Singing Help

Question Posted Tuesday August 2 2005, 12:41 pm

I am a 16 year old girl, who loves to act and I love to preform in shows. I have done many shows but my problem is I am not a singer. To be honest, my voice is pretty awful, so I can only really get parts in non-musicals or just be in the chorus for musicals. This is fine with me, but I love singing so much I just wish to improve my voice a little. Now I am not asking for a transformation that will suddedenly land me the lead in a musical...I know that isn't realistic, but I would like to improve my voice. I do NOT want to have a voice teacher...I don't think my parents would spend money on that nor do I want to be that serious. Are there any other ways of improving my voice? Any tricks anyone knows? Also are there any websites that can help you for FREE? Also what would be a good broadway song to sing at an audition?...my voice is on the lower side (I cannot hit high notes). Thanks You!

Am I too late to answer this question? I'm sorry if I am.

The book Singing for Dummies will help you, and comes with a CD. You are probably an alto, and if you are, some somgs from the musical Wicked might be of interest. If I'm not too late, let me know and I can actually coach you over the internet for free :) It's what I want to do with my life, so I may as well get practice. Let me know. <3

Awww! There's no such thing as an awful voice, just an untrained voice. If you can't get a vocal lesson, your voice is pretty much going to stay the same. Listen, I'm a singer, and I can tell you right off the bat that voices can only improve once they've been trained and their ranges have been built up.

As for high notes, I'm very sorry to say this, but you will never get anywhere as a singer if you can't sing high. At least, you could only perform in very, very easy musicals because female contraltos (girls with low voices) almost never get jobs. In fact, the only show I can think of that has low notes for a girl is Evita, but it's still very vocally demanding. But you can build up your vocal range so you can sing high notes! If you want, I can give you tips on that too. Just drop a word in my inbox.

Now for the audition piece: the very best song for an audition from a broadway show would have to be "I Wish It So" from the musical "Juno." "Juno" ran in 1958 for only 16 shows and it was really unsucessful, but "I Wish It So" kind of took a life of it's own after the show. However, it might be hard to track down, so I would buy it online

Hope I helped!

My aunts a singer and she says the first step is to learn how to control your voice. To do this, she suggest turning the volume way up in your car and singing along really really loud. When you learn how to project your voice while still controling the pitch, you get better a lot quicker. The biggest part about singing is pitch, i suppose, but if you're usally singing quiet getting louder will make your voice crack. If you have a lower voice, singing louder is actually easier. A good audition peice? hmm... i really don't know many broadway peices. But New York, New York would apear to have some good low-pitch lyrics if sung in the right key. Really, you just need to sing all the time. In the car will probably help.

Good luck! i hope you persue your dreams =)

I suggest doing what I do...pick one radio station that you really like, and listen to it all the time. You should get to know almost all the songs they play and you can start singing to them in the car, your room etc...it really helps.

Also, warming up you should gargle with warm water and do the whole 'do re mi fa so lo ti da' thing...

Then just try hitting high notes.Just do it.In your room if you don't want anyone to hear you.Practice makes perfect.

After a while, get some of your friends of family to judge how much you've improved...pick your really honest friends :)

Hope I've Helped,

"seasons of love" from rent or "for good" from wicked "english teacher" from bye bye birdie. theyre not high... get a few cds and lyrics and sing along to them. thats what i do b/c you cat get me to a voice teacher either. just keep singing to it all the time, turn up the volume a bit and sing it again. thats all i can really think of. breathe from your stomach, not your shoulders (they should be still at all times) try to mimic the artist and have the depth to your voice. i got recommended for musical theatre because my voice wasnt breath-y and "dinky". since you are a lower singer, you probably sing in your chest voice so you put power behind your notes if that makes any sense. hope this helps && good luck! <3

do you have a piano? if you do then go from the lowest key, to as high as you can sing. if you mess up you have to go back and do it over again. It gets vary hard and complacaited.

After youy did about 2+ hours on that... ask your parents to come down stairs and hear you! you coulfd of improved.. who knows : D

if you want to help your voice, if it crackles drink some ROOOM TEMPATURE water, it just warms your thought (sp) up and you are ready to go!

I'm not sure of a good song you could sing but I do know this. I'm a singer myself. You should try to mimic vocal artist that sing in your range. Try your best to sound just like them. Try to move notes like they move notes and sing in a style that they sing in. Try to sound just like them. Just work on that and do it constanly. That should help. That's what I do.

Quite honestly, it is very difficult to improve your voice without a voice coach or instructor, or just from a book. My advice would be to get one of your theatre friends to coach you and learn thier breathing exercises and such. It really is something that needs to be done in person.

To maintain your voice, drink lots of water, especailly hot tea or warm water with lemon in it and avoid dairy foods like milk, yogurt and such. I was amazed at the difference in my voice when I cut out chocolate milk for a week.

As for a song for a girl with a voice with a shorter range, check out Camelot, Then you may take me to the fair (You'll want a guy to help you with this one, but most of it is for the woman), or There's a fine fine line from Avenue Q, also any of Aldonza's songs from Man of La Mancha would be good for you.
