I was really pleased when I read that you answer computer questions since that is precisely what my problem has to deal with. For Christmas, I receieved an iPOD Nano.
I'm guessing you are familiar with the product but just in case, I'll give you a quick overview.
In order to transfer music from iTunes onto the device, it needs to be installed via USB port. However, when I plug it into my USB port, it is not recognized by my computer. Nothing happens. I've had the same result with my digital camera and my printer. At one point in time, the USB port worked but now, it's not recognizing any device. I was wondering why this was and most importantly, what I can do to fix it. Please give as much information as you can because I'm eager to feed my iPOD.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I have been extremely busy with the site lately.
Here are the steps I would take:
Check with other devices. (Done)
Look at the port(s) to see if the contacts are shorted together.
Unplug all USB devices, and try only one.
I would look in the motherboard BIOS to see that the USB controller is enabled.
You didn't mention the type of computer, so I will select PC with windows.
I would look in the device manager, to see if there are any warnings on the USB hardware.
If not, remove the USB root hub from the device list. Then reboot your computer.
It should re-detect and re-install the driver.
If this does not fix it, the USB controller may be damaged.
These days, there are usually two(or more) USB hubs built into motherboards. One to run the front access ports, and one to run the back ports.
If you haven't already, try the back port, or the front, whichever you haven't.
If you still have no success, I would acquire an aftermarket USB controller.
There is a high probability that a static discharge has blown the controller you have now.
This is a card that goes inside your computer and adds new USB ports.
Those are very inexpensive.
I suggest you get it from www.Newegg.com, or www.Geeks.com.

hey i was just wondering if you could help me figure out how to disable my old video card when i get a new one. some people told me i have to do it by getting into the "bios" but i dont know what that is or how to do it. by the way i cant just take out my old card cause its like built into the motherboard... thats what people told me. thanks! Hello there,
Well, if your motherboard is recent, it may disable it automatically when you install the new card.
If not, you should reference your motherboard manual for the BIOS instructions.
If you do not have the manual, but can find the motherboard model number, you can do a search for the manufacturer's website. There, you should be able to find instructions.
If all of this fails, you can take a look and see if you can find it yourself.

It is dangerous to mess around in the BIOS if you have no idea what you are doing.
!!!BE ADVISED!!!
When you reboot your machine, you should see something like:
"Press DEL to enter setup."
It could be escape, F1, F2, F10, etc.
Press that key right when that message appears, and you should see the configuration screen for your computer.
Now the fun part:
There will be several menu choices. You will have to look at each one and look for something like:
On-board Video: Enabled
... Then you can disable it.
Look at the instructions on the screen for how you can save the changes and reboot. (Usually F10)
Here is the deal: Don't change ANYTHING else, and you should be fine.
If you need anything else, you should give me the motherboard model number.

It's just naimee, Thanks so much for giving Mary & I another chance. I've been ignoring all personal messages on my advice column, like I'm super proud of myself.
Anyways, there's this one kid; BlueEyesBigBoy.
His name is Andy, and I'm pretty sure you know him already because he's been banned like 3 times before for repeating answers on a question. But, he sends me like 10 inbox messages an hour! It's so annoying, I blocked his e-mail address on my e-mail because he sent me literally a million e-mails a day. I don't know his AIM s/n I don't think he has one, so I can't really tell him to stop sending me inboxes. Like it's really dumb because he'll pretend he's somebody else, and he'll leave me stupid messages asking me stuff about saxophones & band, when I know it's him & that's for sure! He'll also ask me if you're in charge and stuff, and he'll just ask stupid questions about you. I only answered one because I didn't think it'd be him, but then the inboxes just kept coming and coming and coming. I was wondering if you could like do something? I'm not sure what you could do, because I'm not asking you to permanently ban him off of the site, if you don't want to. But it's SO annoying, it's driving me CRAZYYYYYY! When you ban his account on BlueEyesBigBoy he gets on xx_coolest_xx. Plus he'll just ask me questions on my column without logging in, you know what I mean?
I'm just asking, you don't have to do anything if you don't want to, but I thought maybe you could help. :)
Ohh, and if it matters which I think it does, he's 12 years old. Proof.

Heyy I had trouble before with my sims 2 game but then i figured out i needed to download the driveer for my video card. my video card is called a SiS 650_651_M650_740. ok so the driver for it is a zip file but I do not know what to do with the zip file. Can any computer savvy people help me? :) (link)

Hello There,
This will get you started:
If you are using windows XP, you simple right click and "extract" the contents.
You can also double click the file and try to run whichever file is inside.
If you are using windows 98/ME then you will want to download winzip.
Winzip is the first search result for that search up there, and there is a tutorial for zip files in windows XP a few steps further down.
I am not sure if that SIS chip will even run Sims2. Just as a note.

Once upon a time, not all video cards displayed graphics. THere were video cards which were text only, and graphics cards that did both.

But, in the same sense I found it very unfair and still do that you didn't even tell Mary nor I that we need to delete the things out of our profiles & leaving the information in our answers, & you just banned us until Sunday. I can easily say that I spend so much time on Advicenators & so does Mary. I'm pretty sure if you would've atleast told us that we were doing wrong by putting that crap on our answers/profiles, we would've deleted them right away. But you didn't. I am willing to reason with you, I'm not trying to make you let me do whatever I want. This is your site, you do everything for it, like banning & such -- why would I even try and enforce something like a club or whatever whenever I know that you already hate me, and you disagree with everything I do? I really appreciated our four hour conversation in the chat, and don't say that it was like a waste of time, and you never got through to me. I understood everything you were saying, and I still do. Yes, I have heard of inside jokes. Inside jokes are best kept 'inside' the circle of people who know them. To do otherwise is considered rude and inconsiderate.
Yes, I am saying you can never write a compliment as a question, to anyone. If they have their e-mail listed, or their AIM, ICQ, Skype, whatever... Use them. If they don't, then respect their privacy and leave them alone.
I don't want you to SAY you have learned your lesson... I want you to actually LEARN the lesson. :-(
As for your Uncle, my guess is that when you say "...he always had to be right..." what you are saying is that he didn't let you walk all over him. Good for him.

As for how you are kicking yourself off the site:
You now, officially, have been told not to do certain things for the last time. If you choose to do them again, you will be choosing to leave this site.
As for not knowing your account existed, that is a good thing.
There are a lot of people here who just use the site for their own purposes and don't really care about the site as a whole...
They are tolerated, but add nothing good to the site, only noise.
When they attract the attention of the other mods, and I have other mods DEMANDING that I do something about them, then I make myself aware of them. Usually that results in a warning, and then the removal of their account(s.)
AS for people sending messages all the time, yes they do, over 1,000 warnings have been issued and 178 accounts have been permanently closed.
Don't think for one minute I am kidding, or that I will not follow through.
You say it is obvious we will not get along... That is your choice. I get along with people who respect the site, and the people who use it, enough to follow the existing guidelines.

Amy has 8 accounts that I know of, and a really terrible track record with the constant chat thing.
She makes this new account today, and immediately sends several "This is my new account" messages.
This isn't a chat board. I am beginning to think both of you speak english but listen in some other language, since nothing I say seems to get through to you.
Until you started hanging around with her, I didn't even know your account existed. I don't want anyone to leave, but you have really left me no choice.
Either grow up and stop acting like 10 year olds, follow the rules of the site, have ONE column only, and send ZERO, as in NO, as is NOT EVEN ONE, EVER personal message in the form of a question, or you need to go.
I don't mind if someone has no other way to contact someone, and only uses it for that once or twice... But all that useless crap is filling up the database and making the site slow.
