After writing an essay about something we liked were gunna have to speak in front of the class for a timed 5 minutes about it. And i'm scared out of my mind. Whenever we have to talk in front of the class i start talking fast (which doesnt help me reach 5 min easily) and like moving my legs back and forth. Its weird, cause usually i'm really up beat and talk real loud and stuff like that. But yeah i'm super nervous. And suggestions that would help me not be so scared?

My advice to you is to practice speaking in front of your friends and family. Ask them to tell you the positives AND negatives of how you presented and spoke to get you used ot speaking in front of a group. The corrective input will help you try and perfect your presentation and the positive feedback will raise you self-esteem and confidence to make you feel more comfortable giving the speech.

Well, before you recite your essay, tell your friend that you are going to read it on them. And only focus on reading it to your friend in your class, just look straight at your friend. It will be much more easier. Good Luck!
TheTeenGirl answered Friday April 21 2006, 5:50 pm: Try taking comfort in knowing the fact that everyone else is scared too. Maybe not everyone is scared, but trust me, there are about 5 or more people who are feeling the same way as you are when speaking in front of the class.
What you should pay attention to is impressing the teacher instead of the class, I know that sounds really hard. I felt the same way when speaking in front of the class, but then I just read my paper and looked up at the class every once in a while as if I'm trying to tell them something important. It's ok to get a little shaky while speaking, but just take deep breaths and keep reading clearly. The worst that can happen is if you accidently pronounce a word wrong and that is definetly not a big deal.
My teacher really liked it when I'd speak clearly as if I mean what I'm reading and look up and the class as I speak from rememberng a sentence. If you can't seem to remember very well when looking at the class, you can always make something up in it by adding a fact or something. The important thing is that you keep clam and know that you aren't the only one whose feeling tense about this.

Mr_Skittles answered Friday April 21 2006, 4:37 pm: Usually if someone is talking I never pay attention to them. I would say, at any given moment, only half the class is listening. Take comfort knowing it is probably the same for you, too.
Don't acutally look at the class. Just stare behind them. At a wall or something if you need to look up.
It's hard to be nonchalant while speaking in front of a class. Once you get up there most of your nervousness will disappear and it will be fine. It's just getting there that sucks. [ Mr_Skittles's advice column | Ask Mr_Skittles A Question ]

1)try your hardest to talk slowly
2)answer any questions
3) don't look at the wall celing or wherever, Look at the class when you are talking
4) practice your speech consistently in front of your mirrar
5)everytime you start to swing your legs, pinch your leg (somewhere where no one can see you doing it)
6) before going to talk, tap your temples three times with your index finger... it will help you concentrate.
hev7777777 answered Friday April 21 2006, 3:50 pm: Well, really, you shouldnt be scared, because you are going to have to do it all thruoghout the rest of your life, even if you are wanting to get a job sometime, because there is an interveiw then.
If you get nervous, well, maybe try doing the opposite, and talk slower.
I used to get nervous, and i would make sure that i had some jewelry on, and i would fittle with it almost the whole way through.
Well, i hope that i have helped at least a little bit, and good luck on the presentation. [ hev7777777's advice column | Ask hev7777777 A Question ]
forever21 answered Friday April 21 2006, 3:10 pm: : Oh jeez :/ the same thing kina happens to everyone. Sometimes, when I'm standing in front of people in class or whatever I'm like "So, um, why am I even scared again? This is so stupid." And then it feels like it's not such a big deal anymore. So maybe you could think about stuff like that, just kina take it easy, don't treat it like a super critical thing. Because then you just worry more ya know?
soendearing answered Friday April 21 2006, 2:38 pm: I kinda have the same problem. You should just take a deep breath before you get up there, and just consintrate(sp?) on what your reading and forget everyone is there. It helps me calm down a little. Hopefully it will help you too :] [ soendearing's advice column | Ask soendearing A Question ]
