about

I am 48 years old (yes that's old compared to some of you).

I have worked in nursing and/or healthcare management positions for 24 years. Primarily OB, Neonatal, Mental Health, Occupational Health and Geriatrics. In Jan 2008 I started my own business to board horses and do equine/human education. I am also a certified dog trainer.

I've been around the block so to speak and seem to be always helping others. I've been told that the reason people seek me out for advice is that I am approachable and caring. But on the same token even though I consider the person's feelings. I tell it like I see it. I've dealt with people in trouble with the law, dysfunctional families such as those with abuse & marriage problems. Not to mention problems with employees and employers.

I don't ever claim to know it all, and always keep an open mind.

hi in my tank i had 4 female and 1 male silver mollie, now due to mass breeding i have to many to count. i dont use a breeding dock or catch the fry i just let them do there thing, but the tank is looking a little silver now. would it be possible to cross breed a bright red sordtail with the mollies to add a little variaty to the tank.
many thanks

Swordtails and Mollies do not interbreed. Platys and Mollies have been known to interbreed, but the offspring may be sterile and will usually look like platys. My suggestion is to get some colorful guppies and breed them for a variation or add a different breed of tropical fish that is compatible, even those of the non livebearer type.

i had an MRI done & it turns out i have a chronic ankle sprain. i looked it up on google but it did not give me much information. i don't meet with my doctor until november. has anyone ever had this?? what did you do about it?? i've had it since june & it hurts a lot. i can't go out for more than an hour or two without it being tired. it feels like its hanging on by a string & is really weak. i've started therapy, but it didn't help too much. that's when i went & got the MRI done. anyone have any ideas??

thanks!!

A chronic condition means it's long term, the ankle has never healed the way it should. Therapy as prescribed by your doctor is probably the best treatment for you right now, but it's most likely going to take a lot of therapy or a long time in therapy. After all, this has been going on a long time. If you are not satsified with your recovery or the treatment you are receiving, it would be reasonable to seek a second opinion perhaps by an orthopedic or a podiatrist. It would depend on what the Dr says but wearing an ankle brace or a strap on support might help, but it also might keep the ankle weak. There's been good reports of healing with magnets, (The special kind that are made for that purpose) The Dr may not agree with it, but at least it wouldn't hurt to try it. If anything wear the magnet on your ankle at night.

on saturday, i started feeling really sick and today i went to the doctor and i have strep throat. but it's hurts like crazy. my throat is bothering me SO much. my tonsels are inflamed and when i move my head, my tonsels hurt. my neck is also in a lot of pain. whenever i lie down or anything my neck hurts SO much. and i have fever that just DOESNT go away. today the doctor gave me antibiotics and it's my first day on them. (not ever but since i've had strep). thing is, i don't think i remember ever having strep. so i have a few questions:

1) how long is the thorat thing gonna last? cuz usually when i get sick, my throat hurts for about 3 or 4 days and then it stops. so if you have had it before, please let me know because i don't know if it's different
2) how long before the anti-biotics start kicking in
3) is the pain that i have in my neck normal?
4) whenever i cough, sneeze, blow my nose, my head is is so much pain! sometimes i have to hold it when i do any of these things because of how much it hurts. and sometimes it starts throbbing. is this normal?
5) when i sneeze or blow my nose, i noe it sounds gross but it comes out with blood. is this part of it? or something else? because i haven't been blowing my nose so hard and so often that this should be happening

please let me know as soon as possible. i would just feel so much more relieved if i just knew when i was gonna feel better.

thank you so much!

I have had all of these symptoms with strep throat except the nose bleed. However your nose and throat are connected so I imagine the nose bleed might be caused by inflammation. To be safe call the Dr and ask. If you are taking oral antibiotics, they should take 48-72 hours to give you some relief. In 4-5 days you should be feeling much better. Ask your pharmacist or dr before using any over the counter medication. Antibiotic ointment applied in the nostrils with a q-tip may help keep the membranes moist so they don't bleed. Tylenol or ibuprofen can help with the neck pain. If the pain is in your spine--and travels up the back of your head, or your fever does not improve after 24 hours, see the Dr.

