I am 16/f and I just got my license, but now I want to learn how to ride a motorcycle. I live in VA but I'll be moving out West in a year or so, so I plan to ride full time there, but what I want to know is how do you learn to ride a motorcycle? there really isnt a Behind the Wheel class for them. Also, are they really as dangerous as people say?
Check with your local DMV for classes on riding motorcycles. They should have a list of schools in your area. Yes motorcycles are dangerous. Why? Well you don't have seat belts for one, there's nothing to keep your from leaving the seat during a wreck. This is why motorcycle riders wear the gear they do, to keep their skin intact during a slide. Wearing a helmet is very important. Although a helmet wont do much good during a high impact collision most wrecks usually occur at low speeds. Another thing to is visibility. Not yours but the traffic around you. You have to keep an eye out for traffic, people wont see you as well as other vehicles. The weather. Weather conditions play a part with friction between you and the road. A good friend of mine was killed along Interstate 30. He was going to fast, he lost control and hit a fence post with his head. He even said himself, "There's riders who've had a wreck and those that will have another."
After all that, there's some good things to riding a bike. FREEDOM. There's nothing better than feeling the wind hit your face at 55MPH! Things looks bigger, more open. The ability to park damn near anywhere. The ability to zip through rush hour traffic, but I wouldn't recommend that to an unseasoned rider. Fuel economy! You'll save a ton of dough on gas. Yeah, you may have to fill up more often but you'll do it ten times cheaper! Depending on the bike, you may get up to 50MPG or more.
I personally had a 1974 Yamaha.
---
Thanks for the rating, I wasn't trying to scare you, just beware of your surroundings. Motorcycles can be enjoyed, just like any other vehicle. You just have to be extra careful with one and pay attention more. You're more likely to be injured during a wreck without proper gear, such as leathers and helmet. I don't think you should be scared but you should know what's up. Believe me, I had the same "talk" when I got my first bike at 15.

hey there. i own a teal blue 1995 mustang. it's got white boss shinoda decals, with a 5.0 HO GT engine. stock it makes 215hp and 285 ft lbs tq. i bought it with a dynomax side exit exhaust system which supposedly brought in 5 more ft lbs tq, and 15 more horses.
my questions:
what can be done to increase the performance relatively cheap? i know 'cheap' and 'performance' don't go together, so ... help? lol
also what is camming? cams?
all in all i'm tired of everyone staring at my car, and when a ricer pulls up, its everything i can do to keep up with him.
Well, first off a car that can't breath, can't run. Upgrade the stock air filter with one from K&N. Next, consider headers along with the exhaust system on it. Also upgrade your ignition, such as what MSD offers. As budget permits you'll want to replace the stock intake and TB (throttle body). Check out Jegs.com for parts. As your budget grows with car, replace gears.
Camming, cammed or cammed out, means a car who has had it's stock cam replaced. If you change cams make sure the top and bottom half can take it.
Rip all the extra crap you don't need that weighs the car down, such as the spare tire, back seat and front passenger seat. There's tons of stuff you can do to go faster but it'll take me a year to write it all down!
I'll race ya!
Here's my 79 Caprice Coupe "heavy Chevy" AKA Mustang Killer.

I almost forgot to add, SAFETY FIRST! Can't have power without beefing up the brakes and suspension. That should be the first thing you do before adding power. Also depending on how much power, replace the seats, get a harness and roll cage.

This is continued from my question that you answered before about the light replacement.
http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=543710
It's not like cracked or anything it's completely missing.
This is the website I found the part at...
http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/details/QQMazdaQQ626QQReplacementQQCornering_LightQQ20002002QQ3161517LAS.html
The main light part is there and then this part is gone.
Do you have any idea about how much it might cost to just have them attach it?
I'll answer your question tomorrow evening, when I get home from work. Thanks for asking!
Ok, for that whole assembly and for new, yes that's a good price, I just wasn't sure what you were talking about. You could probably get that fixed, if all they to do is just bolt it on, for around 100-150. If they have to bend any sheet metal or do extra work like run the wire connections to it, it will be extra. You might get it done cheaper if you take it to a mechanic's shop instead of an auto body shop. A body shop will fix it to look like new, a guy at a mechanic's shop, since he is not a body man, will put it on to get it to work.

