I've been away for a while due to a serious illness and subsequent health issues. Favourite quotes of the moment:
The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!
Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.
We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!
As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.
May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.
I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.
I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!
I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.
I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!
I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.
If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.
I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.
advice
I failed my second driving test today, on both occasions, especially today it was down to pure nerves. When I'm with my instructor on a normal driving lesson, or in my own car with a parent I drive perfectly, but as soon as I'm put in with a strange examiner with the sheet of paper on their lap (no matter how nice they are!) my driving goes out the window.
My instructor has advised me to buy some sort of relaxant, to help calm me down before my test - any advice on types, or anything else... I live in the UK so anything that is purchasable here would be great too.
Thanks :)
I have sympathy for you, nerves on a driving test are a terrible thing to deal with, especially with our roads!
Would it be possible for a friends parent, (one you don't know too well) to sit in the car with you and hold a similar board? It may help you get used to it.
Failing that, Kalms are supposed to work, but be careful of the dosage. Health food shops may be able to recommend a few herbal calmers.
Depending on your funds you could also try hypnotherapy, or a CD on stress by Paul McKenna might help, put it on to play whilst you're asleep for a couple of weeks and see what happens.
If all else fails, have faith in yourself. You know you can do it, you've proved it many times with a parent or an instructor in the car. Try to practise all the routes as often as you can so that you limit the chances of any nasty surprises.
Good luck.
My grandmother has a friend who's father just passed away. In January, his mother passed away. Their family is Korean and their religion is Buddhist. My grandmother is Italian and Catholic. She wanted to know what the proper etiquette is for responding to this. She wants to know what a non buddhist person should do/get and a buddhist person who just lost his second parent. In the past they have done a LOT for my grandparents such as getting them many extravegant gifts and my grandmother just wanted to know what would be an appropriate thing to give them would be. When my great-grandmother passed away they gave my grandmother money. I'm not sure why I'm telling you that, maybe it'll help. If any of you are buddhist, what's the appropriate thing to do?
Buddists believe in reincarnation, and one thing that is very important to them is for funeral guests to view the body, and bow slightly toward it. The body is usually in an open casket. This is in recognition, and a reminder, of the impermanance of life.
It is also generally considered polite to not visit the house before the ceremony but visitors are encouraged after.
Gifts can take the form of the sending of flowers or a donation to a charity of their choosing, made in the name of the deceased.
My dog died something like 1 hour ago. It was very unexpected, and my whole family was crying. I on the other hand, felt no need to cry or anything, although I was close to him as well. Am I a walking time bomb, or is this just my grieving style? Thanks.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss.
There is no right or wrong way to deal with death, it's a very personal thing. Everyone handles it differently. You could go on for days, weeks or months with no reaction, then something small could be enough to set off the grieving process.
You may find that you can't release your feelings whilst your family are crying, it's too much of an emotional overload.
You may even be one of those philosophical people that are able to just accept death as a part of life, and don't cry.
Whatever the reason, don't worry about it, just try to be there for your family now and support them, and in time, should you need it, they will able to do the same for you.
are crackers bad for guinea pigs? like one, regular
cracker. he ate it very willingly & seemed to really like
it cause when he finished it, he squeeked really loudly
[ like when they are calling for food ] but i didn't give
him anymore cause i was afraid it was bad for him.
thanks in advv. :]
It depends what sort of cracker it was. If it was a salty or sugary one, you shouldn't really give him another. If it was just a plain one, it should be ok if it's not a regular thing. Animals, like us, tend to prefer the things that are not so good for them.
So keep it to an occasional treat if it's very plain. However, he is still better off with the specialist guinea pig treats.
Im looking for a game that has a penguin on a tobbogan and you make a track could anyone tell me the website, thanks!
I found this one, not sure if it's the one you're after though. It's called Pingu.

Okay so I am NOT pregnant, this I know for sure because I took a blood test at my doctor a few weeks ago because I am going to South Africa soon.
I haven't gotten my period for 3 months! I am not anorexic or bulimic, I have not lost tons of weight resently, however, I am overweight. What really freaked me out is that I saw a hair on my chin!!!! I know it's normal for females to get facial hair but I never noticed this before.
Can I be going through menapause? Why haven't I gotten my period? Is this normal?? Have any of you ever skipped periods for this long??? AH I'm really freaking out here.