I'm 23 years old and have a bassett hound. I'm also going to school to be a veterinary technologist. I've owned a Rottweiler and a huskie mix in the past.

I'm not exactly new to dogs, and I have ways to care for them (dog training, socializing, and vet care) at my fingertips with schooling and working at a vet clinic.

But, I was wondering if I could get your opinion on certain dog breeds. Like I said, I had a rottweiler in the past. Most people looked at him like he was one of the most evil things they'd ever seen, even though he was such a big baby that he would never hurt a fly. My 3 year old neice at the time could boss him around, and even though he was four times as big as her, he would listen.

So, I don't believe in "bad breeds" but, I'm not sure if it's entirely how they are brought up, or whether there is a tiny bit of truth to the myths of evil dog breeds.

I want to get a pit bull when I'm done with school and have plenty of time. I was wondering what you thought of them. Do you think they're more likely to become aggressive than a chihuahua (we see a lot of mean chihuahua's, and small dogs in general at the clinic)

There is a technician where I work who once put a muzzel on a pit bull as soon as he was brought back because, in her words "it's the breed, it's the breed"

I want to get a pit bull to prove those people wrong, but wanted to know if you thought I should re-think that.

Hi, I also have a Basset Hound, Golden Retriever and a Terrier/Chihuahua mix. As part of my dog obedience education we have learned about this sort of thing so I am flattered that you asked. I believe the technician was in the wrong to make such an assumption based only on the breed. In fact, one day she may run into trouble simply because she projects her attitude onto a particular dog. We have to remember when thinking about behavior, it's dog first and breed second. So in essence all dogs have similar instincts, but some instincts stand out more in certain breeds because they were developed that way through breeding and training.

So in reality you are correct in believing there are no bad breeds. It's just that Pit bulls were bred to fight and most humans expect that they will, so they become what they think they will be. Some people are intimidated by Pit Bulls and other various physically strong breeds. Dogs know when a human mind is weak and fearful. Because they are so physically strong they need a human to be their pack leader and when they attack they may be capable of causing more damage as compared to a weaker breed.

A poorly bred dog that has emotional issues brought on by the humans that care for them, is a dangerous combination no matter what the breed is.
Some poor behaviors are genetic due to poor breeding, and some are enviromental. This can happen to any dog, of any breed.

Little dogs have more issues for two reasons. They aren't capable of doing as much damage as a big dog so the negative behavior is not corrected and typically they are spoiled because of their size. Someone is much more likely to get bit by a small dog.

I volunteer at the Humane society and on one day I walked 12 pit bulls. None of them showed agression. But when I went to get the Basset Hound out of the kennel...he would have liked to attack me. If you think of that breed as always docile, that's wrong in some cases.

My daughter was attacked and nearly killed at age 7 by a Neighbor's black lab. I bet your tech wouldn't have been afraid of a black lab?

It's wrong to project a certain image a particlar breed, they need to look at the "dog" first and "breed" second just like I said before.

I just got my braces off and got a retainer yesterday i forgot the case and put it in my bag with my gym clothes so i didnt think anything would happen to it.(but i was wrong.) So i go 2 put it in at night and the front wire is all croked. So i was able to bend it back so it looks normal now its just a little tight. I'm just afaid it going to bend my teeth in way i don't want it to cuz i might have bent it back wrong. Should i tell my mom (even though she'll get really mad) and go 2 the ortho asap or just wear it @ nite and tell him next app. in likke 4 weeks??? thanks for the help!!! i need it!!

