That's the site that I found the depression symptoms on! I've had all except the last 3 and the running away one. I'm relly scared and I don't want to tell my mom because she has alot on her plate right now and I don't want her to knoe. My mom has depression too I think and they did say it could run in families. She had it when she was 28 or 30 and now I have it wen I'm 14! I don't want to have it forever and I would relly appreciate any possible help!! Please because I don't want to grow up morbid
I can't really tell you how to feel better because I think everyone has to overcome depression in their own way. The only thing I would say is that unless you really feel you have no choice, stay away from anti-depressants if you can.
I went through a very serious bout of depression a few years ago (tried to slit my wrists) and the doctor prescribed me anti-depressants. I never took them and I got myself over it because I wanted to know I was feeling things for myself, rather than because a drug dictated it.
The problem is, you need to break yourself out of it. The best recommendation I can make is that you think about all the stuff you used to do that was fun. Think about going out with friends or just hanging out, going shopping and so on. When you're very depressed, it's difficult to make yourself do those things because it gets to a stage where you almost feel afraid to be happy. That's why you have to MAKE yourself do it. My turning point was a pillow fight in my road with my sister and a friend. You need to find your turning point. Chances are you might literally have to force yourself to do whatever it is but you will start to feel better when you do.
I would also recommend that you sort the problem at its source. As I said, if your Mother is depressed, it follows you would be too because you would be picking up on her emotions. See if you can get some counselling so you can get things off your chest because you may not want to tell your Mum but you should be able to and you need to talk to someone about the things that bother you.
You will start to dig yourself out of that black hole but you will need to try very very hard. It's like walking through quicksand. It can be done but it's tough and you need to really want to do it. Please try. [ Vikki27's advice column | Ask Vikki27 A Question ]

I also think you should tell your mom no matter how much she has on her plate she's your mom and she would want to know.
good luck
lulabelle answered Wednesday April 12 2006, 2:53 am: There seems to be an epidemic of depression these days. The Doctors are all too happy to prescribe all kinds of medications that only mask the symptoms but do nothing to help the person. I was diagnosed with depression and they put me on Prozac, Zoloft and something else, I can't remember what it was. I'd go to the Doctor once a month and all they would do is give me a refill for my prescription. There was never any therapy involved. I also have ADHD. I took myself off of the medications (against Doctors orders) and started treating myself with natural methods. There are all kinds of things that you can do to help yourself naturally. Only eat organic foods. All of the chemicals that they put into our foods today definitely trigger adverse responses from us. I consider these responses as being an allergic reaction to the chemicals that are put into our foods. For example; the cows that we eat today are treated with hormones, steroids and antibiotics. The hormones are used to keep dairy cows in a state of lactation. Their utters get so huge they can't stand up. You've heard how women suffer from the condition of PMS. Well, PMS is a hormonal imbalance, which creates a state of depression in women. It is my belief that eating the commercial milk and cheeses on the market today adds greatly to this condition and may even be the major cause. 30 or 40 years ago a lot fewer women suffered from this condition. It only stands to reason that eating more hormones is only creating an imbalance. Purchase only organic milk and cheeses that are hormone free. Part of being a teenager is the sudden influx of hormones. Add this to the hormones that are being added to your food and you've got trouble.
The meat is shot up with steroids so that the cows grow faster. It is illegal for us to take steroids because of the extreme emotional outburst it creates in people. Perfectly normal people who take steroids have been known to become so volital that they have killed people. If they had not been on steroids this would never have happened. Their emotions are out of control. Yet, it is ok for us to ingest steroids by eating the meat. It use to take 6 months to raise chickens to adulthood. Now it takes only 6 weeks because of the steroids. This, to me, explains the irrational behavior people are exhibiting while driving a car, for example, or in line at the movies. Then, because they are not feeding the cows their natural diet they have to give them antibiotics to keep them from getting ill until they are prepared for out table. Antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your intestinal track. You need to eat fermented foods like yogurt to get that back into balance. Any imbalance in your body will create a state of depression. Organicly raised animals are more humanly raised and have less disease.
Start drinking at least your body weight in ounces a day. That would mean that if you weigh 100 lbs you should drink 100 ounces of water every day. Water is what our body runs on. It flushes your body of toxins and helps your body run more efficiently. Every cell in your body uses water and drinking it is one of the most important things you can do for your body.