It is possible to go through the menopause at a young age, just not very common. It affects about 1% of women between the ages of 15-45.
Having said that, don't panic, there's a good chance it's something as simple as a hormone imbalance, which can be dealt with. There are specific blood tests to find this. I would suggest you go back to your doctor, explain what has been happening and let him diagnose you.
Even if it is nothing to worry about, it will ease the tension you must feeling, which could even help to kick start your period.
I get really bored online. I need something to do, to keep me entertained.
What are some online fun things I can do?
Sites? Games?
I already do myspace. lol.
Thanks!

Okay well i have bronchitus (sp?) and my doctor prescribed me with an albuterol inhaler. But it makes me cough soooooo much, and it hurts so bad because of my sore throat. Does anyone have any advice?
Thank you :).
As it's a powder filled capsule, have you been shown the correct way to inhale it? If not, this could be causing your coughing and sore throat. Having the bronchitis can also make this feel worse.
If you're not already doing this, when you have to take the inhaler, sit up straight, keep your neck held high, chin slightly up and take a short, sharp breath in with the powder, then hold your breath for at least ten seconds, a bit longer if you can. Then exhale slowly. The faster you can inhale, the less likely the powder is going to stick to your throat.
Not everyone can get on with a powder inhaler, so if you are still having problems, speak to your doctor about trying a different one. There are lots to choose from.
I hope you feel better soon, bronchitis is a nasty thing to suffer from.
are fairies real? i have a obsession about them, i mean they r all over my room. and i just wanted to see if they are real.
There is supposed to be a whole realm of magical beings. No one has been able to either prove or disprove their existence.
I would say go with how you feel. If they feel real to you I don't see any harm in it.
I know she did not say that I should gain weight. However, I keep thinking I have a few other pants that are big (I brought them that way - it was the style) and if I wear them and she sees them on me she will say the same thing. However, I have worn one of the pants that are big and she hasnt said anything. Am I overreacting to the above?
STORY TO REFRESH YOUR MEMORY: I am thin and A FEW DAYS AGO when I came home from work I changed into a tee-shirt but wore the same pants I wore to work. She asked me as I sat down to eat if I lost weight, and I said no, but this upset me. I said to her that she always tells me I look beautiful. She said you do look beautiful but your pants look bigger. And she told me that I am skinny enough. However, I feel as if she is telling me to gain weight and I look ugly -- is this in my mind and am I overreacting. HELP" WHEN I ASKED MY FRIENDS THEY SAID THAT IF MY MOM WANTED ME TO GAIN WEIGHT SHE WOULD KEEP PESTERING ME TO EAT OR SAY YOU ARE NOT EATING ENOUGH AND SHE NEVER DOES THAT TO ME - SHE ALWAYS ASKS ME IS THAT THE RIGHT AMOUNT" (PLEASE KEEP IN MIND AFTER A FEW DAYS NOW SHE DOES NOT WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT)
If you think about it it's not surprising she does not want to talk about it anymore. You reacted badly to something she said in all innocence and she is probably a. worried you would over react again, and b. she is tired of the same old story.
You KNOW you are thin, you have said this many, many times. You have had countless stories about how thin you are and how you are if you feel you have been slighted in anything.
The next time you start wondering about this, take a look in the nearest mirror, that should help to reassure you. You could also try to keep a record of how many times you seek reassurance from others. This might help you to understand your mothers attitude to not wanting to discuss it any further.
Look at the copy and paste notes you have
already compiled, as this should also help you.
I think it safe to assume that you are over reacting, and you need to take positive steps to overcome this before you drive your family and friends away.
Lastly, as I have said before, if someone says you are beautiful, accept it gladly. It is not a thing that many people have said to them, treasure those compliments and discard the rest.
I used to have quite a few freckles on my face but now I have like none. If you never go outside do they go away? If I go outside in the sun more will they come back? I like freckles. :)
If you used to have freckles, chances are that when you stay out in the sun for a decent length of time, they will return for a while. This happens to me every year. During the winter you would not know I have any. Just don't forget the sun cream! :)
Lately, I have been extremely thirsty. I do not know what is wrong with me! I weight a normal weight. I thought it might be early signs of diabetes - but i wasn't sure. I know that none of you can diagnose me, but any opinions?
thanks!
and by the way, my sister and dad both have diabetes - the one where they need to have sugar at certain points of the day or something!
