All is as it should be. I will do my best to help you, as others have helped me.
advice
Freedom of speech is very important and should not be limited, assuming it doesn't offend or hurt others.
How is this relevant/acceptable to today? For example, people in countries without freedom of speech like America have to go through ridiculous things when they do try to speak up or change things. Any specific examples (American, preferably), or anything along those lines..?
I have to write an essay for a scholarship contest about that concept, but I can't think of anything especially moving/that will get me noticed..
Thanks.
Well, I can't offer you any specifics, but there are a lot of people who have been "punished" for their freedom of speech...People who maybe after they say something have their careers sabatoged...people who get put on trial for something they didn't do right before an election so that they can't run because of somehting they may have said that people didn't like. People who are in exile because of standing up for human rights. I would see if you could find some of these stories and talk about how even though there is freedom of speech there are some horrible loopholes. You can talk about how people went through these persecutions and keept speaking out until maybe many years later they were finally allowed certain rights, like the civil rights movement, and how now wether you agree with his politics or not, those same people that were persecuted have given black men the ability to become president, Hillary clinton...if women hadn't have spoken up, a woman could have never been where Hillary is and was trying to get. Saying you agree or disagree with the war in Iraq and what that means in society today, will you get beat up if you are in the wrong crowd and you don't agree with the people you are surrounded by? These are some ideas that came in my head. There is a woman in...Man, I think it's...man it's somewhere in Africa, but she is being "held" in detention (house arrest) for some BS and no one agrees with it, but they are pretty much hoding her until the election is over so that she has no chance of winning...even though the people love her. It's kind of sad :/ I mean pretty much every black leader in this country that has had any type of power has been taken out, especially when they start to preach peace and unity, casue the system is really trying to keep people devided. Also freedom of speech in the school systems and on the radio is not the same as freedom of speech let's say outside in times square NY. That's something you could touch on. I'm sure there are a lot of other types of activits too but you'd have to look them up. :) Hope this helped.
