Q: I am 5'6 and about 105 lbs. I feel fat almost all the time. I'm so self conscious. Whenever someone tells me i'm thin, i still don't think so myself. For the past six years, i've gone through periods of not eating much of anything; starving myself. But then after a little while i'll go through a period of eating and feeling guilty and planning on not eating anymore. I've been in an out of those periods for six years. I also don't get a regular period, when i should. I skip months at a time. I'm not really sure what this means.

My parents are doctors and have medical books around the house. These books are a more trusted source than whatever Google and Yahoo want to throw at you in the search engine. This is what I found on the 17th Edition Textbook of Pediatrics:
"The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) criteria for the diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) include
(1)intense fear of becoming obese, which does not diminish as weight loss progresses;
(2)disturbance in the way in which one's body weight, size, or shape is experienced (e.g., claiming to "feel fat" even when one is emaciated or believing that one area of the body is "too fat" even when obviously underweight);
(3)refusal to maintain body weight over a minimal normal weight for age and height (e.g., weight loss leading to maintenance of body weight 15% below expected, failure to make expected weight gain during period of growth leading to body weight 15% less than that expected); and
(4) in females, absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles when otherwise expected to occur (primary or secondary amenorrhea).
"AN is characterized further by excessive physical activity in the face of apparent inanition; denial of hunger; preoccupation with food preparation, frequently accompanied by bizarre eating behaviors; and often studiousness and academic success...Patients who have AN are subdivided into the "restrictor" and "BN" subgroups, according to their method of caloric reduction. Restrictors severely limit their intake of carbohydrate and fat-containing foods, whereas bulimics tend to eat in binges and then to purge themselves of food by self-induced vomiting or the use of cathartics."
At 5'6 and 105 lbs, your Body Mass Index (BMI) is at 16.9. So right now you are underweight, since:

I really like giving advice, so thats why I have a column here. I've been inactive for a long time, but I'm back and will do my best to catch up. Advicenators is a great site and it is what we make it. Having my own advice column helped me learn a lot of new things, even about myself, while giving me the chance to help others along the way. Thanks.