I'm thinking about buying a 2000 Mazda 626. It seems like a pretty decent car for the price (compared to the other cars in that price range), but it's missing the drivers side cornering light.
I searched an auto parts website and the price of the cornering light itself was $31.50.
Is that really all I need to buy to fix it? Or are there other parts inside that I have to buy as well?
Also, if I had the light already, about how much would it cost to get a shop to repair it for me? I would only have to pay for labor, right?
First of, I assume you mean the "parking" light. Is the bulb out? You are female right? Well, take a guy with you, if not you might get charged more for a simple bulb change. 31.50 for it? Is the lens busted too? That price sounds really steep. I'd shop around. Of course I may have interpreted what you said here wrong. By all means speak up if I did. Generally speaking, if you bring the part with you and ask for them to put it on then all you are going to charged is the labor. If the shop tries and charges you for parts, tell them to kiss your rear and go find someone else, but still take a male friend along or even your dad. I know it's discriminative but it's a fact, females get charged more for repairs than men.

i have this sorta tricked out 98 camaro and a stock kinda beat 75 mustang i thought i could fix up. i HAVE to sell one of them or find a new wife but i dont know which one. Which one shold i sell?
Oh man, I can't believe this is even an option for you! If you can't tell by my nic, I'm into Chevys so I may have a biased opinion on the subject and rightfully so. I've owned both Fords and Chevys and have fell in love with Chevys from an early age, ever since I owned a 73 Chevy Vega at 16. If you are a die hard car nut, it may be better to just find another wife. :D ;)
However, that may not be an option so I vote for selling the mustang. You've already said yourself you've got a semi-souped up Camaro. Why not? Have you priced parts for the stang? Yep more expensive isn't it? Actually you know what? The stang parts are probably cheaper because there's a high demand for them. BUT and I do mean a big BUTT have you cruised your town? You'll see more mustangs than camaros I'm betting. Fix the cammy up and you'll have a ride folks will be envious of.
Anyway, if you forgo my advice and decide to sell the Camaro, let me know what state you are in, the price and mods and I might be able to take it off your hands. Of course pictures would help too. By the way I live in Fort Worth Texas.

my 96 chevy tahoe just failed a smog test because the check engine light DID NOT come on. what might cause this to happen? there are no fuses labeled check engine. could it be a bulb behind the panel?
Hello. I need a bit more information. First off, I am not sure I understand your question, you failed because an "idiot" light didn't come on? That's ridiculous. I live in Texas and we have strict laws when it comes to pollution, albeit not as strict as California. What were your test results? You can ask the shop for a print out if they didn't give you one, although they should have. Let me see the results and I'll try my damnedest to figure out what could be wrong. It could be you need an new oxygen sensor, plugs or a tune up. Could even be an exhaust leak. Feel free to post a new topic on my message board, located here:

If I can't help you I'll ask my buddy who's got 25 years as a mechanic.
Also let me know what State you live in. I may need that information, once again feel free to start a new thread and I can help you out further.

Hi there,
I have a problem wherein there is a steel bolt crewed into an aluminum manifold, and both items are oxidized, meaning that the steel has rusted and the aluminum has corroded.
I have tried force, tapping the bolt with a hammer, liquid wrench, various bolt loosening products, all with no success.
Does anyone have a super-secret method of getting things like unstuck?
Thank you for your help.
Heat. Try heating the aluminum with either a heat gun or torch. Then turn on it while it is hot. The aluminum will expand faster and further. I've heard old geezers just heat the bolt, because the heat then transfers into the threads. Try soaking it in oil overnight too, unless you've done that already. Oh yeah, if you can smell gas, be careful with the torch.

I was driving to sonic and you know how they have those brick poles next to the order menu? well I was pulling into the space and the right front of my car, near the headlights, got scratched by the brick. and the scratches aren't deep but they are indented in a little bit.
What can I do to get rid of those scratches?
Pictures of the damage would really be helpful with this question but I understand. I used to work at a body shop and have worked on several cars of my own. It all really depends on the damage, such as did it go all the way though to the sheet metal or just scratch the clear coat, on how much you are willing to spend and how good you want it to look afterwards.
You may want to try some touch up paint. You can usually find it in automotive parts stores such as Autozone or Advanced Auto. If do get some pics up, let me know by sending a link and I'll help you out the best way I can. You could always take it to a body shop and get charged a ton too.

