i'm a 15 year old female. i recently broke my fibula and tibia at a soccer tournament. i had surgery last week, where they installed a rod in my leg. i'm supposed to be putting as much pressure on it as possible, to start the healing process, but it hurts too much. so i've just been staying off of it. my homecoming is in two weeks, and my goal is to be able to go without crutches. but i can't seem to convince myself that it's okay to walk on it. please, if you have any advice on stretches i could do - or just some encouragement to get me motivated would be nice. thank you :]

The therapist will be able to design a regimen that is specifically for your type of injury and surgery. I am sure you'd rather not reinjure your leg considering all you've been through, and this might be what is causing your apprehension. That's completely normal, I understand. As far as motivation, PT is very good at this...and with each little bit of progress you make you will feel much better and be willing to do more. [ Nallie's advice column | Ask Nallie A Question ]

Actually, I'm quite suprised about this. I don't know who told you to do apply as much pressure as possible on it. If it was the doctors who said this, I'd be even more suprised.
*Please don't do that* You need to apply pressure gradually. You shouldn't force so much pressure at one. I understand that you want to be recovered by homecoming but it's not worth it. Honest.
That metal rod is going to become part of your body. You're going to need let it heal at it's own pace. It does take time to get used to so don't push it. Maybe it will be okay by homecoming. And I'm not saying to not try to apply pressue just start out gradually and work your way up. Okay?
HoNeStMiStAkE16 answered Tuesday October 3 2006, 6:55 pm: Same exact thing happened to me except i needed a cast and no surgery....THE DAY BEFORE PROM!!!!! i couldn't go..yea it sucked really bad..my boyfriend however was nice enough to stay home with me..i would be thankful you could go to the homecoming =P anyway..i would start going to physical therapy.. THAT HELPS alot..if your already doing that..you NEED to start walking on it trust me i know how it feels it feels like your legs about to break off. but if the doctors orders are very important. if you dont do what he says..then its going to take a long time. I mean..if he gives you permission to walk...hun trust me you can walk. and it will heal alot quicker to..for stretches..you could do those ruber band things where you work out your quads. You just really need to start walkin though thats going to help you the most..dude i know it hurts like a mother and its kinda scary..but the only way its gonna get better is if you try you know. I hope i helped hun! goodluck have fun at your homecoming im sure youll go without your crutches =P [ HoNeStMiStAkE16's advice column | Ask HoNeStMiStAkE16 A Question ]
