LoveNJstyle answered Wednesday August 15 2007, 1:36 pm: My parents did this also until halfway through my sophomore year of highschool because my brother turned 13. [by that time i was 16]. I know it's reallllyyy annoying but just learn to deal with it. I got into other things... i stopped watching tv & got on my computer all the time. watch TNN or lifetime.. they have a lot of stuff on there to watch. if you want info on popular shows on those channels, go on the websites so you know whats going on. MTV repeats shows alllll the time so really, you're not missing much. there are other things on tv and online, i promise. hang in there! <3 [ LoveNJstyle's advice column | Ask LoveNJstyle A Question ]
phatdopelove answered Wednesday August 15 2007, 12:17 pm: When I was litte, I was not allowed to watch MTV. Even some the celebs that are in hollywood today said their parents wouldn't let them watch MTV as a kid because they simply thought that some of the behavior on MTV was crude and inappropiate for their kids to watch.
So just take a minute look at it from your parents perspective. On MTV or VH1 there is cussing, nudity, sexual content (that is blocked out for tv) but your parents are probably afraid that you'll pick up any of that behavior, so they block that. Most parents who do this block anything that has cussing even though it is bleated out, you can still read lips.
My parents put a block on any of the shows or movies on tv that have a rating MA or Rated R.
But I ask, and they unblocked it. So try reasoning with them and tell them you won't pick any of that behavior from the t.v.
Your parents will lose their trust in you if they figure you do pick of that behavior such as (cussing ) they would then blame themselves and the t.v. for letting you watch that. They DON'T want to blame themselves for your bad behavior. (Even though I'm sure you haven't had any) So thats the reason why the block it out.
Take it maturely when you talk to him, DON'T yell or show that you'r angry, if you do, you're just letting your parents know how immature you are, and they won't take you seriously. So try reasoning with them, see if that helps, hope I helped, and sorry so long! [ phatdopelove's advice column | Ask phatdopelove A Question ]

my parents refuse to even pay for all of the 'garbage' that's on cable tv. when you turn on our tv, there's a blue screen on which to watch movies.
not that i don't know what's on,
but MTV is silly, anyway.
and VH1 can be amusing, but really, it is just a time waster.
if they are resilliant in not letting you view these channels, give it a few weeks, and once you're just used to not watching it, see if you really do miss it that much.
i doubt you will.
(we also have a filter on our computer that not only gives my parents a report on every website visited, but blocks everything from pornography, to online poker, to words typed in search engines that COULD lead to pornographic websites. not to mention all of the health and helpful school sites that it blocks by default. pogo.com was blocked becasue of 'gambling.' i was really furious at first, but you just deal with it.)
Razhie answered Wednesday August 15 2007, 2:43 am: Doesn't really matter if it's unreasonable or not. They pay the cable bill right? It's their call.
The best you can hope to do is discuss this with them calmly.
Oh, and of course, you can watch pretty much anything online these days...
I wasn't allowed to watch television (except for the odd Disney movie, the Muppet Show and Star Trek episodes) until I was thirteen, and even then my parents were very restrictive about the TV. I turned out just fine without it, and frankly, all those Simpson's jokes I was missing out on, turned out not to really be all the funny. [ Razhie's advice column | Ask Razhie A Question ]

Jeanne answered Wednesday August 15 2007, 12:40 am: yep! my parents were exactly the same way. and i was pretty certain that i was the only person in the universe who hadn't seen certain shows and movies. and it made me feel like a complete idiot when everyone was talking about stuff and i had no idea what they were talking about. but somehow i survived. and once i was old enough to do what i wanted, i made up for lost time and watched all the things i was forbidden to watch when i was younger. and with a lot of those things, i realized that i really hadn't missed much! haha! but yeah, it was pretty annoying at the time. but don't worry... you're definitely not the only one. LM answered Wednesday August 15 2007, 12:32 am: Parental controls are sometimes there by default. They may not even know they're activated. Ask them [calmly] if they can allow you to watch those channels now. VH1 & MTV aren't the greatest channels, but they won't like, destroy your future. They're OK shows to watch sometimes & by 14 there's really no reason that you can't.
