The best thing to do is to see a Dr to rule out a fracture or dislocation. Use a cold pack and elevate your foot as often as possible and try not to bear weight on that part of your foot until it is healed. If the crooked appearance is from swelling alone, it will go back to normal after the swelling goes down. If it is a problem with the bone/joint or tendon it will not change without the proper treatment. [ Nallie's advice column | Ask Nallie A Question ]

for the big toe, you must see a doctor. if it's broken and not reset it can cause you pain for life. this is basically true for all of the toes, but the big toe cannot be simply taped to another toe to heal. it needs a splint because it is a major bone.
perhaps you should have the school nurse or an EMT look at it and tell you if you will need to go to the doctor or not. [ Moop's advice column | Ask Moop A Question ]

If it hurts so bad that you are afraid to manipulate it at all, or if the pain lasts for multiple days, go see a doctor. Normally the worst thing you can do is dislocate a toe, and when the swelling goes down you should be fine (other than maybe some permanent change of shape and the like). But if the pain is still pretty bad after say 1 day, it probably isn't just a jammed toe, you might have broken it.
Even then it might or might not be a big deal. My "Index" toe on my left foot was dislocated bad enough so that it lay backwards along the top of my foot about 5-6 years ago. I was told it was simply swollen and after several months, there was enough calcification along the joints that now my toe is solid and will not bend. Doesnt hurt, and its simply odd...but if this possibilty bothers you, you might want to go see a doctor. And if the pain persists, also, go see a doctor.
I really cannot tell you if it will go back to normal on its own. If after several days it hasnt improved...well, I would say no, it wont improve on its own. [ Erronius's advice column | Ask Erronius A Question ]
Elcee answered Monday September 25 2006, 5:31 am: It would probably be better if you took yourself off to the doctors. They will be able to assess the damage and advise on treatment. It sounds to me like it is dislocated and you would find it quite painful to put it back. I am not sure if it would go back on its own and I am not medically qualified to say it would. Getting professional help is probably the best way forward. Good luck. [ Elcee's advice column | Ask Elcee A Question ]
