Spelling Bee---13/f, 7th grade

Question Posted Saturday March 18 2006, 9:44 pm

Jesus, I just got back from the Spelling bee. I had been studying like a fiend the night before (From 4:00pm-10:00pm), I had the whole Paideia memorized, and I was almost sure that I would be headed for Washington D.C. in a few months. OMG! GODDAMNIT! It was the first round, and they gave me a really easy word, and I completely forgot the word. The word was "notary." Isn't that an easy word? I bet everyone here can spell that word. I just blanked out on that word and forgot. They rang a little bell, and that signified that I was the 4th person out on the 1st round. I suddenly remembered how to spell the word when they rang the bell, but it was too late. I lost.

All of that hard work----flushed down the toilet. If it weren't for that stupid word, I know I could have won. I have never lost a spelling bee in my life. I need to talk.

Anyone who at least tries to make me feel better gets a 5

haha dont worry. i spelled festivities wrong and got out in the 5th round. so i wouldnt stress over it. theres always next year. you're gonna look back on this and laugh when your a senior. for next time, dont get all flustered. take your time, deep breath, spell the word in your head, then into the microphone.

Ehh. I don't like Paideia. I was NOT best friends with that book.

Don't sweat it. I was pretty sure I'd be in DC, too, but then I got out here in Los Angeles and placed 16th. =[. I know that I did my best, though, and that should be what matters.

Don't feel bad because you lost one spelling bee. There is always more. Perhaps if you had studied a bit more and gotten more sleep, you would have done better. Next time, try studying for a few hours the entire week before the bee.

As for the actual spelling, I pat you on the back for being able to spell. I myself have an incredibly hard time spelling some easy words like awkward. I always spell it "akward".

I sympathise with you I really do. When I was younger I used to play tennis on a reasonably ok level (the story is somewhat related so bear with me). Anyways I was away at this tennis camp thing and we were split up into different groups after having your techique evaluated. I ended up in the top group (out of some possible six or so different levels).

At the end of the camp there was a tournament scheduled. Something that they made a bit of a fuss about. Anyways I was really looking forward to it and come the big day I was there and ready to play. Frist round I was drawn against an old guy (it was his 60th birthday)from one of the middle groups. I was about 24 and in peak shape at the time. Well... it all began with me remarking that the sun was bothering me. Somehow, adding the nervousness to this, I was suddenly completely and utterly unable to hit the ball in. Not even softly. Not even if I tried to make a soft tiny little lob shot... it either netted or went out. I have never tried "instant retardness" like that before. It was like I had picked up the racket for the first time in my life.

I tried to run the old man around (he also had a bad knee which was strapped like an Egytptian mummy). But all was to no avail... first round loss to an old somewhat overweight man with a mediocre technique. Oh well, at least his familly was thrilled.

I dont know if this helps you in any way. I just wanted to explain that I really do understand exactly what its like to go completely blank. The best thing you can do is learn from it. It is usually a case of nerves, and if you learn to control them you will be all the stronger next time.

When I was about 12, almost the same age you are, I lived in Montana. I had also not lost a spelling bee in my life. Spelling was my THING, and that year I entered my town's spelling bee and won, and my county's, and I ended up going to state. I made it all the way to the final round, and I was one of four people left, despite the fact that people were mouthing the answers in the audience, which was pretty lame. The guy who pronounced the words had a very odd accent, and sometimes I have this weird mental dyslexia in which I hear or see something completely differently than it is, like a letter or a word. Anyway, the man pronounced the word, and I had NOT A DAMN CLUE what it was. I used all the chances they give you (like asking the root of the word, etc.) and ended up spelling a COMPLETELY different word. My mom and I had driven 6 hours to get there, and I fucked up in the last round. The shitty thing was that I could spell every other word, including the one that won the spelling bee. I hope THAT makes you feel better. ;)

p.s. To this day, I can't remember what word it was.

Hey, you can't change the past. All you need to do now is to get over it. Really, it's so easy. I mean, I know losing feels like CRAP..but what can you do about it?
Go shopping & buy yourself something pretty!
Reward yourself for attempting. This will be a funny story for your kids later on.
Laugh about it..I mean, at least you weren't the first person out of the first round!--That would suck. haha

I really hope you feel better--and hey, there's always next year!

I know how you feel! I was in a spelling bee, and I totally bombed an easy word--"jaundice."

I studied, too. At first, I felt like you did-- That all of that studying and hard work was a waste of time because I didn't win. But then I realized that the studying wasn't a waste of time at all. Think about it-- Studying words expands your vocabulary. Teachers like having many different kinds of words on formal papers. As you get older, using small "baby words" won't look good on papers. Also, if you need to speak in public, having a good vocabulary will come in handy. It will make you sound intelligent and it will show people that you know what you're talking about.
Plus, you can help people who can't spell as well as you can.

It may seem like a big deal now, but in the long run, it's not important that you didn't win, but that you got something out of the experience.

I hope I helped, and if you have any more questions, feel free to leave one in my inbox!

Don't beat yourself up about it. You're HUMAN. You messed up, and you're probably going to mess up again. That's what humans do. Nobody is perfect. And there are tons of people who have never WON a spelling bee in their whole life. Oh, and being able to spell is actually a special gift. There are a lot of people, really SMART people, who can't spell to save their lives. It's something you either have or you don't.

And if that doesn't make you feel better, [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) has some wonderful pictures of faeries.

Or, if you don't like faeries, you may consider www.iloveegg.com. Even if you don't like eggs, you'll probably enjoy this site. It is too weird for anybody to hate. I suggest viewing it in English ;)

Aw, girl, I'm so sorry. My dad did a spelling bee once, in like the 70s though, haha, and he lost on the word 'shovel'. Hahah, wayy worse than yours, I mean how easy is shovel? Hahah, he spelled it "shovle". He felt so bad, I mean it's not like he won a prize or anything, but he had studied so hard, and then gets out with shovel. Sometimes life is unfair girl, I'm so sorry you got out, cheer up. :]