If you are concerned, have a family history of diabetes and/or have other symptoms, you need to see a doctor for a test. In some areas you can have a finger prick test at a pharmacy.
This isn't something you should delay on. If you do have it, you can start on a suitable diet and treatment sooner. If you don't have it, it will stop you worrying about it.
Good luck.
My boyfriend just got a car. It's a manual. He knows how to drive it fine, but he can't shift into first gear fast enough and that causes him to roll backwards if he happens to be stopped on a hill. He's worried that since people always stop basically right on his ass, he's going to roll backwards into them. Any tips on how to not roll backwards in a situation like that? I mean I know if he did roll back and hit someone it would be the other person's fault for stopping so close, but it would be nice to avoid the problem altogether. Please and thanks!
If he needs to do a hill start, he should apply the hand brake as soon as he stops. This should stop any roll back problems. When he is ready to start moving, he needs to ensure the car is in first gear, use the clutch to get the 'bite', where the car noise changes and it wants to start moving. Then gently release the hand brake and slowly move forward. If he has sufficient revs the car will move in the right direction.
He will be unable to shift into first gear unless he is going very slowly or stopped as this gear is for starting and stopping mostly. It is very difficult to use first at any other speed.
If he is having that many problems with the manoeuvre, maybe he should practise on a deserted hill somewhere? You are correct in that it would be the fault of the car behind for being too close, but practising would mean it wouldn't be an issue.
Do the moderators make other moderators. or does the computer do it. What I'm asking is do/can other moderators make people into moderators?

It sounds as though your mother thinks you look fine but is scared of your reactions to her saying anything to you about your weight, clothes, jewellery, food portions etc.
Your friends have all said you look fine to them, and you really must start accepting this. The next time you feel someone has said something offensive to you, try looking in a mirror. If you are happy with what you see, take that reassurance. It really does not matter what anyone thinks about you as long as you can be happy.
I'm sure you do not want to make your family and friends scared to talk to you in case you react badly to them, so you must start to have more confidence in yourself. They say you look beautiful, accept it! Not many people get that said to them, so treasure the compliments and let any perceived criticisms go. Life is too short to worry about them. :)
AHH i have never been sooo pissed off in my life.
ok so the thing is that im about to turn 16 in june and i have a younger sister who is 14 right now. ANd she said that our parents are gonna let her do Drivers ED this summer. AND They wont let me.
AND im GONNA be 16. SO not only they will let her Do it before me BUT she is YOUNGER too. HOW EFFIn unfair is that. I just like wanna KILL myself now. IM soo pissed off.
what can i do to stop this from happeing.
cuz there is NO way that she is gonna take drivers ed before me. THERE is no way.
how can i make my parents make her take it when shes also 16.
Was it just her that told you that or did your parents say it as well? It's important because if they've not said anything, she could be trying to get a reaction out of you with no basis in the truth.
If they have also said this to you, you need to talk calmly to them and find out the reasons. It may be something that you are not aware of.
Collect all the facts and then base any discussions around them. Always stay calm and if there is a problem for them, try to work towards a compromise. If you can show them you can act maturely it should go some way to them agreeing to letting you take it.
i want that ringtone that adults cant hear but teens can. how can i get it?
If you go to google and type in 'ringtones adults cannot hear' it gives you a huge number of sites to choose from.

Okay, so on my right side of my body. I have had a serious pain there off and on for the past month or so. It's a sharp pain, that gets worse when I stretch, or am overly active. I am suppose to be going to the doctor, so do not say go to a doctor. I would like info, on if anyone has any idea what it could be. or how to help. if you need more info please message me.
I doubt that it's anything serious. One of my daughters has been suffering the same way for some time and the doctor has said it looks like muscular pain in the rib area.
It's good that you are going to the doctor as they are the only ones that can tell you for sure. However, please do not worry if you are sent for tests. My daughter has had lots of these and this is the conclusion they have come to. Your doctor may do the same just to be on the safe side. This does not mean they think it is serious.
Tell them how concerned you are and they should be able to calm some of your fears. At your age, it is highly unlikely to be cancer, but nothing can be a definite.
From what you have described, it does sound muscular and it can very painful.
Good luck.
