I'm a columnist on here and have been for about a year or so. I've noticed hundreds of questions dealing with depression. While I understand that it seems to be more common in teenagers now, why is it that it is mostly girls? Is it the way they are raised? Is it imprinted in DNA? I'm interested in the psychological aspect of it and hope to major in it someday, but I've looked it up everywhere online and can't find a reliable source. Anyone know the causes of this or where to find it? Thanks.

eternitysofbliss answered Tuesday August 22 2006, 1:59 pm: short and sweet: they have more pressure than guys. Guys arent pressured to look like brad pitt, but girls are pressured to look like supermodels. Its the mindset society forces upon these kids. littleblufirefly answered Tuesday August 22 2006, 12:42 am: Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance from a lack of seroton (a chemical which makes you happy) being delivered to the brain. The reason that women are more likely to get depression (which they are twice as likely as men to become depressed) is due to the fact that they have more hormonal changes occuring (with puberty, menstration, menopause, pregnancy). Also, something else to consider is that men are less likely to ask for help when they become depressed and are often undiagnosed and seek self-treatment through the use of alcohol etc. They are also at a higher suicide risk (4 times more likely to commit suicide than women). Depression is also more likely to happen to someone if it runs in the family. Certain things can also trigger depression, such as a loss of a loved one, or other tramatic events, or even something like money problems or stress. Some things help depression, like talking about it with a friend or a counselor, but if left untreated it can lead to suicidal thoughts. There are several different types of depression and different stages. You can be bi-polar, which is a mood disorder where someone is happy one minute and depressed the next (manic episodes). Other types of depression include Dysthymic Disorder. This is where you feel sad for more than two years, but are still able to function and do daily activities. Then there is Severe Depression which includes suicidal thoughts. All levels of depression need treatment. There are medications available from a psychiatrist such as Zoloft, Welbutrin, and Paxil. It is also a good idea to seek counseling when depressed. Together, counseling and medication can help a person recover from depression. The medication works on the chemical aspect and the counseling works on the psychological and emotional aspect to help the person in coping with their disorder and their other problems. I am currently in college and majoring in psychology, so if you have anymore questions feel free to ask me. I am very interested in it and love to talk about it.I hope I helped! <3 Dana

holahayley56 answered Tuesday August 22 2006, 12:32 am: Well, I know that depression is caused.. by chemicals in your head, not even or whatever. I forget. I took a class on it. But, its not caused just by that, its also caused by stress, & presure, & media & such.
I think girls get more depressed then guys, because guys don't care about things as much as we do. Like have you ever noticed boys in school.. they come to school, not matching, hair not brushed & so on. Then, you will see most girls, in nice little outfits, makeup, hair straightens/neatly done... whatever. Girls care alot more. They care if they are skinny, pretty, popular, & boys. All that stuff. I think the media has ALOT to do with that. Like Abercrombie & like Hollister.. really like make it a big deal if you shop there or not.. like if you don't shop there, then its like "Whoa, your not cool" or whatever. You know what I mean?
angelgurlemi answered Tuesday August 22 2006, 12:22 am: ok, depression is a very tricky ting, it can be caysed by some thing that happened to you, stress and it can come from your blood line, if boith your parents have it you are more likely to get depression, but some times people dont get it, i think that girls are more depressed then guys is because we live in world that reallymakes girls feel crappy, you turn onthe tv and there are advertizments for skinny people and sex and girls usually think more about thaose things and we get confused and some times then a girl gets depressed, at least that how i used to feel, all and all, the best way to deal with depression is to just get out of the house and situation and just get active in your comunity and make friend that will encorage you to be a better person, and if need be some times people need at take a medication to boost there endorphins and make them happyer, well i hope this helps! XkittyOkatX answered Monday August 21 2006, 11:51 pm: Well, it could be the hormones, but guys have that, too. Girls are more open about that kind of thing, too.
Over all, I think it's because of all the things girls have to worry about today, looks, whether people like them, drama, ect. It's really stressful, and can definately bring on depression. [ XkittyOkatX's advice column | Ask XkittyOkatX A Question ]
