after restarting my computer i opened firefox but all my bookmarks and tabs are gone. they aren't in my recycle bin.. is there anyway to restore them?

Open any file explorer window ("my computer", for example) and go to tools, folder options. In the "view" tab, select "show hidden files and folders" and press ok. Now navigate to C:\documents and settings\your user name\application data\mozilla\firefox\profiles. There is a folder here that starts with random characters and ends with default. It looks like abcd1234.default. Open this folder. In that folder is another folder called "bookmarkbackups", go in there. The folders are named by date; if the most recent one ends it ".html" rename it "bookmarks.html", if it doesn't end in ".html", rename it "bookmarks". Now cut that file and paste it into the folder you were just in, the one with the random characters. You will overwrite the old one. If everything worked, your bookmarks will return the next time you restart firefox. You can't restore your tabs, and if there isn't anything in bookmarkbackups then you can't restore your bookmarks; sorry.

In the future, use something like mozy, google browser sync, or FEBE to backup your stuff:
https://mozy.com/registration/free?code=ZM42QG
http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/browsersync/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2109

how do you change the settings to your computer so that when you re-type in what you typed it wont be visable in the pull down box?

i hope you can understand what i'm talking about lol thanks!

In Internet Explorer 7, go to tools, internet options, content(tab), and "settings" under "autocomplete". You can disable it there.

In Internet Explorer 6, I think it's somewhere in "internet options", but I don't know exactly where.

In firefox, go to tools, options, privacy, and uncheck "remember what I enter in forms and the search box".

Is there any way to move everything in multiple different files to one place..
I mean like if you have a file with files in it, and things in the files, is there any way to move all the things in the big file to one place, deleting the sub-files.

And I mean in like one go, instead of going into each file, moving the stuff, and then deleting the files

Thanks.

Go to edit, select all. Right click any folder there and "cut". "Paste" it to where you want it.

With all files selected, you can CTRL+click any file to unselect it. Even when you don't use "select all", CTRL+click can be used to select more than one file.

Select one file. Now SHIFT+click a file a few spaces on. All files between them are selected.

Click and hold an empty space. Move the mouse and "lasso" all wanted files.

In the command prompt(start, run, cmd), the commands "move" "copy" and "xcopy" will be useful.

i know limewire is illegal and everything. ive heard about people getting fined for LOTS of money for using it. if i right click all my songs and click stop sharing or whatever it says, can i still get fined? is there anything i can read online about this?
thanks!

Yes, but it's much less likely. The copyright holders typically target people who are:
-Sharing
-Sharing lots
-Sharing on purpose
-Using KaZaA
-Using a bad ISP: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs

Not sharing is called leeching, and it's strongly discouraged by the filesharing community. You're taking without giving back. Therefore, if you are using a good ISP(not on the linked list), you should continue sharing.

there isnt any "no log off" key, closest key was "startmenulogoff" i set that to zero( it was at 1) but i still dont have a log off button. also i have more than one account but when i turn on my comp it goes from starting up to loading personal settings, i don't get to pick which account i want to use.

No, setting startmenulogoff to 1 *removes* the log off button; it makes your problem worse. Change that back to 0 and, in that same location, create the key "NoLogoff", and set it to 0. Maybe that'll fix it. If not, contact me again.

Use tweakUI to change the autologon thing:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
or you can delete the defaultuser and defaultpassword keys in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

how do you put one on top then one on bottom of the top?
everyone says you can't do it on paint, but if you can, how?

how do you put one pic of you smiling on top, and one under it, and your waving, with a border around it.

can you do this on paint
if not, where & is it free?
thanks alott!

This HTML should do it:

In paint you would painstakingly position the images and then use the "rec table" tool to make a border. There isn't an automatic way to do it.

ok i have no log off button and i've tried pressing ctrl-alt-delete and then tried logging off like that but it still doesn't work. (i have no log off button on the start thing or on the task manager). i also have another problem, when i turn on my comp i don't have a welcome screen, so i cant pick which account i want to log on to, it picks the admin one by itself.

-i have tried right clicking on start, then properties, then customize, then advanced, to see if i can enable the log off button but there is nothing about that there.

please someone help me i know its being disabled but dont know how to fix it

thank you

If you only have the Administrator account, then it's normal for it to log onto it automatically. If you have more than one, use tweakUI to change it(in the "logon" category):
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

To enable log off, go to start, run. Type:

regedit

On the left, navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. "Explorer" needs to be selected. Doubleclick the "NoLogOff" key and set its value to "0". If that key is already at 0, contact me by email or IM.

