i really would like to hear from people. anorexia?.

Question Posted Tuesday March 13 2007, 9:28 pm

I am 5'6 and about 105 lbs. I feel fat almost all the time. I'm so self conscious. Whenever someone tells me i'm thin, i still don't think so myself. For the past six years, i've gone through periods of not eating much of anything; starving myself. But then after a little while i'll go through a period of eating and feeling guilty and planning on not eating anymore. I've been in an out of those periods for six years. I also don't get a regular period, when i should. I skip months at a time. I'm not really sure what this means.

My parents are doctors and have medical books around the house. These books are a more trusted source than whatever Google and Yahoo want to throw at you in the search engine. This is what I found on the 17th Edition Textbook of Pediatrics:

"The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) criteria for the diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) include

(1)intense fear of becoming obese, which does not diminish as weight loss progresses;

(2)disturbance in the way in which one's body weight, size, or shape is experienced (e.g., claiming to "feel fat" even when one is emaciated or believing that one area of the body is "too fat" even when obviously underweight);

(3)refusal to maintain body weight over a minimal normal weight for age and height (e.g., weight loss leading to maintenance of body weight 15% below expected, failure to make expected weight gain during period of growth leading to body weight 15% less than that expected); and

(4) in females, absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles when otherwise expected to occur (primary or secondary amenorrhea).

"AN is characterized further by excessive physical activity in the face of apparent inanition; denial of hunger; preoccupation with food preparation, frequently accompanied by bizarre eating behaviors; and often studiousness and academic success...Patients who have AN are subdivided into the "restrictor" and "BN" subgroups, according to their method of caloric reduction. Restrictors severely limit their intake of carbohydrate and fat-containing foods, whereas bulimics tend to eat in binges and then to purge themselves of food by self-induced vomiting or the use of cathartics."

At 5'6 and 105 lbs, your Body Mass Index (BMI) is at 16.9. So right now you are underweight, since:
# Underweight = <18.5
# Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
# Overweight = 25-29.9

Evidence and medical research strongly suggests that you have anorexia nervosa; I'm not your doctor to diagnose that though. You don't need a friend to tell you otherwise, just look at the BMI indications or even the diagnosis for AN.

I would suggest, and this is just so you can see for yourself, to take some string, yarn, or floss, and measure out how thick (by making a circle out of it) you think your thigh and other parts of the body are, without checking first. Cut it off and put that piece aside. Now take the string and actually measure yourself and cut it off. Put the two pieces alongside each other, and I can almost guarantee that you will notice just how far you were from your predictions. This will help you to see the difference between what you imagine and what really is.

Anyways, the reason why I'm typing all of this up and doing the best I can to help you is because right now I'm on the other side of the fence. I don't have AN, but I'm dealing with somebody who might very well have it, and it's a sensitive situation. If you still don't believe the medical books, the BMI indication, or the string test, then please, I urge you to seek medical help. There are plenty of people who are willing to help you and know how to deal with this situation.

I've heard of too many stories where a girl is hospitalized and force-fed through a tube, just so she can stay alive. That does not need to happen to you. I'll tell you right now that it is really difficult to help this situation on your own, and that getting help from anyone, be it medical professionals or your family or friends can help. If you have any more questions or need any kind of help, feel free to get a hold of me anytime. Hope that helped and good luck.

That does sound like disordered eating behavior, most likely anorexia. Here's the wikipedia link:

You didn't really give us information about your age or what makes you go through periods of starving yourself. You didn't say how all of this got started. I think you do likely have anorexia, though. You should ask for help. (Yes, an irregular or absent period is to be expected given your body fat level and it's commonly associated with anorexia).
