There are many types of popular people. There are popular people who are caring and loving people. I've known quite a few of those. The so-called popular people that you are talking about are your garden-variety high school popular bully. These people use fear to maintain their position. These mean tactics that you are seeing being used in high school are the same tactics used in the corporate world. It's a popularity contest, unless you are in some kind of research or technical field. The good news is they can't be mean to you directly anymore. The bad news is they love coming up with rumors to undermined people. What you need to do is come up with some tactic that will make you necessary to them. Do that and they will be nice to you because they need you. This will work better when you get out into the working world. While you are in school it is just so superficial. It's all about who looks the best, has the most money, wears the best clothes, athletes, etc. There is very little compassion while you are in school. College is much better. You'll enjoy that. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it will always be there. There are just some people, for whatever reason, who simply thrive on the humiliation of others. This makes them feel more powerful and superior to others. I know this will be hard for you to understand right now because it just doesn't look that way, but these people are living in fear themselves. They do what they do so that they feel in control. Their world feels so out of control to them that they have to intimidate others. By doing this they maintain their delusion that they are superior to those they trample. Don't buy into it. I know what I'm saying is easier said than done, but stop worrying about what they may say or do. Just go about your life and do the things you want to and enjoy yourself. If they insult you or try to intimidate you simply ignore them. Don't show any reaction to them in any way. You can even feel pity for them because it is sad. And when you think about it their behavior doesn't deserve your attention. Eventually you will loose your intertainment value and they won't bug you anymore. They only bug people that they get a reaction from. You wouldn't be fun anymore. I do wish you the best of luck here. I know it's tough but it's like one of those initiation rites. We all have to live through it.

Because they become popular and then people are like "Oh, I'll talk to you so I can get popular, even though I don't know you, and then get upset when you turn me down"
Popular kids aren't mean, they just don't have time to deal with lower people like yourself. And the reason to be friends with someone who is mean is so that you can be popular or use them to your advantage or you yourself are mean.

People are attracted to the self confidence they have, which they only have because they make everyone else feel bad. People generally try to hang out with popular people because it increases their own status slightly.

if you think about it, mean people are constantly putting people down, to make themselves superior, once they've put down enough people that people are afraid to be embarrased again by her they try to be nice around her, they probably know on the inside that its a mean person but they dont want to be embarrased because they spoke out against her.

perhaps around that person you would feel superior then the rest. you may feel better then the unpopular. and as such you feel better by others pain. its evil to think about.
