Going 'emo'

Question Posted Monday April 16 2007, 12:49 pm

Hey. Well, I'm 13/f and I go to middle school, 7th grade. I know, please believe me, that labels are the stupidest thing on the Earth, but I have to use them just for this particular question.
Okay, well, I used to be 'prep' but now I find myself likeing things the 'emo's' were and at my dad's house, in his neighborhood, I hang out with the 'emo' people. I really like all the things they do, like, the eye makeup, the styles[kind of], and stuff like that.
Problem is, if I just, one day 'become' 'emo' then everyone will call me a poser. What do I do?

And, I have blonde hair and blue eyes, and I love cheerleading. I know, that's kind of 'preppy' but I like being 'emo' more than being 'prep'.

But there's a part 2, lol. My older sister, who is 21, seems to think the only way to go is prep. When I wear even a little bit of eyeliner, she calls me 'emo'. Now, I don't have a big problem with this, her oppinion means nothing to me. But she might get my mom into rsenting the make-up and such. Then what do I do?

first off, don;t stop cheerleading! at my school, there are some really cool 'emo-ish' cheerleaders and if you love it don;t quit.

i have the reputation as a scene kid at my school, and when i was in middle school i was like you and went from preppy to 'emo'. i dyed my hair black, but o already had dark hair. like everyone else said, don't dye your hair! i wish i had blonde hair. anyway, make-up! darker eyes are great on anyone; and maybe staying away from american eagle and abercrombie, try delias! they have a mix of emo and preppy so you can slowly form to whatever style you want to be! hope i helped.

You don't have to choose one or the other! When you go shopping for clothes, don't think "Does this look emo?" or "Is this preppy?". Just think "Do I like this?". Don't pretend to like music you don't like. You can listen to Chiodos AND Justin Timberlake if that's what you want to do. You can wear your band tee WITH your american eagle jeans. You can go to local rock concerts AND still do cheerleading. You can have preppy friends AND emo friends. There IS a happy medium. Please, take my advice and don't commit to just one label. People will admire you more for your confidence then they will for how emo or preppy you are. Trust me, I know from personal experience. You will stand out for all the right reasons.

Now, if you still want to be only 'emo', I would just make the trasition slowly. Baby steps. Start doing your make up differently at first. Then wear an emo shirt or a band tee. Then throw in the emo accessories. Slowly work your way up to where you want to be. That way it won't seem like you changed over night, and people will accept it more.

Good luck =)

One more thing... Since you have blonde hair, PLEASE don't dye your hair black. It will (more than likely) look really unnatural.

okay this is exactly what i just went through last year. i was on dance team and i wanted to hang out with the more emo people and all of my friends were preppy. you need to find your own way to kind of mix them together. for me, the transition from Prep to Emo is another stereotype called Scene.
(heres a site if you don't know what it means [Link](Mouse over link to see full location))
theres something on there called "williamsburg hipster". that was my transition from prep to emo. i basically wore brighter colors and even my prep friends started liking my clothes. one of my signature things is to wear a colored tee with a spaghetti strap top over it. once you take it in stages, you pretty much get the hang of it. your prep friends will still talk to you because you're a bit like your preps and a bit like your emos. basically you satisfy everyone and its a happily ever after =) i hope i helped!

Start off small to avoid the 'poser' labels.
Ask the people around your dad's neighborhood where they get their clothes at.

You can start with makeup.
I wouldn't do anything too drastic with your hair, like dyeing it darker.
Then try accessories.
Some necklaces, earrings, wristbands, bracelets, headbands blahblah.

Then work your way up to the clothing. If you are used to wearing certain clothing labels like A&F or whatever then buy 'emo' shirts and wear them with regular jeans.

Cheerlead if you enjoy it. Wear what you want.. and look the way you want. It's simple but you can get hurt along the way.. with people calling you poser. Sudden changes in appearance can scare people.

But if you are ready to go through that, then go ahead and enjoy your appearance.

I personally like colored hair, chains, dark colors and stripes. Labels are stupid. Don't take 'poser' to heart.

If you go emo, it's going to ruin your reputation. Please stay like a prep. You're only in 7th grade, and you don't realize it. I use to be a prep. And I made the stupid mistake of going emo because I thought it was cool. I regret it now. I had a perfect like. GOSH. Please, dont go emo. :(

Hi.

It's pretty much as you said, these labels are stupid and I also do not believe in them. I've been called emo, punk, goth... pretty much everything because I always dress different, lol. One day I will be wearing a tracksuit (like all the chavs over here) and on another day I'll be wearing my trousers with all the chains and straps all over it with my safety pin top... with me personaly I just wear what I feel comfortable in wearing and when I feel comfortable wearing it.
If you like some of the stuff that your friends wear say you like what they are wearing and where you can get something like that. It was pretty much what I had done because originally I would never have been seen wearing most of the stuff I now wear (which I love!). I even have red hair, which I've had for about 7 months now. :D
Don't think of it as becoming emo. Just think of it as experimenting with different styles of clothes and makeup. Your not changing your personality or anything like that are you? Just how you dress and maybe your makeup because you want to try something different. If people call you a poser though - who cares? Let them. At the end of the day you can wear what you want and if people don't like it then it's their problem. :] By the way - I love eye makeup. I don't wear it personally I just mean on girls it looks amazing because it almost always brings their eyes out and I think it's why I have a thing for girls who are goth, lol. So good luck with all of that and don't be afraid to experiment with differnt clothes and makeup. :]

Don't worry about what other people say. If you like to dress a certain way, dress that way. If you love cheerleading, cheerlead. Do what you like. Look the way you want. You'll be happier that way.

don't just come to school one day then the next day change absolutely everything about yourself. instead, take it one day at a time. like the first week start wearing eyeliner (if you don't already wear it) then next week you can mix in some more "emo" make-up. and the next week maybe get like a band t-shirt or something. you get what im saying? still like cheerleading and don't change your personality on the inside (or if you want to don't do it right away wait awhile while people adjust to your style changes) then after awhile just slowly fade, if you get what i'm saying. sorry this was a little confusing.

good luck :]
