My dog is 4 years old and housebroken. Lately (six months and counting) he pees in the house. He usually picks something that is laying on the floor, shoes, bookbags, clothes. He is crated when we are not home and is on a leash when he is outside. What can we do to stop this?
Get him checked with the vet first to make sure there is no medical basis for the problem.
If he's clear of that, think back to when this started. Was there anything that he could have seen as being traumatic at that time? It could be something you would have taken no notice of but was enough to upset his little world, either inside or outside of the house.
If there are still no pointers to the reason, he may just need some retraining. Ensure he is taken out after every time he eats or drinks, so that his 'tank' is empty. Either make or buy a rattle can. This is a tin with a secure lid, that you put marbles or small pebbles inside, anything that makes a sharp noise. follow him around the house, when he looks as if he is about to cock his leg, throw the can on the floor. He will not associate the noise with you, but should start to realise that every time he tries to pee inside, he hears this horrible noise. As dogs have very sensitive hearing, he should get the message very quickly. [ isis's advice column | Ask isis A Question ]
amasparks answered Thursday April 26 2007, 5:47 pm: I have a cairn terrier and he does absolutely the same thing. The thing is, you need to let him know that "no" means "no". I have a wii and my cairn even destroyed a game disc for it as well. Make sure to never leave things around the house, close doors and keep boundaries! When he's in the house and you're around, keep an eye on him. If he touches something he shouldn't, say no! don't say bad dog, just say no. no, and shoo him away. keep on doing it repeatedly and give him a treat he likes everytime he moves away when you say no. for peeing on the floor, my dog was looking for attention when he did this. just make sure he goes to go potty every 1 hr - 1 1/2, and whenever he pees, roll up a thin newspaper and hit him. it won't hurt, but the sound will scare him and repeatedly hit the ground with the newspaper saying "bad ground. bad ground". don't say "bad dog," just blame the floor. the dog will appreciate you not getting mad at him-- and give him lots of love! he wants attention too! orphans answered Thursday April 26 2007, 5:30 pm: tina's answer below me is a good answer. it sounds good, but then again, maybe your dog is just after some attention, in which case, when you do punish him, you are giving into his demand for attention, whether its positive, or negative. you could just ignore it when he goes inside, showing that doing that doesnt get any attention at all. as you see theres two ways around it, and you have to use the right way, because if he isnt craving for attention, and you ignore him, then he isnt going to think that theres anything wrong with it. i suggest you ignore it when he goes inside. when you see he is about to go, go outside and give him a treat. also make sure that the place where he pee's is the same spot, whenever possible, or he'll get confused. hope i helped [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
christina answered Thursday April 26 2007, 2:28 pm: Teach your doggie right & wrong with rewards & punishments.
When you see he has to use the bathroom. Take him outside, and when he goes to the bathroom, tell him he's a good boy & give him a treat. Do that enough & he'll eventually learn where the bathroom is, and what to do when he needs to use it.
When he goes inside the house, give him a punishment. Don't abuse him, but make sure you let him know that it's bad & that's not where the potty is. [ christina's advice column | Ask christina A Question ]