I just bought a thing of memorex blank cds and everytime I go to burn a cd onto them its like it burns half of them or 3 of them then stops. My computer pops up saying windows cannot record this info..... is it the cds or my computer?

It's your burning software. Use infrarecorder instead:
http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/
Use the "Copy the contents of a CD directly to another CD" option.

is it possible to acquire food poisoning by eating two foods together? are any foods eaten together deadly?

Certain exotic foods have medicine-like chemicals in them that will react badly with other exotic foods with medicine-like chemicals. You will not find these foods anywhere near you, don't worry aobut it.

I was wondering if there was someway to tell if a person is sleeping...like if there was a way to maybe count their breaths they take per minute or something? I've been looking it up on google but no such luck.
thanks!

There isn't a fool-proof method. They usually breath slower, and are less likely to respond to outside stimulus.

I am trying to create a link to my myspace blog on my profile.
Instead of using words like "click here" I want to be able to use a picture as the link. Can anyone help me with the html??

Thanks so much

You just put the anchor tag around the image tag. Example (spacing for clarity, not necessity):

The border="0" just removes the annoying image border that would come with it normally. You can remove that if you want.

well you know how if someone you know/you're having suicidal thoughts you should tell someone or call that hotline or whatever? well is it really that necessary? i myself on occasion have suicidal thoughts/feelings and if somebody did that to me i would honestly feel betrayed and i think it would be completely unnecessary. i'm not a doctor, so i guess i would not know for sure. but if i'm having or sometimes have thoughts about suicide is it really that big of a deal that needs immediate attention? like i don't think about it all the time only occasionally..

Not just thoughts. It's when you're seriously thinking about doing it. When you get to the point of thinking about who you'll leave your stuff to, it's gone too far and you need to talk to someone.

I need a good, fast, free, and reliable Youtube (flv) video to mp3 converter. I prefer using Youtube compared to Limewire, and other p2p networks. I am able to download, but I want something safe. Keep in mind that I am downloading this to my dad's computer, and I can NOT mess his computer up, or he'll kill me.

I know that you are quite the computer expert, so thats why I asked you.

Use zamzar, no downloads at all:

So I just got my laptop in March and it came with Windows Vista Basic. I have an Acer (don't know specific name) with a intel pentium dual processo. Anyways.. I have the normal programs on my laptop.. plus I downloaded Microsoft Office and Limewire. I don't even have 100 songs downloaded. I've tried freeing up as much space as possible and it's no where near full. My computer takes about 10 minutes to load then like 3 or 4 minutes to get the internet working. Why is my computer running so slow??? I've also changed my color scheme to Windows Basic.

Follow my guide:
http://www.advicenators.com/talkaboutmetopic.php?t=223&userboard_id=38985
It's written for XP, but will work for Vista.

If there is a delay in internet access, read my answer here:

hi. we have wireless broadband internet because we were sorting out our laptop, but unfortunately, it didnt get fixed. well if people have wireless they know that you need a PC to connect the router to, then you can add any wireless devices. the wireless router is connected to the phone pin, which is also used by our phone. whenever we use the phone, the internet stops working, like dial-up. the page that comes up is the one that tells you to refresh. how can i stop this from happening?!

You need to put a DSL filter in all of the phone connections you are using. So you need to put one on your router connection and one on every phone in your house. The setup is like this:

wall
|
filter (NEW)
|
router
|
computer

wall
|
filter (NEW)
|
phone

You can find a DSL filter at any hardware store like the Home Depot or Lowe's. You probably won't find them at electronics stores like Best Buy. You can also find them online:
http://tinyurl.com/2zksbq

When you installed your wireless router, you probably misplaced the DSL filter your ISP gave you when they installed the service. If you find it you can use that one.

what is better, a windows pc or a mac? the design of the mac's are awesome, but people say you cant have some things on there. e.g. if you were to buy something that needs computer instalation, you wouldnt be able to do it on a mac sometimes?

