i'm trying to find some healthy snacks to eat after school. i'm thinking about making my self a banana smoothie, but i'm not sure how. all of the recipes that i've read include ice cream or yougurt. and 1) ice cream would be too unhealthy and 2)i hate yogurt and i don't have any.
is it possible to make a banana smoothie with 1 whole banana and milk in a blender? what else would i need to add to this? and is this considered healthy?
if not...what are some other easy healthy snacks that i can eat. not peanut butter & apples or celery because i don't like those things.
thanks!

This is exactly what I do: instead of using fattening products like ice-cream or yogurt (you could use fat-free yogurt but you won't have a good consistency) try this. Make what's called a "slurry" with corn starch and water, or better yet orange juice or skim milk, and put it in with various fresh fruits to get a thicker consistency. Bananas also help thicken smoothies. [ Flannl_bxrs's advice column | Ask Flannl_bxrs A Question ]

The only problem is that you'll have to have a pretty powerful blender and it might take you a little while to figure out how much of each ingredient to use. For a banana smoothie you'd use a whole banana (without the peel of course!), ice, water, and a little sugar. Throw some of each thing into the blender and if it tastes too watery just add more banana, a different kind of fruit that's stronger and sweeter in flavor (strawberry, pineapple, etc.), or juice. It doesn't matter what kind of juice, but I'd think a mixed berry juice would work well. As it's blending, shake it a little if it gets stuck and if it's really having a hard time chopping everything up add tiny amounts of water at a time to loosen things up while the blender is still on. The less water you put in the better it will be so try not to add a lot. You can make these with basically any kind of fruit. Orange is my favorite. Experiment and you'll find something that you like! Good luck! :) [ sizzlinmandolin's advice column | Ask sizzlinmandolin A Question ]
Duckies_Are_Awesome answered Tuesday November 28 2006, 9:17 pm: Ok well I work for an Ice Cream place and we make smoothies all the time and what we do is add milk, if you have strawberries add a few NOT A LOT of those and a whole banana. Once you have done this put these things together and put them in a blender and blend it enough that its all mushed together. After this if you have an ice cream maker now would be the perfect time to get it out and put ur mix in there and let that go for a while, if you don't have an ice cream maker what you can try is putting some ice in the blender, SEPERATE FROM THE SMOOTHIE and blend the ice, then add the smoothie mixture you made. Hopefull this works for you!!! [ Duckies_Are_Awesome's advice column | Ask Duckies_Are_Awesome A Question ]
snickerzz11 answered Tuesday November 28 2006, 9:16 pm: if you use low fat vanilla ice cream it really wouldn't be too unhealthy. also, using low fat vanilla yogurt wouldn't be too bad if you get some- you say you don't like yogurt but you wouldn't be able to taste it really it just gives the smoothie some consistency.
i love to make strawberry banana smoothies. the recipe i use is:
2 bananas
3 strawberries
1 cup of strawberry juice
1 container strawberry yogurt
ice
blend the bananas separately, then add everything else but the ice, and blend, and then add the ice and blend one more time.
it tastes really good =]
also, the 100-calorie pack snacks are healthy and yummy, and crackers and lowfat cheese (i love this little spreadable cheese squares called laughing cow) are always good. [ snickerzz11's advice column | Ask snickerzz11 A Question ]
theymos answered Tuesday November 28 2006, 9:15 pm: Milk and banana would taste like banana-flavored milk. I'm sure it would be tasty, but not smoothie-like. If you froze it after you made it(not in glass, though, that'll shatter) it'll be like a banana-milk popsicles, which could be ok. Have you ever tried plain yogurt? It's almost completely tasteless. Also, there's sugar free ice cream, do a google search.
Vegetables are good healthy snacks, since they're mostly water. Fruits are ok, but some have a lot of sugar. Whole-grain graham-crackers and raw(unsalted) nuts are good. [ theymos's advice column | Ask theymos A Question ]
Teza answered Tuesday November 28 2006, 9:13 pm: I love smoothies ;]. What I do is put a bannana, maybe some strawberries, ice, & skim milk in a blender & mix it. Sometimes it isn't really sweet so I add a tsp. of sugar so it's sweeter. Also you could make fruit salads with fat free whipped cream. You can also go to google and type in healthy snaks. It will give you a bunch. [ Teza's advice column | Ask Teza A Question ]