i constantly (meaning every 6 months or less) have to replace the brake pads in my '02 dodge neon. i know this can't be right/good. my brakes squeal terribly at the slightest little stop. i'm not a bad driver either, i just go slightly over the speed limit... but even so, that shouldn't affect the brakes THAT much should it? if anyone has any tips on how to make my brakes better in general, please share! i've tried to google the best brake pads for my car impaticular, but all i get is pages to buy brake pads and no reviews i find helpful.
Sounds like you got a case of warped rotors. That's what the pads compress when stopping. You can have them "turned" at Autozone for pretty cheap. Also too make sure when you are replacing the pads with a warranty on them. Usually at Autozone they'll have either a one year or a lifetime warranty on them.
Here's a sure fire way to tell you have warped rotors. The car shakes or shimmies under extreme braking or during repeated stopping such as in stop and go traffic, like stopping at every gosh darn red light.
If that's not the problem and you said it's been squealing. Have you applied some anti-squeal gel to the back of the pads before replacing them? Have you replaced the back brakes too? Sometimes drum brakes will squeal too. Although I am not sure if the 2002s came with four wheel disk brakes or disk/drums.
Here's what I'd do. I'd check the pads to make sure there's not excessive wear. If there is buy a different brand of pads and get a higher warranty.
I'd also buy some brake cleaner and thoroughly clean the calipers and surrounding parts. I'd then take the rotors off and have them turned. I'd then put the anti-squeal gel on and then while the car is still jacked up, bleed the brakes.

what is a cute affordable between $15,000 and $20,000. i kinda want an SUV type. if not i want a very cute car like honda civic or bmw. tell em your feedback on hybrids as well. what would be safe as well?
Well, buying a new car is a challenge so, I'll let you in on what I know.
First, lets talk price. Price will depend a lot on what the car offers. Most cars have a base price and then work their way up. Things get expensive when you start adding power locks, windows, seats etc...When talking about safety don't skimp on it!
I'd look into what the car has as standard equipment first. Such as, standard side curtain airbags and at least traction control. Front air bags are a must and are standard on all newer cars now.
Ok, let talk reliability. Get the longest, highest mileage power train warranty you can afford. Any perks offered besides power train (power train is the transmission and engine)in the warranty is always a plus. As much as I hate to say it, Honda has proven themselves with reliability. Chevy has too. Toyota is another good choice. I'm sorry I don't have much information on SUVs since I've never owned one.
Hybrids are usually a good way to save on gas at the pump not necessarily in mileage. For instance, lets say a hybrid gets 20 mpg and a gas only car of similar design gets 20 mpg too. Hybrids kick in an electrical motor when conditions are optimal, such as cruising at a constant speed on a level surface.
Lets say the route you take every day to work consist of equal amounts of hilly and flat level road. At the pump you only need to put in a half a gallon of fuel to get you 20 miles while the other car needs the full gallon.
As the old saying goes, "money talks and BS walks." is the truth. I promise you, you walk into a dealership with cash on hand they'll be kissing your feet and you WILL get a better bargain.
As far as cute goes, why not go for some muscle? If you can add some value to what your budget is already, wait until late 2008/2009 when Chevy is releasing the all new Camaro. I'll even let you take me for a test drive! ;)
I wanted to add that this may have not answered your question to a tee, but knowledge is power. You'll be more equipped to make an informed choice. All car manufactures have a goal to compete with each other. Personal flavor will ultimately rule your decision. There's plenty of choices in the price range you've stated. To list all cars in that range and what I deem "cute" would be an exhausting task.

Ok i wan to hook a car radio up in my bedroom so i can get amp on my subs and stuff. so how would i do that and is there a webdite i can use? or tell me specifict details.
Well, it's pretty simple if you plan on using a car battery or a 12 volt DC system (DC stands for direct current).
If you try and use house hold current, 120 volts, AC (alternating current) then it wont work.
For one the Ohms (resistance) for a car stereo is different than that of a home's stereo, usually rated at 8 ohms for a home stereo.
It can be done if you have a power converter, that changes AC to DC. Assuming you are using all the same rated Ohm speakers, if not you risk fire or damage. I don't have a website but try Google'n AC to DC power converter.
Just remember, whatever the equipment worked in the car, right down to the speakers themselves, have to be hooked up to that exact power source that came with the car for it to work properly.
Oh, don't forget the fuses either! Fuse all power leads. That way, if you make a mistake you wont ruin your equipment or cause a fire. I recommend at least 10amp fuses or lower. You can go to any auto parts store and ask for the fuses and fuse holders. If they ask what gauge wire, take a sample of what you are working with. Obviously, read the owner's manual for proper gauge wire for the amplifier and the car stereo.
The fuse holder will looking something like these, one is a BUS type and the other is a dual prong, either one will work with the correct fuse inside:
http://rigritemfg.com/products/single_dual_fuse.jpg
I only know what you are talking about because I've done this before using a 12V car battery many moons ago as a teenager.

