it depends where and what sides you have to put the rubber bands on

ex. i have them on one side
and it just shifts my top teeth so they match exactly with the bottom

The metal braces have wires that are attached to brackets placed on your back molars. After a while tightening the wire alone will not provide enough pressure to move the teeth. By using the rubber band the tension is increased and the teeth are forced to move again helping to straighten them.

my brother had them because he had an overbite. they're supposed to aline your jaw more evenly. that might not be the case for you but if it's not, ask your parents or your ortho. oh, & they hurt pretty bad i guess. sorry. ]:

hope i helped. [:

When I had braces, the main reason for my rubber bands were to straighten the bottom and top and aline them even more. If you are totally not sure what they are for, have your mom or dad call the ortho. & ask, nothing bad could happen from asking :)

they adjust your bite, if you have an overbite or underbite. that means that your top teeth go out farther than they should, or your top teeth don't go out as far as they should. so the rubberbands kind of reposition your mouth so that your bite is corrected.
