Hermit crabs.

Question Posted Friday October 6 2006, 9:48 pm

In my hermit crabs dirt at the bottom of their cage, this white stuff that looks like a spider web keeps showing up. We take it out and replace the dirt and wash the cage, but it comes back. What could it be and how could we get rid of it for good? Could it be hurting my hermit crabs?

I am guessing that your hermit crab has mites. Similar to spider mites. From what I have read you will have to "sterilze" the environment and everything in it.

see this link for more info on mites:
