my house is usually pretty cool, which isnt good for my parakeet. he shivers a lot whenever hes out of his cage. i keep the top of his cage covered with a towel to keep him warm, but what else can i do to keep him warm?
what i reccomened is a water bottle filled with warm water and set inside the cage or hang it up by a perch so they can nestle next to it if they are cold.
~OR~
a heating pad set on low underneath the cage will also be nice. the water bottle is preferable though because if they ARE cold they can sit on it or what not but with a heat lamp if they get too hot theirs no escaping the heat
MyHappyShoe answered Thursday December 28 2006, 11:47 pm: you could always put him in the oven or microwave.. haha just kidding. I used to have parakeets and I kept a small heat lamp close to their cage. Just keep him covered and put the heat lamp next to his cage. Don't put it too close that it burns him but close enough he's cozy. (and make sure it's not TOO hot) [ MyHappyShoe's advice column | Ask MyHappyShoe A Question ]

you might try just keeping the cage uncovered. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
runawayxlove answered Thursday December 28 2006, 4:05 pm: hey, turn up the heat in your home a little notch. you could also get one of those electric heaters that you plug into the wall and put near his cage. good luck =]. [ runawayxlove's advice column | Ask runawayxlove A Question ]
coconutcatastrophe answered Thursday December 28 2006, 3:51 pm: i have 3 parakeets and this used to happen to mine. some things you can do are move his cage next to the heater or the warmest place in the house, because as you probably already know, they're tropical birds and love the heat. you can also use a heavier towel to cover his cage. i used to use a light/normal towel and they were still shivering so i got a heavy one and they were fine.
Vikki27 answered Thursday December 28 2006, 3:51 pm: It might be worth investing in a small fan heater to keep in the same room as the parakeet. Keep a thermometer in there aswell, to make sure it doesn't get too hot. If you're in there the whole time, you won't notice how hot it is. Hang the thermometer from the cage and then you'll have a happy, warm bird! [ Vikki27's advice column | Ask Vikki27 A Question ]
