Have I stunted my growth?

Question Posted Monday December 12 2005, 3:11 pm

Basically, in the last 6 or seven months I've lost abut 10.5 pounds/three quarters of a stone just through cutting down on certain foods and running. I've never stopped eating completely although there were certain times where I ate minimally and may have not eaten quite enough. I didn't really need to lose the weight in the first place I just had some puppy fat but now i am much skinner (48.7kg/7.6 stone/107 pounds)and generally happier. My only concern is that I may have stunted my growth through this. I am 15 years old and 5 ft 4 inches. Is this likely? x x x

But i aint seen the same 4 girls so if your the latter gender i cant promise anything.

Well.... that sounds pretty normal for a 15 year old. Everyone is different hights, so it may just be your hight and your rate of growth. But I have heard of people stop growing because of not eating properly, so that is a definite possiblilty.

Congrats to working hard and losing that weight and feeling comfortable about yourself! But please, please, please eat right!!

If you are worried, talk to your doctor or a dietician about your eating habbits and whether you should be eating more whilst you are growing. Your weight for your heigh is on the low side and actively dieting at this stage may well be harmful to your body for that reason, but I don't think there's any reason to suspect that your weight loss over the last six months will have damaged your body as you did it gradually by sensible gradual changes to your daily routine rather then by crash dieting.

You sound like you have a sensible attitude and you realise that you could affect your health by not eating properly. Be careful not to deprive yourself of too much in your quest to be healthy and I'm sure you'll be fine. All the best.

well if your 15, you've basically stopped growing. so this probably didnt stunt your growth. you might grow a little more but not much

thats not that much at all. you shouldnt stunt your growth. there are alot of people that have to lose that amount in a day (wrestlers ex) and they end up just fine. as long as you are still eating and being healthy there should be no problem

no. Don't jump to that conclusion. Losing the puppy fat, if that's what you want to call it, did not do that. Even if you didn't eat that much. Now, if you were anorexic, exercised too much, and didn't eat anything but a leaf of lettuce, that might cause your height to be stunted. I'm 15 and only 5'5, and I eat normally and barely exercise. Exercise and eating right, sometimes a little less, can't stunt your growth sweetie. Remember, you still have 3 more years to grow. I'm assuming you're a freshman or sophmore, and you still have a ways to go. Many more years that will alow time for growing. SO stop worrying.
