Opinions

Question Posted Tuesday October 18 2005, 8:04 pm

Well i have to do a project for my government class in school and i have to get other peoples opinions. I'd really appreciate it if you guys could give me your opinions!

My question is: What is your interpretation of this quote and how do you think this quote applies to responsible citizenship?

"My fellow americans, ask not what your country can do for you-ask what you can do for your country"

THANKS SOO MUCH IN ADVANCE!!

I think that this means that people shouldn't be lazy and hog the government's money. If they don't need unemployment, then they shouldn't take it etc. More people shoudl volunteer to do things in governmental facilities Like police should rotate through a cycle where it's like 9 months police 3 months jail 1 month something else. Good luck!!

That quote was made by John Fitzgerald Kennedy, president of the United States, who was asassinated on 11.22.63, when I was 10 years old. What is means is that we should be a publc servant for our country or to volunteer. INstead of asking for a hand-out, or like expecting the government to fix all of your problems, (our problems) we should find a way to fix them ourselves and then help others.
My notes: people who become politicians, like senators and congressmen or women, are considered public servants and have chosen a life of service to their country. (Although today most of them are filthy rich) Or if you join the armed forces, that is doing something for your country, but you could also become a volunteer for the peace corps, or become a teacher in an inner city school, and that would be doing a service for your country.
Hope this helps.
Michele

Hi there.

The way I interpret it is, what you can do to help the country.

Things like helping the economy by getting a decent education, then a decent job.

Helping the community spirit by being a law abiding citizen.

By politically voting for who you think the best person for the job is.

Stuff like that.

Also little things like, being energy concious, not littering, not wasting water etc. They are all things that in the long term will help America.

Hope this helps and hope you get a good grade!

Mel xx
