I have had many teddy bear hamsters that have acted like this at one time or another. It is simply because of old age. You should still do everything normally- like the type of food and amount of exercise. All of my hamters chew on the bars at the top of the cage. This is very normal. Hamsters need to chew- if they don't their teeth will grow WAY out of control. Don't worry it doesn't sound like there is anything at all wrong with your hamster.

Hey,,
i used to have hamsters and they also used to chew on the metal bars of there cages so i went out and bought them gnaw bars which the nibble to help keep their teeth from getting to long.

your hamster may be getting old, thats maybe why he seems tired and less active. hamsters dont live very long, the average life span is between one and a half years to three years. sometimes they may live longer, for about five or sometimes less.
Its maybe cos its cold that hes less active? put a bit of extra bedding in for him and if he wants it he'll use it hamsters are clever animals.. well some one of mine was a bit scatty lol.
as for the eating... i used to give mine sliced apple, lettuce, cucumber, pear, grapes but dont give him to much as he still needs his regular dried hamster food make sure you wash it all first!!. also try the cereal cheerios.
to make sure your giving your hamster the right foods search on google to get a list of dietry information as anything citrusy is not aloud such as orange, lemon, pineapple etc. so make sure you check this out.
Also.. your hamster may be dehydrated, make sure you change his water daily, with fresh cold water. sometimes the water bottles get jammed so roll the bottle over the top of your hand to make sure the water if coming out properly.

If you have a excercise ball for him put him in that for no longer than 20 minutes a day. If you try him in it and he doesnt seem to be moving around much, it may just be that hes getting old and needs rest so leave him in his cage and try not to disturb him too much. if hes out for a while in the night have a hold of him then to prevent waking him during the day.

If your hamster is young and your still worried maybe se a vet?

Hope i helped

your hamster chewing on metal bars is fine. he just needs to saw down his teeth a little. the reason he is tired and less active is either because there is no way for him to get ENOUGH excersize (try adding more things which he can explore). his diet may not be diverse enough, or he also may be becoming old

Hi there,

Your hamster chewing on the bars of his cage is nothing for you to worry about! He's just sharpening and shortening his teeth! If him chewing the cage really bothers you then get him a milk bone (they are for dogs and you can get them at the pet shop) my hamster used to love them. She also loved strands of uncooked spaghetti and pasta and as a special treat we used to give her a piece of cooked corn on the cob, we dangled it through the top of her cage on a piece of string and she'd spend HOURS trying to run off and bury it with provided her with entertainment as well as vitmains and something to sharpen her teeth on!

The other thing to remember is that hamsters can hibernate!

All it takes for a hamster to want to hibernate is the temperature aroung him to drop a few degrees and it may male him start going into a hibernation period. Make sure he is somewhere warm and give him some extra bedding and he should be back to normal in no time if this is what is wrong!

If you do this and don't notice any change in 2-3 days then I would advise getting him checked out by a vet!

Hope all goes well!!

Since it's winter time, he's probably very cold. Try to keep his living quarters warmer and more comfortable for him. Give your hamster extra cotton to make a bed with, and keep the room holding his cage at a reasonable temperature. He might be biting at the bars because he doesn't like his home, but I'd ask a vet if you're really concerned.

I used to have two hamsters.

That happened to my second hamster and there isn't really much you can do.
My hamster died after about 3 weeks or a month because she got more sicker.

If this continues for another week then you can try taking your hamster to a vet.

Chewing on the metal bars is normal my hamsters use to do it all the time.

Goodluck with your hamster.

I used to have a hamster and I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to happen. Why don't you take him to the vet? If he is still young I'm sure there's something you could probably try to prevent him from getting sicker. livejournal.com/users/hamsters usually can provide some good advice about this kind of stuff. I hope he's all right!
