New Years sleepover

Question Posted Friday December 29 2006, 10:13 pm

Two quick questions here. My boyfriend and i (of 1 year 1 month today) are spending new years together. Ill be spending the night at his house. we have done everything BUT sex so far...but i think were ready to move a step forward (im not positive yet...im sleeping on it for a few nights). Anyways....on to the questions
1.) Sooo my bf got a condom from a reliable friend id say....5 months ago...and its an individual one..and it doesnt have a expiration date on it. i was wondering if like condoms go bad after that amount of time or if its more along the lines of a year or something. I know people are supposed to pay close attention to the exp. date...and it sucks that it doesnt have it on it.
2) Is it more likely to not get pregnant if you are having your period (i think i may have mine tomorrow) ? I know he wont care if its bloody/yucky...but i was wondering if it wood be a good thing to be having sex during it (or vice versa...a bad thing). We will, of course, be using that condom.

Soooorrry its so long but i really hope i can have some help with this!! thanks!!!

Hi,

Condoms do indeed expire and that's a huge problem if the date it expires is not there. You just cannot trust your safety and protection to it so throw it out and buy new ones from the drugstore. If you both are unable to do that or obtain them from a birth-control clinic you are not ready to tackle sex just yet. It's protection over embarassment and unwanted pregnancy that is most important here.

If you have your period it is not possible to become pregnant as there is no vaginal lining or way for an egg to get fertilized and not be shed with the menstrual blood. Really think this out before proceeding as a night of passion on New Years that may go wrong because of a questionable condom ain't worth it.

Condoms do go bad. It could go bad from "time" (that's why there's an expiration date) or from environment (heat). If you unwrap it and it's soft and flexible and (if lubricated) moist, it's probably okay. Still, I'd recommend you get a new condom, especially since they are readily available and not expensive--and so, so important!
You are much less likely to get pregnant on your period, but it's not 100%. You ovulated 14 days before your period. That doesn't mean, though, that you won't ovulate early this month--even during your period (I swear to God this is true).
So please celebrate New Year's with a reliable condom! Gigi

The expiration date on condoms is generally a few years away. However, guys carry around single condoms in their wallet, stuff them in their drawers, and do things that could make them break or more susceptible to breakage. Obviously, you don't want to be having sex and then realize the condom has a large hole. Also, condoms should kind of be fitted and high quality. There's a lot of low quality condom brands that are not as sturday or reliable. I say get a new condom and go to your local Planned Parenthood (embarassing I know lol) becaus they will help you get a birth control prescription. That's a LOT better than going to your family doctor. If having sex is a risk you want to take and you love him, go for it! I'm not going to sit here and tell you you're too young or you don't know what love really is. But, pregnancy is always a possibility; you really should use TWO forms of birth contol. It will make you feel a lot better when you just enjoy and don't have to worry about getting pregnant. Oh, the period thing, you can still get pregnant when you're on your period. It's less likely but still. The only bad thing about it isyou might feel uncomfortable. Hokay, so, hope you have a great New Years and hope I helped!

If wouldn't be a bad idea to buy another condom, however most decent brands (Durex, Trojan and such) expire 1 to 5 years after they are made, so you are probably safe. Also, make sure the condom has been stored someplace cool, not out in the sun and that the wrapper hasn’t been torn or broken. If you aren't using a reliable name brand, go get one, they are only slightly more reliable, but I’d say it’s worth it.

I am firm believer that if you are not mature enough to go into a store and confidently purchase birth control, you aren’t mature enough to have sex.

Secondly, yes you are less likely get pregnant on your period then you are three days after it, but that doesn’t mean its risk free. Sperm can live in the female body for several days and women don’t ovulate at the same time each cycle. So you have the right idea: Use a condom.

There is nothing wrong with having sex on your period if you and your guy are comfortable with it. Some women even enjoy it more, apparently it reduces cramps, but some others find it simply uncomfortable. Blood doesn’t make good lubricant. Keep in mind however if this is something you are going to, during your period you are even more at risk to give and get STD’s and viruses. So stick with the condom plan and clean yourselves up afterwards to prevent other common infections like yeast or UTI’s from developing.

I would definitely buy a new condom! It could have expired, and its just all around better to buy a new one. Like the person below me said, temperature plays a part in it. And its better to be SAFE than sorry. :]

Also, it is acutally LESS likely you will get pregnant on your period (However, it is still possible!) But you still have to wear a condom because you can still get STDs.

- I definitely think you should get a new condom. The condom can get fucked up from being in different temperature areas. You honestly don`t know where that condom has been so unless you want to risk it you can. But, that`s probably not the best thing to do! The expiration date is usually a year or something.

- Having sex whenever you have your period you won`t get pregnant. It`s something about your egg dropping, and what not. I don`t really know the explanation. I learned it in Health class. But, it`s probably the best time to have sex when you don`t want to get pregnant.

HAVE FUN. :]]

I think that just to make sure, you should buy new condoms. You never know what may happen! Also, do not wear 2 condoms at the same time
(that causes it to brake). I think there is some condoms that girls can wear too. Ive heard of it, but i am not sure. No you cannot get pregnant when u have ur period. That is the safest time to have sex.
