LoveMeDo answered Wednesday March 22 2006, 7:14 pm: Paint you're nails or get them done with something really pretty, like a french manicure or a flower design. Mabye you won't want to bite them if they look pretty. I've also heard of a type of nail polish that makes the nails taste nasty when you bite them, so you don't want to do it. Hope I helped! -Hold on to a small object, such as a stone or a ball to keep your hands busy and out of your mouth.
-Coat your nails with bad-tasting polish, available at the drugstore
If all else fails, talk to a doctor or dentist for ideas. But don't give up--it takes time and patience to undo habits.
fabulous11 answered Tuesday March 21 2006, 4:36 pm: Yeaa i had the same probalem but now i stopped. I use to try to make mysefl stop by puttin fingernail polish remover on thenm cause it lasted long and tasted so bad. Also everythime i put my hand in my mouth to bite them all i would think of is all the things i could have touched and all the germs so it grossed me out so i didnt really do it tat much. Or you could go get your nails done like acrilic(spelling?) ones, cause they cover your nail so you cant bit e. That is what i do and it works good.

xoMarisox answered Tuesday March 21 2006, 3:56 pm: My mom used to have this problem. She used this like clear nailpolish that tasted bad. So, when she started to bit, she would pull away her hand quickly because it tasted awful. It wasn't really nailpolish, I know you asked for something different then nailpolish.. but you can find what I'm talking about at a drug store. jeanine278972 answered Tuesday March 21 2006, 3:31 pm: At wal*mart they have a nail polish called "Stop the Bite" and its clear but the bottle has a stop sign on it. It does work. I have the same problem but i got that stuff. (i still have short nails cuz i couldnt get used to long nails)
You just paint your nails with it like once a day and when you go to bite your nails it tastes really bad and the after taste stays in your mouth and you eventually learn your lesson. I used it for like 3 months and broke the habit but i started it again when i cut my nails short.
It really does work and it only costs like $3 for a bottle.
Advicelady6798 answered Tuesday March 21 2006, 3:30 pm: alot of people get their nails professionally done so they can avoid that habit. And people also just paint their nails so they pick the paint off instead of the nail. it is a hard habit to get rid of if you continue to try and not do it each day just take it one day at a time and eventually you will think that it is gross to do that. DeadMemories answered Tuesday March 21 2006, 3:04 pm: I know what you mean. Well, what I do to stop the madness (fingernail biting) is when you wash your hands leave a little bit of soap under them. I know it sounds bad but trust me. In 5th grade I did that I don't bite them anymore!
To keep you from biting the finger-nail polish off you need to buy some clear kind, perferably the kind called, "Hard As Nails." It stays on longer and makes your nails hard to they are much harder to chew off. You can find this product at your local drug store or Walmart.
ASKMEEE13 answered Tuesday March 21 2006, 1:01 pm: i have the same probably and im catholic and hate to let god down so i gave it up for lint and its working so far my nails are real loong so maybe make a promise to someone that means alot to and hate to let them down.
CheshireKat answered Tuesday March 21 2006, 12:34 pm: if you don't want anything bad-tasting on your nails (i think sally hansen makes something called nail biter with has an utterly awful bitter taste, but it didn't work for my brother ^_^), then you can carry around something to nibble on like a granola bar whenever you get that nail-bitin' urge.
do your nails tear and peel a lot? that was usually why i used to bit my nails. i'd see one little tear on the edge of a nail and just pick and chew at it all day. if your nails are a little weak, sally hansen also makes a bunch of polishes and lotions too i think that help strengthen nails.
something you can do to encourage yourself is to check out your hands at the end of the day when you haven't bitten on your nails or only some of them. wash 'em, clean up the edges, paint them if the mood should strike you. take a good look and see how good your nails look when they haven't been chewed and nipped at. this is a big thing that helped me stop.
in the end, it really comes down to either distracting yourself and summoning up the willpower to check yourself and just stop every time you feel your hand going to your mouth.
hope this helped. good luck with fightin' the nail
TheOldOne answered Tuesday March 21 2006, 12:18 pm: There are products specifically designed to stop nail-biting that are sold in drugstores and online. You paint or rub them on your nails, and they apparently taste incredibly horrible.
Personally, I stopped biting my nails when I realized that I'd worn a grove in one of my front teeth from biting them. I don't know if that would work for you, though. [ TheOldOne's advice column | Ask TheOldOne A Question ]

jbdreamer answered Tuesday March 21 2006, 11:18 am: Get a manicure and paint your nails. If they are pretty and covered in polish, you'll stop yourself before bitting into them. [ jbdreamer's advice column | Ask jbdreamer A Question ]