Programs that are made for windows will not work on a Mac. Sometimes the creator of a program will make a special version that will work on a Mac, but that takes a lot of work. You won't be able to use most games, paint, IE, and almost every other program you have, including ones you paid for. Most open-source applications like Azureus, the GIMP, and pidgin will be very difficult to install, and you'll probably have to compile them from source.

Pros for Mac OS X:
-It "just works"
-It includes most necessary programs already
-It looks pretty
-You will be able to compile linux/unix/bsd programs from source with few modifications
-Very few viruses are written for OS X; you will not need an antivirus or firewall

Cons for OS X:
-It doesn't give you enough diagnostic information; if it stops "just working" you will have a harder time fixing it
-Settings aren't as exposed as in windows; it's more difficult to change the way it "just works"
-!!Hardly any programs will work on OS X!!
-Linux/unix/bsd programs that work on OS X will be aimed at experts
-Programs that do work on OS X will be released later, sometimes years later, than their Windows counterparts
-Most guides are written for windows
-Most assume you have windows
-Windows experience is more valuable than OS X experience
-After you buy a Mac you become part of their annoying "community" that can't shut up about how great their Mac is

Pros for Windows:
-You can use most programs
-With cygwin some linux/unix/bsd programs can be used
-Windows is very customizable; it can be made to look pretty. It can be made to look exactly like a Mac
-It's easier to fix your problems; there is more diagnostic information, guides, and experts

Cons for Windows:
-The core of Windows is less efficient than OS X. If you were compare the speed of a game on Windows and OS X side-by-side with equal system resources, OS X would be faster.
-It comes with very few programs pre-installed, and all of them suck
-There are tons of viruses for windows, you NEED an antivirus
-Windows wants to tell you diagnostic information when it fails, this is confusing for newbies(though great for advanced users)
-It's easier to do serious harm to your system accidentally
-All customizations of the user interface are advanced

You want a Mac if:
-You are a newbie and don't care about programs
-You are going to dual-boot Mac and Windows, or you have two computers
-You are an expert interested in OS X

You want Windows if:
-You are an intermediate+ user
-You are an extreme newbie who doesn't know what an OS is
-You rely on Windows programs
-You do anything business-related on your computer

my laptop hasnt been working for a couple months, and i finally got it fixed and got it back today. when i turned it on, it wasnt online, so i connected it to my wireless network. now its stuck on "acquiring network address" with the little yellow dot moving back and forth in front of the computer icon on my tool bar. i have another laptop thats running on the same wireless network, thats online right now. how do i get the other laptop online? its a dell laptop with windows xp. im not sure of the wireless router i have though. its trying to connect to the wireless network connecton, and the local area connection says a network cable is unplugged, but i know nothing is unplugged. ive tried connecting it to the local area connection, but it didnt work. im pretty computer savy with things like this, but for some reason, i cant figure this one out.
thanks!

Please go to start, run and type:

cmd

At the command prompt, type:

ipconfig /all >%systemdrive%\ipconfig.txt

and press enter. In your main drive, probably C:, is now a file called ipconfig.txt. That file contains important diagnostic information. Copy the contents of that to this question's "additional information", and a question to me:
http://www.advicenators.com/questioninfo.php?q=518635
http://www.advicenators.com/question.php?u=38985
Make sure you do both, if you do just "additional info", I won't be able to tell you when I've answered your question. If you just ask me, you won't give other columnists the chance to read the necessary information.

Hi please can someone help me ok well i want to view everything that i have viewed on the internet all the websites and stuff i know the History thing (Ctrl+H) i always delete them after i viewed the computer whats happened is i want to view absolutely everything from when i brought this computer and how do you delete it afterwards thanks a lot love you all and please keep sending in your advice even if i have 50 answers thanks!!!

As long as you've not used a clean-up application, it's possible to read the contents of index.dat files to see every site you've ever been to. Download and install this:
http://tinyurl.com/3uuer
Click the first button in the toolbar and click "find" in the middle. Wait for it to finish scanning. On the list, click the one with the largest size(first column after location). You want to actually click the row, not the checkbox. Click the third button in the tool bar, and it will give you every site you've ever visited.

If that doesn't work, you can use system restore like LagunaBabe says. I don't recommend it though, since system restore seriously messes with your computer. It can delete important data and make programs not function any more, or function wrongly.

If you've ever used a cleanup application like ccleaner (but not "disk cleanup" that is included with windows), it won't be possible to recover history from before your use of it.
