sure just how healthy tea is, but that could be an alternative boost in the morning. [ Invisible_Kate's advice column | Ask Invisible_Kate A Question ]
Kira_Valoka answered Tuesday October 21 2003, 5:17 pm: Soda and Coffee are about even
No, 2 cups in the morning is NOT bad, even though it is not necessarily bad. My mom has to have THREE large cups of it to wake up, and she's doing fine. Yeah, you are PROBABLY addicted, but thats like saying someone who eats Milky Ways everyday is addicted. Its not something particularly harmful. Just something you have made into a habit of doing. hiwatari answered Tuesday October 21 2003, 5:06 pm: coffee and soda are both bad for you. try to drink less coffee each day... slowly. eventually u'll be able to survive the day with only a bottle of water probably. ^-^ coffee is evil. [ hiwatari's advice column | Ask hiwatari A Question ]
nicholii answered Tuesday October 21 2003, 8:03 am: it sounds like you are addicted to caffeine (is that how you spell it? oh well, that's how I spell it lol). i would try cutting down the coffee (just have a bit in hot chocolate or something - that means smaller quantities... and it's sooo yum!). OR you could tell someone who lives with you that you want to cut down, and make them force you to do something you REALLY hate whenever you have coffee... you'll get sick of it eventually, and then just have the occasional one. don't let it control you! good luck! Timmymama answered Tuesday October 21 2003, 7:45 am: Better than soda by far, but still not good for you, especially if you are in your teens. The antioxidants in coffee help kill your skin, for a start. And 'detoxing' for a day is awful, I agree, because caffeine takes 36 hours or more to clear out of your system.
You could help yourself by:
staying off it for a week; drinking LOTS of real fruit juice (not "juice drinks") and vegetable juices; plenty of water; taking one B-vitamin supplement a day; and getting more sleep.
Results: grumpiness and exhaustion stop after a day or two; better skin and hair in a couple of weeks; more energy.
PixieTwist answered Monday October 20 2003, 9:59 pm: Coffee contains caffine, which is highly addictive. In some ways it is better then soda because it doesn't do as much damage to your teeth, and it doesn't contain as many unhealthy sugars, fats, ect. It is very likely you are addicted to caffine. Withdrawl symptoms can include headaches, sleepyness and irritablity, the last two which you exhibited. Coffee can be bad for you in ways other than its addictive nature since the acid in it can cause stomach ulcers, and when the excess acid enters the blood stream, it also increases calcium loss in urine. To top it off, it also has no nutritional value. So, to answer your questions: yes, you are addicted; yes, coffee is not very good for you; and the last question is a matter of opinion (soda contains caffine too!). Turc answered Monday October 20 2003, 9:40 pm: Der, you're addicted to caffeine. That's no better than soda. Most sodas are caffeinated. So technically, no, it's no better than soda.
Plus, it stains your teeth and gives you stinky breath! And what fun is that!
You need to wean yourself off this coffee, and you could even become like me and cut caffeine out of your diet altogether. I'm much happier without it. :) [ Turc's advice column | Ask Turc A Question ]
MFS answered Monday October 20 2003, 8:21 pm: Coffee better than soda? How? They are both fairly awful for you.
Yes, you are addicted to caffiene. Believe it or not, you'll have more energy if you drink less caffiene. Try drinking water instead. [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]
zoe. answered Monday October 20 2003, 7:31 pm: caffeine in general is not a good thing to be addicted to. i used to have to drink like 6 mountain dews a day or i'd be absolutely dead and get a migraine. you just have to gradually cut down, and your body will readjust. itll be rough, but in the end, its better for you. i'm down to one coke a day, if that, functioning fine. ScaperJess answered Monday October 20 2003, 7:24 pm: You are addicted to caffeine; your body has decided it needs it to function. Lots of people have this type of addiction, whether it is coffee or coke. Your not alone, however addictions like that are not really healthy in the long run, even an excess of caffeine is not good. It’s definitely better than drinking soda pop but its still not the best for you at least mentally and physically, should one day you not have it, expect to turn into a horribly moody wreck... Since many Americans survive with a similar if not identical addiction, I would not worry to much, just be aware that you will not function normally with out it, perhaps suffer the withdrawal to cut back a bit?
