Rolling Stone

Question Posted Thursday August 31 2006, 7:42 pm

This question doesn't even relate to the Rolling Stones, but you've seen their tops; they have the tongue!
My realy question is, can you roll your tongue?
I want to survey how many people can and can't. Answer this if you can or can not.
If you are an 'expert', can you tell me how? How long does it take?
I'm taking Spanish 1: Do you need to roll your tongue?

Thanks so much!
Anything will help; and you might get a points!

Tounge rolling is actually a gene you inherit from your parents. Some people have it, some people don't. I don't, my brother does. Anyways, for Spanish, yeah, you have to roll your tounge to say your R's. But it's easy. Pretty much anyone can do it.

Me, I was born already knowing how to roll my tongue. I thought everyone could but actually many of my friends can't! I managed to teach some. To roll your tongue, fold your tongue back so the bottom of it is touching the roof of your mouth. now keep trying to blow out, but in a way that hits your tongue. It sounds complicated but after you know how it is not. Just know that when you're trying you have to somehow use your tongue muscles to help roll your tongue, it's not just the blowing out that does it. hahah :)

I have a pathetic version of tongue rolling, and I'm in Spanish 3. My teacher is pretty fair and nice, so she doesn't mind. I think you should just keep practicing, I have been and it's improved a little...but it still sucks, haha.

i can't roll my tongue, and i'm in spanish I. my teacher said that if you can't roll your tongue, start working on it, but when saying things that need to be rolled just hold the "r" out longer so even if you can't roll it, the teacher can tell that you know it's supposed to be rolled. i actually read on another question about this that you can make an "lr" sound... like, for the letter "rr" in spanish, you could say "elre" instead of "erre" and if you get it right, it could sound like you're rolling your tongue (if you just absolutely cannot get it). luckily for me, most of the tests and things are written. i've only had to do one verbal test over numbers and alphabet, and the teacher was sympathetic because some people just can't roll their r's.

Yeah I can roll my tounge. I think its a trait that you get from family members, I've never met a person who "learned" to roll it. Your either born knowing how or you don't know how. I can roll my tounge but I can't roll my R's so I'm not sure about the whole Spanish thing!

I can roll my tongue. :]

There's no real way to teach someone how to do it ; it's just one of those things people know how to do. Like some people can make shapes and stuff with their toungue ; they just can.

In Spanish 1, I doubt you're learning that much where you need to be able to, but whenever you advance to bigger words and stuff, there's some words where you might need to roll the "r"'s, but I'm sure if you're not able to, and you just explain it to the teacher, it'll be fine if you aren't able to.

I hope I helped.

I can roll my tongue but I'm not sure if it's something you can learn how to do. You've either got it or you haven't. If you can't, blame your parents! :)

LM answered Thursday August 31 2006, 8:21 pm:
Yeah, I can roll my tongue. =D (everyone else is jealous)

It's a trait you can inherit from pretty much any generation, so your great-grandma and you might share this ability, while no one else in your family does.

As for Spanish I, it doesn't really matter. It's an easy class; I've basically been taking it for five years. Haha. Some people can "roll" their R's, but I don't think the tongue rolling affects it. It may help, but hey, I'm not an expert. I'll ask my Spanish teacher tomorrow and edit this answer for you =]

Have you seen the spoof of the Rolling Stones tongue? Instead of teeth, it's dentures. Cause they're so old. Hah, I just remembered that. =D

EDIT: My teacher kind of got confused when I asked her, but she said it doesn't make much of a difference, if at all. Mostly because the R thing is something you develop.