There are a couple of supplements that you can take that will help you have a more uplifting experience. One is St. Johns Wort. This is not only an antidepressant but it is also a natural antibiotic. I put a website below for you to visit that is a book about St. Johns Wort. You don't have to buy the book. Just click on the chapter you want to read and the chapter will come up. There is another herb that has been used through the centuries as a stress relief sedative and that is Holy Basil. I put a couple of websites about that down there as well. These supplements can help you lift your mood without any adverse effects.
Cut out white processed sugar in your diet. This mimics depression by giving you a peaked manic/euphoric state and then the extreme lows when it wears off. Check your labels when purchasing things in the store. It will be difficult to find things w/o sugar in them. This society is addicted to it. I compare sugar to cocaine. Think about it. How do you get cocaine? You boil the cocaine leaves down until you get a fine white powdery substance. How do you get sugar? You boil down the sugar cane until you get a fine white powdery substance. Whatâ??s the difference? The difference is one is legal and the other is not. They are both bad for us when taken in such condensed quantities. There are other sweetners out there that react better in our bodies such as Agave. This is a cactus juice. It has a slight caramel taste to it and it is 30 Xs sweeter than sugar. It is also thick like honey. Diabetics can have it because it doesn't spike the insulin levels. I've also included a website on sugar below as well.
I hope this helps to put you on the road to a more healthy and effective emotional improvement.
karenR answered Tuesday April 11 2006, 11:43 pm: Sometimes depression is a normal reaction to difficult situations. It isn't always permanent
and teens have it often but not constantly.
If you have a lot of things happening in your life right now that cause you stress, you're going to have some depression.
So hang in there and hopefully it will go away on its own. If it doesn't in a few weeks, then you may need to get some help for it. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
queenhearts answered Tuesday April 11 2006, 10:48 pm: A lot of people have those symptoms. You have to go to a doctor to get the right information. It's a chemical in your brain.. You may be just fine and just unhappy for whatever reasons. Sometimes people think they have it when they don't. [ queenhearts's advice column | Ask queenhearts A Question ]
TragicGlamour answered Tuesday April 11 2006, 9:55 pm: My mom has depression. So does my grandma and great grandma. Its hereditary. Most of my friends have it too. If you leave it untreated it could get really bad. My mom spent 5-7 years of my life asleep, laying in her bed, crying from depression. I really suggest you talk to your mom about it and go to a doctor. Meds for depression really help and your doing fabulous by looking into the symptoms and everything.
Razhie answered Tuesday April 11 2006, 9:52 pm: Agh! I hate those online things. They are not reliable at all! Any old fool can write one and put it online, and many people can suffer from one or two of those symptoms without being depressed or for completely different reasons.
The deal is simple: If you are suffering, ask for help.
Don't worry about labeling yourself and don't try to diagnose yourself, let a doctor do that. Just tell someone you trust what you are feeling and ask for help.
Depression, or really any mood disorder, is same as any physical infection and wont go away if you just leave it alone, it will get worse. And you can't cure by yourself either, you need doctors or some other support to beat it.
I really think you should tell your mother because she is in the best position to understand and help. But if you rather not, tell someone else you trust, a teacher, a friend's parent, an aunt or uncle, any adult who will help you. Never accept unhappiness as the norm, get the help you need to fight it. [ Razhie's advice column | Ask Razhie A Question ]
amandaxxbearx3 answered Tuesday April 11 2006, 9:47 pm: okay. i went through something sorta like this. I didn't tell my mom because i didnt think she would care. I did talk to my friends A LOT! they pretty much got me through it so it is a must that you talk to your friends or a conselor at school if you can't go to your mom. Depression does not run in the family if you look at it in sense of genes, however as people grow up we learn life attitudes and behavior from the people adn enviorment we are around. So if you look at it in this sort of way it can be passed down. But this can be your choice. Be smart about everything and make sure you stay actice at school. You will not have this forever.
and your mom has a lot on her plate but she is still your mom and loves you very much adn wants the best for you. You can talk to her if you want. [ amandaxxbearx3's advice column | Ask amandaxxbearx3 A Question ]