i am interested in putting t-tops in my 78 camaro, what all is involved in doing this, flaws to doing this, or how much it will cost to have it done somewhere
Any Advice is Appreciated
Well that's an incredible amount of work to get it right for a novice. Sure, it's easy to cut a few holes but you are messing with the structural integrity of the car. If you mess up the pillar supports there's a good chance you could cause the car to twist in a hard corner, during breaking or under hard acceleration. I'd leave that work up to a professional. What it will cost? I have no clue. I am not even sure if it could be done. Your best bet is to consult a professional autobody man. I work on my own cars but I leave anything like that to the pros. In my opinion I'd stab a big block, slap a th400 in it along with some 3.73s or 4.11s and go with that. Just be certain to re-work the brakes before adding anymore power. If you need some advice on combos or making horsepower, let me know. I'll be glad to help.

Okkay, My sweet 16 is coming up and my parents promised me a new car.
I want a fast car but it cant be too expensive.
Can anyone give me any suggestions on what kind of car I should get.
By the way, im a girl & im girly.. deff.
& I want a car better then my ex boyfriends.
& He has an 04 mustang & it goes fast.
I want something I can beat him in a race in.
Please help.
I knew somewhere I was going to read, "mustang" in this question. Seems most younger kids own them. Ok, since you asked, I am going to give you my opinion.
First off, I DON'T recommend street racing at all, period! It's not only stupid but to an unexperienced driver, it can be deadly, not just for you but for innocent bystanders. If you want to race, take it to the strip!
Ok, now that we got that clear and I know you'll listen to the above warning, lets move on. Just about anything you get is capable of being "souped" up. Meaning, you can just about modify anything.
I have no clue to what your folks budget is but I'd try my damnedest to get a Camaro. No, not a V6 but an old school V8. Why I pick Camaro? Well, because it's most likely something you'll find attractive and they've been know to compete against Mustangs and win.
Not only that, when you go to buy upgrades, parts for a Chevy ARE cheaper than Ford parts. Not only that, I can just about promise you, even though I don't have clue to where you live, someone on your street knows how to work on the SBC 350 (small block Chevy 350 cubic inch motor)
I've been into the hot rod craze for awhile and have a few projects under my belt. Check my video out, it's a V8 Mustang killer, it's an old school Chevy Caprice Coupe: http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x44/jewbeans/?action=view¤t=79coupe-idel.flv

i have a 1995 mustang, with dynomax side exit exhaust. i'm looking for a little bit more rumble, so i'm looking at buying some longtube headers. it's a 5.0L GT, and the only long tubes i can find are for 1996 and on or 1993 and older.
they have to be long tubes, i wont fiddle with shorties.
another question is, is do they come in sets of two? or do i have to buy one for each set of four cylinders?
Check out Jegs.com or Summitracing.com
They are sold in sets. One for each side. I'm a Chevy guy but Hooker and Flowtech (made by Holley) I believe make long tubes for the 5.0L You can always order after market headers through Autozone too. You may have to order long tubes for a truck, just be sure they'll fit.

What's a turbo transmission, and what's it do?
also on the subject of transmissions, how hard would it be to find a lamborghini shifter. like the one on redline, where the clutch and all that is up by the steering wheel? because i've googled and googled but not found anything.
If you are referring to the turbo series GM has then I'll explain to you what I know. I've got experience with GMs (see profile) The "turbo" is just a name.
Common are the TH350 and TH400 TH means Turbo-Hydramatic These are both automatic transmissions with 3 forward gears and reverse gear. The TH350 was used for light duty and cars while the TH400 was used for trucks and heavy duty use. If you are wanting to put abuse on a transmission the TH400 handles very well. OEM, the th350 can handle 300ish + horsepower compared to the th400 of a stock 400 + Most drag racers, including myself opt for the TH400 since if built correctly can withstand 500 plus horsepower. These transmissions are called "bullet proof" not because they'll stop a bullet but because they are tried and true. As far as wanting a custom shifter, you may have to fabricate one. It would be easier to move the shifter to the floor. B&M has some great shifter conversions.
---
*Edited Feb 19th*
I also wanted to add that GM did use the th400 in cars too and used the th350 in trucks as well. Some of the older cars like the Camaro came with the th400 as well as some newer trucks with the th350. Usually the bigger the motor the bigger the transmission. Now, the th350 and th400 are interchangeable. If you are running a th350 you can run a th400 or even the overdrive version which is the 700r4. But that's another topic. LOL

