Freedom of Speech

Question Posted Friday October 2 2009, 3:18 pm

Freedom of speech is very important and should not be limited, assuming it doesn't offend or hurt others.

How is this relevant/acceptable to today? For example, people in countries without freedom of speech like America have to go through ridiculous things when they do try to speak up or change things. Any specific examples (American, preferably), or anything along those lines..?

I have to write an essay for a scholarship contest about that concept, but I can't think of anything especially moving/that will get me noticed..

Thanks.

yes.....china must be destroyed.
here's something thats moving- Freedom of thought is as important as freedom of speech. for without the freedom to think as an individual, one cannot participate fully in any discussion. the freedom to open one's mind to any subject, any line of thought, thats what brings true knowledge. If a person is restrained by social norms (ie: not able to fully discuss the subject of racism because they're white), then a solution to the problem may never be found. Freedom of speech, and the press, is nothing if one does not posess the ability to use it to its full potential.

NOTE: I'm drunk as hell right now. I hope this made sense.

IF You want to write something that will be noticed but is a bit of an obvious choice write about china and how most of its people are literally silenced by fear of what there governement will do to them diffenently mention the Australian iron tycoon that was imprisoned in china for allegedly stealling state secretes and was not allowed to any of his basic rights. and the man who stood in front of legion of chinese tanks ( he was on the cover 'time' magazine)it was allegedly said that china tried everything they could to prevent its release. There is a fine line between freedom of speech and terrorism and tyranny

Well, I can't offer you any specifics, but there are a lot of people who have been "punished" for their freedom of speech...People who maybe after they say something have their careers sabatoged...people who get put on trial for something they didn't do right before an election so that they can't run because of somehting they may have said that people didn't like. People who are in exile because of standing up for human rights. I would see if you could find some of these stories and talk about how even though there is freedom of speech there are some horrible loopholes. You can talk about how people went through these persecutions and keept speaking out until maybe many years later they were finally allowed certain rights, like the civil rights movement, and how now wether you agree with his politics or not, those same people that were persecuted have given black men the ability to become president, Hillary clinton...if women hadn't have spoken up, a woman could have never been where Hillary is and was trying to get. Saying you agree or disagree with the war in Iraq and what that means in society today, will you get beat up if you are in the wrong crowd and you don't agree with the people you are surrounded by? These are some ideas that came in my head. There is a woman in...Man, I think it's...man it's somewhere in Africa, but she is being "held" in detention (house arrest) for some BS and no one agrees with it, but they are pretty much hoding her until the election is over so that she has no chance of winning...even though the people love her. It's kind of sad :/ I mean pretty much every black leader in this country that has had any type of power has been taken out, especially when they start to preach peace and unity, casue the system is really trying to keep people devided. Also freedom of speech in the school systems and on the radio is not the same as freedom of speech let's say outside in times square NY. That's something you could touch on. I'm sure there are a lot of other types of activits too but you'd have to look them up. :) Hope this helped.

I don't have much to say other than you are kind of mixed up, here.

I have the right to say whatever I want, outside of shouting "FIRE" in a crowded theater. That act of stupidity gets people hurt, perhaps even trampled to death. I do NOT have the right to cause such panic.

You say that freedom of speech is important, and you are very right, because it is extremely important. But you contradict yourself by saying "...[Freedom of speech]should not be limited, assuming it doesn't offend or hurt others."

You say it shouldn't be limited, yet you are willing to put limits on it at the same time? When prepared to limit and/or strip the rights of others, you must be prepared to limit and/or strip your own rights as well.

It matters not if what I say hurts someones feelings or offends them, because everything hurts/offends somebody. Does that mean my right is the freedom to shut the hell up?
I think not.

Did I offend you?
Did I offend the person who gave you this idea that freedom of speech is important as long as what's being said is what others agree with? So sorry, but that's not the way it works.
See, I have the right to say what I want.
You have the right to not like what I say.

I hope I taught you something important. Then I can say I at least made some sort of difference today.
