I'm a babysitter

Question Posted Friday July 15 2005, 11:06 pm

So, today, at the camp I work at, I handed out business cards to some moms and one called me to babysit for a 9 yer old girl, 7 year old girl, and 6 year old boy. I have accepted the job at 8 dollars per hour for 4 hours. How can I keep the kids busy. I don't want to color or watch TV, and since the boy is there, I don't know what to do...

buy the little pooper some comic books and ac/dc records and lock him up in his room. it builds character, as for the girls, do crafts...like rolling pinecones in peanut butter and bird seed to make bird fedders....GOOD LUCK!

I would bring books, games ( Candyland, Limbo ), stuff like that. Hope it helped

P.S. - a boy that age won't mind to color. My cousin liked it till he turned 9!

ask the kids what they want to do, and if it sounds like a reasonable thing to do, let them do it.

Heres some stuff that you could do:

- Make crafts. That's always fun for all kids, boys and girls, and it helps them be creative and stuff. But try doing something that doesn't make a huge mess.

-Try reading a book to them. Have them each pick out on they like so there's no arguments if one kid doesn't like the same book as the otherrs.

- Play board games/regular games. Maybe if it's nice out play IT-TAG, or play with a ball or something. Or if it's inside, then play HIDE-N-SEEK or just play with toys or something like that. And if the children don't like playing toys together, just play with them back and forth, have the boy near you, but play with the girls, and then switch, so neither is getting ignored.

-If it's really nice out take them swimming or to the zoo or something. Or maybe take them outside for a walk. Or maybe for lunch/dinner or something have a nice little outdoor eating like a picnic. Or take them to the park ( eat and play there )

.. I hope I helped!!

Love,
MELii

First off, ask the parents what the children like to do for fun. This will give you a general idea of where to start. Also, make sure to ask if they have any allergies or things the parents consider no-nos.

Try going to the park, the zoo, or a local museum. Kids love seeing new stuff and if you take them to the museum, you're providing an educational experience without them even knowing.

Doing a craft activity is also a good idea. Kids love stuff they make themselves and often treasure them for a long time. Grab a box of colored macaroni and a roll of string and let them make necklaces. Or get some cheap white t-shirts and bring some fabric paint for them to design their own t-shirts. Make sure to cover the area with newspapers so the paint doesn't get everywhere.

Reading to them or having them read to you is also good if they're interested in stories. Or even make your own story chain. Grab a piece of paper and start out the story with once upon a time and let the kids take turns adding to the story while you write it down.

Games like hangman, musical chairs, Red light-green light, mother may I, go fish, crazy 8s, and slap jack are also options. If you don't know what these are, just mail me back and I'll be glad to explain.

A supervised scavenger hunt is fine and appropriate for all ages. Go for a walk and have things on the list like a blue car, a yellow sign, a crack in the sidewalk, etc. Make sure everyone gets a prize. You can pick up inexpensive prize items at the dollar store. Categories such as quickest find, best in age group, and most effort given makes each child feel special.

If you will be feeding the children as part of your babysitting, make it a picnic. If it's raining outside, make it an indoor picnic. Lay a blanket down on the floor and serve up the food.

Another good idea is to have a talent show so each of the kids can show off their individual talent. Once again, give prizes to each of them.

Bring some dice. Have the kids do certain things in the amount shown on the dice. Examples: Hop 2 times on one foot. Dance for 4 minutes.

Let them make picture frame magnets. You can buy inexpensive picture mats and magnets at a craft store. Let the kids decorate the frames in their own style. Glue or stick magnets on the back and they have their own picture frames to stick on the fridge.

Hope this helps. Good luck in your babysitting.

PLay a bored game or something. If it's light out, take them outside and play a game. Or, maybe the boy just wants to do his own thing, if they (the kids) already have something planned just let them do it. Also, you can leave it up to them, they might have an idea for you to play withthem. Also, if you have somehthing at home you enjoy, bring that to play with. :)

You could do somethin like bake cookies or play hide and seek(make shure that its inside, ive hear some not-so-good- stories bout that outside. You can make up a game w/ your own rules. Go out side and make so lemonade or do somethin like cart-wheels and teach them somethin they dont kno...or when they get there ask them what they do for fun and if they have a game that they could teach you and if they say no them say well ive got one..even if you dont jus make up somethin.

Okay first of all, do not play hide & seek! I use to do that, I alomst lost a kid! It's dangerous.
Now I babysat tonight & we made these animals out of beads...there are boyish designs too! [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

If that's not a hit, you could play charades...kids love that! You could each write down 10 things & put them in a bowl or hat & take turns choosing!

You can also play school...incorporate gyme with a bouncy ball, art class, fake math/spelling quizzes, and of course make their dessert "snack time!"

Hope this gave you some ideas!

You should play a game with them that will keep them occupied and will keep them having fun. Make sure it's a game you will enjoy too. Or you can get them to do some easy fun crafts for fun.
