Question Posted Saturday September 3 2005, 10:57 pm

I want to start using tampons but I know my mom hates them because she just read something about a 14 year old getting that toxic shock syndrom from them. I'm active (like sports) and I'm really getting sick of using pads. I just don't know how to tell her I want to start using them because I'd get a bad reaction plus she's never used them and it'd be awkward asking her. HELP

Well... I actually am just using a tampon for my first time right now... it's kinda really REALLY weird but anyway... i was looking at the insturtctions and i red about that disease thing but i heard it's also really rare.. rell your mom its like 1/a million people who get it and it's just like going into a building... 1/a million of those building might be bombed the second you walk in... i highly doubt thats guna happen to you so its the same chance of getting TSS

hmmm well then. TSS is rare and its not just 14 year olds that get it. i know a someones mom who got it...yeah age wont change the fact that someone can be irresonsible. just wear them during the day and wear a pad at night. the way i did (i dont hink my mom had a problem with it but she was a bit surprised) i just took one of hers to try it out because i had cross country the next day then i just told her i needed a different size so she pretty much had to get them for me. so what you can do is just get them yourself at school in bathrooms or go to target or a convineice store near you, get some other junk and throw in some tampons. the box has instructions and be sure to use a mirror to help you. oh, and if you want to hide the evidence, get cardboard tampons...theyre a bit harder to use but you can flush it down because its completely biodegradable. hope that helps! <3

Okay, you're 14 years old- I think you should know better than anyone whats best for you. I do gymnastics and I would never even think about wearing a pad. It's a drag and plus- they get in the way, they're annoying, and messy! My best advice is to go ahead and WEAR THEM ANYWAY, and just don't come out and say anything to your mom. Get one of your older friends or something to take you to the store or something if you don't have a ride, and just buy them. If your mom says anything, just tell her that you need them for sports and you won't be wearing them 24/7. Anyways, hope I helped and good luck.

ok, toxic shock syndrome or TSS, is a rare disease that may occur when a tampon is left in for more than 8 hours. As long as you change your tampon every few hours, you should be fine. Over half the world's population of girls use them. In every box of tampons, there is a little pamphlet inside the box along with the tampons that explains it all and yes, just like eveything else in the world, there are risks to using tampons, and pads ARE the safest thing to use during your period. Tampons are cleaner though, and don't make such a mess. Here is some info. I found information on the internet on tampons that maybe you can show your mom, but remember, every girl chooses something different. What your mom may prefer(pads), as my mom does too, other females, such as me and you, may choose tampons. It all depends on what is most comfortable to the girl herself.

Woah, that's really weird. I know what you mean, pads really do suck, and I couldn't stand being an athlete & having to wear pads, that must really suck =(

You need to just let your mom know that you're not going to be stupid like other girl teens, and leave tampons in for longer then what their supposed to be in there for. Although, your mom is doing right by protected you from getting TSS, you've got to use them someday, and you're definitely old enough to wear them, no doubt.

If you don't want to tell your mom you could just go behind her back & buy them, get some from friends, or your school nurse? Or maybe, you could talk to a relative like an older sister, cousin, or aunt about them, if you feel more comfortable talking to them about it.

You have to let your mom know that this is bothering you, and you want to start wearing them, of course it's going to be super awkward asking her, but that's how all situations are, just make sure you have stuff to back up why you want to wear tampons, just in case she asks questions! =)