Go back to the orthodontist and have him adjust the retainer. Yes...you might actually ruin your teeth if it is too tight in the wrong place. Don't wait for 4 weeks.

ok my butt crack itches really bad... like for 2 days its been going on.. its happened before but only for like 2 or 3 days so im hopin its the same.. is it bad? like it itches reaaaaaaaaaly bad.. is that bad? is there anything i can do to stop it?

Just wanted to update you on the information that another poster gave you. I doubt if it is tapeworms. Tapeworms are not transmitted by hand to mouth contact..to get a tapeworm you actually have to swallow a host which is usually a flea. Pinworms may be what everyone is trying to say here. They exit the rectum at night to lay their eggs. Often little white dots are seen in the stool--or actually tiny worms. The itching would be worse at night. I do believe there is over the counter medicine for pinworms if you think that may be what you have. Call the Dr or ask a pharmacist. Otherwise what may be going on is some type of skin yeast infection. In this case you'd want to keep the area as clean and dry as possible and apply a nystatin type powder. The best advise of all however is to see your Dr so you can get diagnosed and get some relief from the pure torture that itching can cause.

i'm a 15 year old female. i recently broke my fibula and tibia at a soccer tournament. i had surgery last week, where they installed a rod in my leg. i'm supposed to be putting as much pressure on it as possible, to start the healing process, but it hurts too much. so i've just been staying off of it. my homecoming is in two weeks, and my goal is to be able to go without crutches. but i can't seem to convince myself that it's okay to walk on it. please, if you have any advice on stretches i could do - or just some encouragement to get me motivated would be nice. thank you :]

Since you are feeling unsure about bearing weight, what I would suggest is asking your Dr for a referal to physical therapy (PT). The therapist will be able to design a regimen that is specifically for your type of injury and surgery. I am sure you'd rather not reinjure your leg considering all you've been through, and this might be what is causing your apprehension. That's completely normal, I understand. As far as motivation, PT is very good at this...and with each little bit of progress you make you will feel much better and be willing to do more.

how do you reduce/eliminate the apperance of scars and/or stretch marks? any kinds of lotions or something?

New scars can be treated with a flat type of dressing that is gel like. This will flatten the scar and make it less noticable. Follow the package directions.

To fade stretch marks one could try a topical vitamin A or retinol type cream. There are stonger versions of this available by prescription. Otherwise laser treatment may help too.

We're having a party soon and I need some recipe ideas. Here's what we've already decided to do:
Deviled eggs(made to look like eyes), a meat loaf (made to look like corpse with "bloody"(ketchup) knife going through it), stuffed "jalapenos from hell" (stuffed with a cream cheese, garlic, pimento mixture dyed red), a mexican dip with halloween shaped tortilla chips, a pumpkin shaped and colored cheeseball and crackers, and a bread snake (like a baguette, painted striped with food coloring). Things that could go with these things would be great. We're not little kids, we're in our 20's, so gory but not hoky is good. Oh, but I HATE the cat box idea. Other stuff please! Thank you for helping me out!!!

Hey, You have some great ideas! Sounds like a fun party. Since you don't have a dessert listed, perhaps a graveyard cake would be nice. It's just a regular chocolate cake, glazed with a light coat of chocolate frosting. Build some tombstones by cutting vienna finger cookies in half, you can write RIP on the flat part of the cookie with a frosting pen, embed them into the cake to stand up. Make little dirt piles in front of the stones with crushed oreo cookies. You can also use bare twigs to build haunted looking trees. You can find decorations at the craft store such as ghosts, bats and spiders to add to the cake. Sounds like you are creative so maybe you can come up with other graveyard decorating ideas too.

I have a 6 month old part rotwiller part lab and she wont stop crying at night or even when we go to work my neighbours are not happy what should i do? also should i keep her in the crate while we are gone to work????

