Question Posted Thursday December 8 2005, 11:51 pm
I signed up for the school talent show. Suddenly today, I learned that it will be held at the assembly. And it's too late to drop out. I have a terrible case of stage fright. I'm singing a song from THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (Wishing You Were...), and it's going to be hard to liven up a beautiful broadway piece next to all the other singers, who are singing stuff like Ice Ice Baby and Alicia Keys. How do I relax?!

I myself don't have stage fright, but when i realized all the other songs people were going to sing, i worried. and i worried. and i worried. but then, on that night, i got up on stage and just let the song take me away. and that's what you should do. broadwaybabe629 answered Tuesday March 21 2006, 10:47 pm: Just Breathe. It sounds so trivial, but that's all you can do. You chose the song for a reason. Personally, I adore that song. I use it for auditions all the time. It's a beautiful song and it's emotional. Let yourself enjoy it and just have fun. If you're super super super nervous just get some friends together and ask them if they will listen. You'll get used to a small audience. This sounds really weird, but sometimes I sing when I walk down the hallway. Not like belting it out, but my friends and I will like sing and dance down the hallway [very La Vie Boheme-esk from RENT haha] but, as odd as it sounds, I'm way less self concious. Sing when no one expects it. It actually handles fear really well. Best of Luck!

keller09 answered Monday December 19 2005, 8:38 pm: what i do when i relax is i listen to the song so many times that i become tired of it also i just do a lot of breathing exersises and just don't think about your other competition also if you don't like looking into a crowd just look at the back wall and keep eye contact or do the same with one person you feel comfortable around.
I hope this helps.
p.s if you are religious maybe try praying and i bet you will be great. [ keller09's advice column | Ask keller09 A Question ]
Kattamarii answered Saturday December 10 2005, 4:16 am: Stage fright happens to everyone in some way or another, but once you get past the first few notes, you'll feel a lot better. Just look past the audience and at the wall. Completely block them out and just think about singing and the song. [ Kattamarii's advice column | Ask Kattamarii A Question ]
Mercy_x_Me answered Friday December 9 2005, 11:24 am: Relax, honestly. Phantom of the Opera is a beautiful, classical, broadway show. A lot of people our age are fond of it. All those songs by Alicia keys and what not are in and out. People love them until they're overplayed and Ashanti has a new single. It's always the next thing. I think what you're singing can be appreciated by everybody because Broadway shows never get "overdone" really. To be calm, just know that you are capable and you have to go out there and show everybody what you can do. Know that a lot of people might think you're doing wonderfully...just don't show your nerve to anyone or talk about it aloud because it'll only make you more concious of it.
Xxaddicted_2_uxX answered Friday December 9 2005, 10:03 am: if everyone is singing something current, yours will sound different and probably be more interesting. when you're on stage pretend you're the only one in the aditorium, it works for me when i'm playing basketball. if you forget everyone else you won't be so nervous. KiSSxMYxPEARLS answered Friday December 9 2005, 1:15 am: Well you signed up for a reason, because you wanted to sing. Don't let nerves get in the way of you singing. I really do love that song and i think you picking that is like..really brave! Everybody will get nervous, but you shouldn't be! Singing ice ice baby SUCKS and people only sing that because they sing bad. But you picked a good song that'll really impress people. Just practice infront of the mirror and your families until the talent show. =) Everything will be fine if you just breathe a little. Don't sweat it. You'll do great! And if you do mess up a little, act like it didn't happen, because if you make a sign that you messed up, people will realize too! So think about that alot.
sizzlinmandolin answered Friday December 9 2005, 12:23 am: Don't worry, everybody will be nervous, even the people singing "Ice Ice Baby" haha. It's very normal to have stage fright, but I can tell you this: once you get up there you'll do just fine. You're singing a much better song than probably anyone at the talent show and you will really impress the judges. Don't liven it up, don't change it at all. People will really appreciate your musical talent. This is a talent show, not something to just fool around in with your friends and lots of people forget that. The audience will probably like "Ice Ice baby", but they will definitely think that you were better. What talent does singing "Ice Ice baby" really show? I don't know if there is a way to completely relax because you'll be nervous no matter what. Try to be as confident as you can. Look for reassurance from your friends and family. Here are my tips for the actual performance. I remember when I used to be on stage I wouldn't look at the audience. I would look at the back wall and that helped a lot. Another thing you can do is bring a prop. A bouquet of flowers to hold would be really great and at the end you can set them on the stage as if setting them on a grave to symbolize what the song is about. You can look at and kind of fidget with them if you get nervous. Pull a flower out and look at it, I dunno, just be creative! I know that you'll do a great job, I can tell just by the song that you chose to sing and how serious and committed you are to this. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you win! :) [ sizzlinmandolin's advice column | Ask sizzlinmandolin A Question ]
TeenWillHelpTeens answered Friday December 9 2005, 12:04 am: I just ADORE these kinds of questions! Okay so here's the deal. Ice Ice Baby will make people laugh. Anybody can sing it, and it shows no talent. Alicia Keys may be more popular, but her music is really pretty. I act, on tv and in school plays, and I used to be stage fright. Don't try the whole "imagine the people in their underwaer" type of thing, because if you're like me, you'll burst out laughing. Just imagine that they are not there. It's just you and the microphone. The microphone's name i Mike and he is your boyfriend. He is gorgeous. Looks like an Abercrombie model and has a sick pack. We're talking surfer perfect drop dead gorgeous. It's his birthday and he loves it when you sing to him. So you are serenading him. You will do really well and probably win because a song preformed on broadway will beat Ice Ice Baby by far. And afterwards, you won't be annoyed with people laughing or teasing you, you will be annoyed at how many people have come up to you to tell you how good you were.
If all fails.. fake sick. But I promise that this will work, It always does.
cherry_chick05 answered Friday December 9 2005, 12:00 am: I'm a singer to... i had to worst stage fright you have ever seen.... i broke down a cryed befor.... And one day i had to sing in front of the whole intire school at an assembly singing "come home" because a solider was at our assembly. and i was so scared and i couldn't back out of it because my chior teacher wouldn't let me.... but you know what she told me and i haven't had stage fright ever since. She told me "You have the most beautiful voice and if you weren't a good singer you would know it and so would all your friends and you would probly already know it by know that you arn't britany spears or christina. And right before i got on stage she said remember you know your a good singer and thats all that counts and you should have heard me sing i don't think i have ever sung that good in my whole life. i sung my heart out. and you should have heard the school clap and stand up and cheer and yell my name. What i'm getting at is your a good singer and if you you want to sing wishing you were.... then you sing that and you sing your heart out because you know you can and give it all you got and you'll be better then all them kids singing alicia keys and ice ice baby. and about the stage fright. dotn' worry about it because once you get out there and see all them people it like totally drops. Sorry i wrote a book (made it so long) but i kinda thoght my story would help. If it did you can e-mail me at cky_chick2679@yahoo.com and talk to me. miss_thang answered Thursday December 8 2005, 11:53 pm: first of all, Ice Ice Baby is NOT a hard song to sing haha and you dont know how good these people are gonna be yet, so dont worry about it! Start singing infront of your parents and friends.. just perform what your gonna do at the talent show for them! Once your comfortable performing infront of parents/siblings/friends etc. You'll be fine!
