Math problem!!!!!!!

Question Posted Friday December 9 2005, 12:13 am

Hey guys,
I was hoping someone could help me with this math problem. I should probably remember how to do this stuff, but I'm stupid so I don't know how. If someone can, please explain how to do it. I would really appreciate it! Thank you so much!

Math Problem: The ratio of good guys to bad guys was 16 to 3. If there were 48 bad guys, how many good guys were there?

Thanks again!

If I were going to solve this problem, I would create a proportion.

Okay, so you always have Good on top, and Bad on bottom. So you make your first given ratio like this:

16
-
3 (16 over 3) So its 16 good guys to three bad guys.

Then you would set up another proportion for the ratio that is partly given.

48
-
x (48 bad guys over x amount (unknown) of good guys)

Then you cross multiply.

16 x 48
- -
3 x 16 times X = 16x
3 times 48 = 144

Then you can set it up like this, to further solve.

16x = 144

To get the variable (x) alone, you have to divide both sides by 16.

16x divided by 16 is x.

144 divided by 16 is 9.

Therefore, x=9.

ok make a proportion.
16 is to 48 as what 3 is to what.
cross multiply 48 times 3 and then divide by 16. this will give you your answer.

You divide 48 by 16. You get 3. Then you multiply 3 by 3. Then you get 9.

Answer= 9 good guys.

Edit.. Don't listen to the other three below me, they did the problem totally wrong. Number 1 and I are the ones that gave you the correct answer.

ok, well it would help me if i thought of it like fractions.

16 good guys, 3 bad guys. now you want to make it so there are 48 bad guys.

16/3= ?/48 48 divided by 3 is 16, so you are multiplying 3 by 16 to get 48 bad guys. now you have to mulpiply 16 by 16, to get the good guys.

16 * 16= 256. so the answer would be 256/48, 256 good, 48 bad

hope it helped

I get 259 good guys.

write:

If 3 is to 48 bad guys.
then 16 is to X good guys.

so 3/ = 48/
16 X

cross multiply to get

3X = 768

Divide both side by 3 to get

x = 259

and there is your answer.

make a proportion... 16 over 3 = x over 48..then cross multiply to get 3x=768 ..divide both sides by 3..to get x=768

there are 768 good guys

if you want to check it divide the fractions so 16 /3 and 768/48 ..they both come out to 5.333
