WinnieC answered Thursday April 12 2007, 7:31 am: You need to figure out 3 things: (1) why should someone let you watch their dog vs. someone else? The answer to that question is what you should put in your advertising. Will you compete based on price (lower than the competition)? Quality of care? Experience? Convenience? Added services (e.g. you'll wash & feed their dogs, pick up and drop off, entertain)? (2) How to reach people with dogs -- easy stuff. Network with local veterinarians and animal hospitals. Once they get to know you and trust you, they will recommend you and possibly let you post a flier in their office. Visit dog parks. There are usually lots of regulars there who will at some point or another be in the market for dog watching. If they like you, they'll recommend you. Get out every day and visit other places where people take their dogs (parks, beaches) -- and bring those doggies with you! Dog people love talking to other dog people. Bring business cards and hand them out to people you talk to, let them know you're available to watch their dog. Ask local pet stores if you can leave fliers on their counters. Post notices on craigslist. (3) How will you deal with success? Too often, people trying to grow their businesses aren't prepared for the influx of new business, which can ruin your reputation. Only ask for what you can handle right now and never overpromise and underdeliver. People are VERY serious about their pets and you'll only get one chance to fail. FYI: I pay $32/day for one dog to go to a canine day spa and camp in my area. It's a lot of $$ but it's worth it because the handlers are trained well, know how to handle dogs, the environment is fun (waterfalls, large play areas, toys, etc.), and my dog loves it. I'll pay anything for something that makes her that happy! There are lots of people out there like me. You just have to find them. HINT: They tend to know each other, so once you find one, it's not that hard to network and find a lot more. Good luck! [ WinnieC's advice column | Ask WinnieC A Question ]

orphans answered Monday April 9 2007, 7:33 pm: put up fliers and posters around your town, and maybe ask if you can leave some at like the grocery store or wherever so that more people can find out about it. [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
christina answered Sunday April 8 2007, 10:54 pm: Put up some fliers, or tell some friends. It can spread by word of mouth, MySpace, a flier, anything. But you've gotta do something about it. Put some posters/fliers up around your town & see who calls. [ christina's advice column | Ask christina A Question ]

xWACKYJACKIEx answered Sunday April 8 2007, 10:50 pm: Well, I think you should tell "a small part of the world"
Tell some friends, have them tell their parents, and then it should just pass on, but not too much, where you'll have too much business.
You could also make business cards and put one up at the library or something, usually they have a bulliten board. Again, this wouldn't let everyone know, just a small part of the community. [ xWACKYJACKIEx's advice column | Ask xWACKYJACKIEx A Question ]
