I just got my braces off and i have a retainer now. My orthodontist told me to wear it all the time except when im eating or brushing my teeth but i was just wondering, if i go like 4 hours without wearing it everyday, will my teeth actually shift? how many of you (with experience with retainers of course)actually wore ur retainer ALL the time?
thelaura answered Tuesday September 5 2006, 2:08 pm: I wore mine all the time for months. Then eventually only wore it at nights. However, your teeth MAY move no matter what.
It won't matter too much if you leave it out for 4 hours a day. It might slow down the process.. but it will almost certainly feel tighter when you put it back in.
When you eat with your retainer in, it's actually more effective in holding your teeth together when biting etc. So try not to take it out as much as you're thinking about doing. [ thelaura's advice column | Ask thelaura A Question ]
MummuM answered Tuesday September 5 2006, 12:53 pm: If you go without wearing your retainer your teeth won't go completely crooked, but they will shift and you'll be able to see a difference. When you go to put your retainer in it'll be much tighter and harder to put in, because your teeth would have shifted. If I were you, I'd wear it everyday besides when you eat and such. I didn't wear my retainer for a week or two (because I was sick) and my teeth shifted. I had to go back to my orthodontist and he had to make me a new one; 200 dollars later. So, just keep wearing yours. You only have to do so for 6 months. After 6 months you only have to wear it at night. ♥ [ MummuM's advice column | Ask MummuM A Question ]
uisforukelele answered Tuesday September 5 2006, 12:14 am: when you first get your braces off, you need to wear it MOST of the time. if you forget to wear it at school, big whoop. just remember to wear it that night. you'll be able to tell if your teeth shift- the retainer will hurt a bit when you pop it in. after you've had your braces off for like 2-3 months, you should only have to wear it at night. i got mine off in december and i only wear my retainer like every other night. i can go 4 days without wearing it, and then i'll put it back in for like 5 minutes and my teeth will move back. you definitely don't have to wear it for the rest of your life, so don't stress out if you forget to wear it for a day because as soon as you put it back in, your teeth form to fit the retainer and they look just like they did when you got your braces off. of course, if you misplace your retainer make sure to call the orthodontist so they can replace it pronto because if you wait a week it will hurt a little when you put it in. MelLeDisko answered Monday September 4 2006, 11:44 pm: I actually just got my braces off like, a week ago myself so I've been wearing my retainer as much as I can. My ortho told me to wear mine for 13 hours, so I just put it in 13 hours before I have to wake up the next morning. But then I take it out whenever I need to eat and stuff, but then I put it right back in. I would keep it in as much as possible, because I've seen people who ignored wearing it, and they had to go back to braces cause they're teeth shifted. So no, I don't think you have to wear it ALL the time, but wear it as long as your ortho told you to. I don't know if everyone has to wear theirs 13 hours like I do. I hope I helped. HectorJr answered Monday September 4 2006, 11:40 pm: Take it from experience - wear them as much as possible. My ortho told me to wear it all day for the first week, then just when I sleep after that. If he tells you to wear it all the time, then do so. Take it out when you brush, excersise, or eat.
I actually got really lazy and didn't take it seriously. I didn't put them in every night like I was told. Later on, my teeth started to shift again, not right away but with time. My front teeth started to seperate again. Now I regret it. While mine can be fixed, I almost got to the point of needing braces again. I got a new set of retainers after losing mine and waiting 4 months to say something. So now I wear it as much as possible and have seen great improvements. It really does help. Stick to it. xokristabelle answered Monday September 4 2006, 11:20 pm: I've seen people who didn't wear it a lot, and their teeth went all the way back. I wear mine as much as possible. I'd recommend not wearing it at: language/drama classes, any social situation (party, date, etc), PE. But if you only wear it at night, by the middle of the day, your teeth will look crooked- my friends have noticed. Don't wear it for eating, just bring mouthwash to use after lunch then put it back in.
Music4RETARDS answered Monday September 4 2006, 11:04 pm: My orthodontist told me the same thing. Basically what i do is just where it at night. Yourr teeth will move during the day, but if you sleep with your retainer on, your teeth will go back to the same way they were when you got your braces off.
FrEe2bMe answered Monday September 4 2006, 10:57 pm: Your orthodontists recommendation to constantly wear a retainer is the best advice you can get. It is very effective. Generally, they tell you to wear it 24/7 for 6 months and then only at night after that. This is crucial. Especially when you just get them off. While it seems like a pain, it's worth it. In the first days, weeks, and months after getting them off, your teeth can and usually will shift without a retainer. I'm not saying it will go completely crooked, but you will see a difference. If you leave it out for those 4 hours everyday, you will notice a difference. Maybe not right away, but you will. When you place the retainer back in, it won't lay aw well and it will be stiff. I wore mine for the entire 6 months AND continue to wear it only at night religiously for the past 3 years. If you are worried about what the kids at school with think, just remind yourself SO many other people have to do it too--and you're going to have pretty teeth and a pretty smile! :) [ FrEe2bMe's advice column | Ask FrEe2bMe A Question ]