The pup is too old for the "heartbeat" or "hotwater bottle" treatment. This only works for very young puppies that are newly separated from their Mother. Yes, you should keep her in the crate while you are at work. Place the crate in a bedroom or other room where you can close the door. Don't allow her to see you when you are leaving--or see your preparations for leaving, like getting your coat or keys etc. Don't say goodbye. I know this is hard, but she will assoicate these things with leaving and it will make her anxiety worse. Make sure she has gone outside to potty before putting her in the crate...feed her about an hour before, so she can eliminate outside first. That way her bladder and bowels will be empty, and her tummy full and she will be more comfortable. Take the pup out of the crate when she is calm. Don't take her out when she is crying...she will associate the crying with getting out. Don't go to her in the middle of the night when she is whining...instead set your alarm and take her out once during the night to go potty. The more we baby our dogs, the more unstable they become.

In my hermit crabs dirt at the bottom of their cage, this white stuff that looks like a spider web keeps showing up. We take it out and replace the dirt and wash the cage, but it comes back. What could it be and how could we get rid of it for good? Could it be hurting my hermit crabs?

I am guessing that your hermit crab has mites. Similar to spider mites. From what I have read you will have to "sterilze" the environment and everything in it.

see this link for more info on mites:

i want to take pictures with my nikon camera and develope the pictures in a black room. where can i get the stuff to do it and about how much all together would it be?

I recently sold all my dark room supplies on ebay for over 300.00, you might be able to find some used equipment somewhere around that price. However, this didn't include all the chemicals and paper. To set up a dark room these days with new equipment--and it will depend on if you are going to do black & white or color I am guessing you will need to spend $700.00 to $1000.00. Some camera shops will sell this equipment, also I imagine there are places online to purchase what you need. In my opinion, it's interesting, but also a big hassle. Digital photography is much more fun!

Has anybody here ever had a yeast infection? I'm afraid that I might... I'm 17 and I haven't ever experienced one. I have a very small, round bump on my vulva (imagine what a really round pimple feels like). It feels a little sore but I think that's because it started out as a little cut. Might it just be an infected cut? I don't want to do anything without being sure... and I absolutely am terrified of hospitals and I'm not too interested in telling parentals anyway. So... advice? Thoughts?

The symptoms you are describing are not those of a yeast infection. If you have been sexually active, you need to see a Dr. for diagnosis and treatment. The best advice is to tell your parents you haven't been feeling well and want to see the Dr. At 17 you don't have to go into detail, just tell them it's personal.

My husband has woke up the last two nights wet from urination. He is embarrassed and worried. I am having trouble finding anything helpful. What could be causing something like this to happen?

Prostate problems and or a urinary tract infection can cause night time incontinence. In addition it can also be caused by alcohol, antidepressants and some blood pressure medications. It's likely that his problem can be corrected so an appointment with his Dr would be best. Once you get a diagnosis, then you will have something to go on. Until then none of the information that you read on the internet will matter because it might not apply to his condition.

I don't know why, but small noises (such as people smacking their lips when they eat, or someone breathing heavily) make me really annoyed. I can't talk to anyone if they are doing something like that, because I can't concentrate. Can someone tell me what's going on??

14/f

I am sound sensitive too. Over the years I have learned to ignore people noises, but there are some things that I just can't block out. A physiciatrist has a book on cd out about people like us. She calls us "intuitive empaths" meaning we tune in to the small things about people and can feel the positive or negative energy they project. It's all very interesting. At least after listening to her CD I know why I am over sensitive to sound, lights, and smells. Beleive it or not, a lot of people are this same way. Just try to project a peaceful image in your mind while confronted with people that do these annoying things..and see if that helps.

i am 16 years old and i hear voics and see things. i get really scared and when the voices talk to me they tell me to kill myself or hurt myself. and if i dont do what they tell me to they threaten to hurt me. it really scares me. my mom tries to tell me thats the voices arent real but they feel soo real to me and i freak out when i start hearing them. when they talk to me i dont remember where i am or who i am around at the time. i have been hospitalized and placed in special ed. at skool. but no one can help me because when i hear them all i can think to do is do what they are telling me to. and when i snap out of it i am always laying on the floor disoriented and there is always 2 people standing close to me. how should i cope with this? what could i do to make the voices stop? HELP ME PLEASE I AM IN DESPERATE NEED OF ADVICE!

