what can happen?

Question Posted Wednesday July 26 2006, 8:26 pm

I'm 15 and in need of a job. The store I want to work at only hires people 16 and older. Should I add a year to my age? what's the worst thing that can happen & could they easily find out? I'm just wondering... thanks!

Pretty much everywhere you apply these days you're required to show them your state ID/drivers liscence and social security number to get on the payroll, most likely before, shortly after or right when you start working. And when your boss finds out that you lied about your age you'd be in big trouble with him/her. But don't worry, it's not that hard to find a job when you're under 16. Just apply at family owned places.

Well, the worst thing that could probably happen is they would fire you and you would probably be banned from ever working at that store again.
The thing is it's not just the store rules that say you must be 16 to work there, it's the law. So lying about your age is a very big deal when it comes to the law.
And yes, they COULD easily find out because you will have to submit your Social Security Number on your job application which you got when you were born, and clearly states your age and birthdate. And plus, don't you think it would be hard to remember the whole time you are at work to say you are 16 and not 15?
What if you accidentally slip up and let your real age out? That could turn out really bad.
If I were you I would just continue doing things like babysitting or working at places such as grocery stores or restaurants (being a hostess) until you turn 16. Or for now, just enjoy not having a job and being able to do whatever you want all the time!

hey,
Sometimes, lying about your age gets you into alot of trouble. So i don't think that you should lie about your age. Besies, there are alot of other places that need you to work for them, it doesn't have to be this shop. You can look for any other. And there are alot of people at your age who work at restraunts and cafes as waiters, or you could work in a clothes shop, or animal shelters or you could make your own bake sales. I am just trying to give you ideas for jobs of your age. You can consider what i said about the different jobs, but one way or another, i am against the idea that you lie about your age.
So take care and if you need any other help, then please be free to contact me.

PLEASE don't lie about your age, you will get fired, when you do turn the legal age to work at this fab place you won't be able to work there because you lied. so just wait till you are 16 and then go for that job. you can either wait another year to get a job at all, or untill you turn 16 work somewhere else. but there are alot of consquences for lieing, so please don't do it. you will regret your lies. good luck with the job search!

A previous responder mentioned this already: When you are accepted for a job, you nearly always must fill out an I-9 form. This proves that you are legally able to work in the United States (I assume that's where you live; if not, then most countries do have similar laws and forms). Since one of those forms of ID will include your birthdate, you're going to have a hard time faking your age.

In any event, do you really want to start your career with dishonesty? If you need the money so badly, there are ways to work for yourself. You can mow lawns, house-sit or babysit, that sort of thing. It doesn't pay as well or as steadily as a "real" job, but it will look good on your application when you do turn 16.

The number-one quality employers look for is HONESTY. In the end, that will take you a lot farther than the extra year would have.

They will probably find out the first time they pull up your social security number, which they will need to do to hire you or to pay you.

If they find out you lied on your application they will immediately fire you with prejudice (which basically means you can't use them as a reference) and they could pursue criminal charges, although they probably wouldn't bother too. But if you put lie on official documentation about your age, like an employment form or application it could be a felony.

Well in my oppinion you should NEVER add a year onto your age because if they find out your 15 you could get banned from that store you would like to work at. Try waiting a year or finding a job very similar to the one you would like. Adding a year on to your age is against the law, never think of doing that!! Hope this advice makes you satisfied, good luck!

They can find out really easily when they hire you they will ask for ID (most places do) usually your birth cert. If they don't and they find out it will say right on the application that its grounds for dismisal even if you are 16 when they find out you can and probably will be fired.

If you really want the job I would write a resume and a cover letter explaining that despite your age you feel you are right for the job and make sure you have awesome references.

If you need help with a letter let me know.

Well, if they did find out, they would probably fire you. If i were you, find a place that hires at 15, like a grocery store, and work there for a year and then apply for a job at the other place. What is one year, and it will go by fast enough. that way, you won't be jeopardizing your position at that place, and you can have money now. Win Win situation.
