Bad nap

Question Posted Saturday April 15 2006, 8:58 pm

It's bad to take naps but sometimes I just can't focus anymore and just lay down and sleep for 2 hours about and when I wake up I feel so crappy! Thirsty, with a headache, and bad. I don't know if it has to do with not eating breakfast and eating a medium sized salad for lunch and a junk food snack at 3 when I get home from school. Could it be Diabetes? Probably not but I am not sure of anything right now. This happens a lot.

it might be because within the 2 hrs your body has entered into REM. i forget what that means. but its like your rythem of sleeping. its a deep sleep. if you want a nap to feel like recharged take a 20 min nap so you dont go into REM.

One thing I've learned is it's a BAD idea to nap more than 30-40 minutes at a time. You'll wake up groggy, crabby, and sometimes, it'll mess with your sleep schedule and you'll have a more difficult time falling asleep around the time you normally retire for the night.

I know it's cliche, but breakfast IS the most important meal of the day. It keeps your energy levels up and you'll have a better focus. You don't have to go all out and have some 6 course breakfast, but at least a piece of fruit and some toast would give you a little extra pep. You may not even need that afternoon nap. Try it out for a week, see how you feel. Drink plenty of water, eliminate the junk food for a week, and eat more protein at lunch and breakfast.

Do you sleep with your mouth open? I have feather pillows. I'm allergic, but I just can't help myself, lol. It stuffs up my nose and I'll usually wake up with a dry mouth and really thirsty.

There is such a thing called "power nap". It means sleeping and waking up on your own. Let your body rejuvenate on its own and you'll wake up more refreshed. If you have a time constrain, set your alarm to the latest time you can afford to wake up. The duration depends on individuals. Some power naps can be as short as 10 minutes and as long as 2 hours or more.

Personally, i have a very hectic working routine that requires a lot of thinking. When i just can't think, i power nap. Go to sleep and let my body wake up on its own. After that, ideas will just flood in.

Proper eating habits will help to maintain a good health. Irregular and unhealthy food intake can contribute to those "headaches".
Have breakfast, at least eat something. Skip lunch if you wish but have a sandwich a little later during the day.

Before you sleep, try drinking a glass of water.

If you are still worried, go for a routine medical examination. At least it'll give you a peace of mind....

I hope this help.... Good luck and sleep well

its not bad to take naps, but if your constantly tired you might want to go to a doctor to check your blood for low iron or if your super tired and dont feel good mono. probably not diabetes. i watched a show about naps and if your going to take a short nap, set a timer for 20 mins, cus if you sleep like 45 you feel exhausted after when 20 minutes is supposed to refresh you. but if your completely exhausted and you need a super long nap, make it atleast an hour and a half. eating breakfast is definetly important to keep you being happy and awake because thats the thing that starts your metabolism in the morning, so your metabolism isnt getting started until lunch. junk food doesnt do much for your health even though its tasty, but if it has a lot of sugar and carbs, you may feel kinda "high" and really full of energy then just crash from the carbs and have to take a nap. sorry its long. hope it all helps!

If you are concerned about diabetes or any other illness you should see your Dr. for appropiate testing.

However, I have those same symptoms when I don't drink enough water. Inability to focus, headache and thirst are also symptoms of dehydration. Try drinking 8 glasses of water each day and see if this changes. If you drink any beverage with caffine it will only increase the dehydration, so in this case plain water is best.

Here's the thing; long naps aren't good for you.

In our experience as sleepless university students, my roomie and I have come up with the best way of doing things. Set your alarm for 20 minutes. A 20 minute nap gives you rest, but it doesn't give you that groggy feeling that a 2 hour nap does :D