can anyone tell me the gas mileage of a saturn ion in comparison to a honda civic? and does anyone have any other ideas for relatively inexpenive cars with good gas mileage like the honda civic? thanks!
That would depend on the size of the engines. Are we comparing the 2.0L to the 2.2L or the 2.2L to the 2.2L?
Are you wanting used? I've got a Chevy Cavalier, 2.2L I get about 30MPG highway and about 25MPG city. Of course the way you drive too can affect fuel economy.

I need a car, but my parents refuse to buy one for me (they can afford it, though, but they absolutely refuse).
If I were to get a car, I would have to pay for the car, the insurance, the gas... EVERYTHING.
I drive about 300 miles a week, most of it on freeways, so I need a car that has airbags, and is safe in general to drive, and has very good breaks.
I have two jobs, one of them my hours are scattered and unpredictable, the other its more predictable; I earn about 400 dollars a month, then some (it really just depends how much.. sometimes 20, sometimes 300, sometimes 0 at my other unpredictable job)
My question(s):
What type of car should I get, that doesn't eat too much gas, like what's a good model?
Any general advice on buying a used car? I know NOTHING about them.
I will be paying about 200 bucks for my car insurance a month, and gas here costs about 2.30 per gallon. Can I still afford to have a car? I mean I'll have to be making monthly payments and stuff when to pay off my car, right? Keep in mind I drive 300 miles per week.
So, in short, keeping in mind all the details, what car should I get for what price? Or if you don't know about what car, what should be my price range?
My parents aren't helping me at all in this, including estimating my price range.
Thank you so much, and I prefer adults answer this that have some experience in finance.
I'm turning 17 in March, by the way, and I'm a girl.
I think your folks are probably trying to teach you a life lesson. But look at you, you are working on getting it done! First off if you plan on buying from a used car lot you probably wont get into a car with so little income. Besides all of that car lots are looking to turn a good profit and usually jack the prices up by 100% or more. Good idea is to save up at least 1500 dollars or more (more is always better) and buy a car out right. Save up 1500, buy a car for 1000 and with the left overs get it tagged and inspected and insurance. The left over can be saved for gas or any minor repairs the car may need or a tune up. Also, 200 per month is a lot for insurance. I'd see if your parents couldn't add you to their insurance and you pay the difference. You can find car ads by going to your local craigslist.org or searching the local classifieds of your paper. Good used cars are Hondas and Chevys.

i am considering getting a 2000 bmw 328ci. i was wondering if this car is really high-maintenance? does it break down easily&stuff? what are some problem areas that occur often with these cars that i should look at? thanks!
Well, I'll be honest with you. I'm more a Chevy fan than anything else...no I'm just a Chevy fan. Overall BMW makes higher end good running cars. However, be willing to auction off your first born and sell a kidney if anything major should go wrong. Unless you can do the work yourself.
This is just some basic prices for parts I Googled for your model, not counting labor cost, add $25 per hour average for labor and not counting any additional work such as mill work or machine.
Get a warranty if you can!
Power steering pump - $300
Head gasket set, possible $300-$400+
Headlight replacement $70-$100

I just turned sixteen in November and I got my new truck. It's a 2007 Dodge 3500 Duley Lonestar SLT. I want a new speaker system in it. I don't know if what kind of truck matters, but you know now so whatever. I really like the Bose speaker systems. So do you have website where I could purchase those to fit in my truck?

Thank you!
Rockford Fosgate makes some high end great quality speakers. They are a bit pricey but sound great.
You can ask specific questions here; http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/forum
They should be able to help you, unless someone here knows your specific application.
However, once you've figured out what you need they mainly sale through local dealers or you can find a local dealer and ask them.
BTW nice truck and a dually at that!

Is it okay to put the car in park or neutral at a red light ?
LOL yeah it ok, ok as in it wont hurt your car. Well, it'll slow you down a bit when you need to go, to shift back into gear. But it wont hurt the transmission. Why? Is the car stalling? I'd put into neutral. When you shift into park, from shifting from drive to park, you pass reverse and you're backup lights will come on briefly. It could possibly frighten the driver behind you.