Hello,

Hallucinations feel very real to a person who has them, for those that don't have hallucinations they simply can't understand. The best plan of action for someone in your situation is to seek the advice of your psychiatrist. Perhaps onging group therapy with others having the same symptoms could be of some help to you, but that should be up to your Dr. There are many new medications available, and possibly there is one that may work to control your symptoms. Under the direction of your Dr. He/She should be able to try different medications or find the best combination specifically for you. Any new treatment plan or regimen would certainly be worth it if you had some relief from your turmoil.
I have heard that some people can learn to distinguish real or hallucitory voices, and that alone has made them stop. Only someone who has had that experience would be able to tell you how it's done. As far as medicine is concerned there is always hope that there will be a cure for your condition someday. I don't question the fact that miracles have been performed by alternative healers and spiritual (charismatic) healers, because I have seen it first hand. Of course, if your Mom would agree, that may be an option for you in addition to psychiatric treatment. Remember this "You are important and you deserve to feel better"

I am so scared. I share lipgloss sodas utensils and cups with my friends. One of them has a cold sore, or some kind of fever blister that just went away. my mom and my other friend thought they were getting one, and my friend has oral herpes, and she found this out recently. Ive shared the above with them, and recently ive realized my mouth is hurting and is very chapped. when i put some regular lipglosses on it hurts, so i use blistex, or sally hansen chapped lip repair. ive always had rashes but their coming up again. im not very surprised about that but im still freaked out their coming back now. do i have mono or herpes or some oral problem?

Cold sores "Herpes" may look like a mild localized rash in some people. Even though the sores are not present, people can still be contagious as the virus sheds from the skin cells. Chapped lips are different, you most likely would not have a rash or any raised areas--just red peeling skin. As far as mono, or other oral problems, probably not. You should see your Dr for a test to see if you have been exposed to the herpes virus, and he/she may order something to shorten the duration or to prevent outbreaks if the test is positive.

For the past hour my right arm (between my wrist and elbow) has been twitching in various places.

If I watch my arm I can see it move, tensing and releasing. I have NO idea why.

What could of caused it? Is it serious? Should I see a doctor? Will it go away?

Please tell me anything you know
Thanks so much :)

Since this problem did not resolve immediatly, yes you should see a Dr. It may be minor, but it could also be a symptom of a more serious neurological disorder, especially since you cannot relate a specific injury. If it's minor, then you just bought peace of mind with the Dr's visit. If it's serious, at least you can treat it early.

I got a bloody nose last night... it lasted for about 20 minutes... so I need to know how to make it stop fast.

Lean forward, pinch the nostrils together with your fingers and a cold wet washcloth and apply a cold pack directly to the nose. Leaning back only makes it appear as if the bleeding has stopped because the blood will run down your throat. It's tempting, but don't blow your nose for several hours afterwards because that will dislodge the clot and start the bleeding all over again. If the blood loss seems severe during "20 minutes" you should probably see the Dr who can either pack the nostril or cauterize the blood vessel and stop the bleeding immediatly. If this occurs frequently the Dr can also advise prevention strategies.

i jammed my toe. its kind of crewkid now just a little and it hurts and its swollen. i am scared to pop it cuz it hurts so bad. so if i dont will it eventually go back to normal?

Don't try to pop or manipulate the toe back into place yourself. This might just make it worse. The best thing to do is to see a Dr to rule out a fracture or dislocation. Use a cold pack and elevate your foot as often as possible and try not to bear weight on that part of your foot until it is healed. If the crooked appearance is from swelling alone, it will go back to normal after the swelling goes down. If it is a problem with the bone/joint or tendon it will not change without the proper treatment.
