seems like a lot of people have questions about tampons

Question Posted Saturday April 29 2006, 8:33 pm

Well, I'm thirteen and I'm starting to use tampons (or at least trying to start). When I try to insert the tampon, it stings a little because it is dry and solid. I know what to do and how to do it but I was wondering if I will get some sort of infection if I use vasaline to make it go in easier. I mean, if I put a little by my area and a little on the tampon. I won't glob it on, but just enough to make it smoother. Before I experiment with this, I want to know if it is a mistake or if it can harm me. I WILL RATE! PROMISE!

i wouldn't use Vaseline. In fact i wouldn't use any kind of lubricant, partly because it could affect how well the tampon absorbs your actual flow and secondly because you shouldn't need it.

Wait until you have quite a heavy or heavy part of your period and start by using the smallest tampon you can find and it should go in ok. Can take some practise and it's pretty weird at first but you'll get it.x

vasaline... no! try k y jelly if you want, because it is a lubricant and should do no harm in there! but, question... why isn't the tampon going in because it is "dry?" are you not on your period? if not, i would deffinitely wait until it comes around because the tampon will go in about 1000 times easier!! not to mention you should NOT be wearing tampons if you're not on your period, and always get the lowest absorbency possible that still works for you to lower the risk of TSS. also, if you're using tampons with cardboard applicators, try playtex slimfits or tampax pearl instead! the plastic applicators with the rounded tip are soo much more comfortable to insert! :) good luck!

Just a note on one of the other answers. Vaseline and petroleum jelly are the same thing! Anyway don't use vasline because it could harbor bacteria and cause an infection. The best thing to use would be K-Y jelly. Trust me...all nurses would know this :-)

Buy the way, you can buy slender tampons for teens.

like the other people said, i definitely would not put vaseline on the tampon, and around your vagina. its also easier if you are doing it while you have your period, instead of before or after (my friend tried to do that to get "adjusted" to the feel, but it wasnt a very smart thing since its so dry). get a slim fit tampon, and dont get the O.B kind unless you want to stick your finger up there too. if you really want it to be a little slicker i'd try maybe to put water on the applicator before you put it in.

have fun! :p

Don't use Vaseline, use petroleum jelly, the vaseline will cause an infection. Do you know that it can cause toxic shock sydrome? so use pertroleum jelly and NOT the vaseline. take this advice before u do this

LaceyIsPrettyBomb answered Saturday April 29 2006, 9:44 pm:
Using vasaline might effect the tampon. You should switch to a smaller size or a different brand. And if that doesnt work, you should wait a little longer to use tampons, because your body might not be ready yet.

hope I helped!

orphans answered Saturday April 29 2006, 9:24 pm:
i wouldnt, because the vaseline would coat the tampon taking away the purpose of the tampon

I'm sure a little petroleum jelly is fine, but it might irritate you.

I suggest Tampax Pearl tampons. They are really smooth.
