Neck Problems

Question Posted Sunday July 10 2005, 6:36 pm

Everyday, my neck hurts really bad. Sometimes it hurts worst one day, and feels better the next. I've got into this really bad habit of cracking my neck. My neck cracks so loud that my dad was a room away, and he could hear it. I've talked to my doctor but she told me to keep cracking it and stretching it. But I'm not sure if cracking helps or hurts me. Do you think I have arthritis? I'm only 13! Does anyone else have neck/shoulder problems? What can I do about this?

Holy cow! Some of the advice you've been given already defies logic.
NEVER pop joints, or crack bones intentionally. I've had advice from health professionals that it's very bad for you. Get yourself to a good osteopath, and tell them everything. They'll probably be able to help. At your age, the reason for something like that to be happening is either mismatched bone growth, or something bad happening. If it's gone on for more than a few months, get advice from a medical professional as soon as possible.
The doctor who told you to "keep cracking it and stretching it" is a grade A twit, who didn't know what she was talking about.

Hope your neck gets better

Well, just the other day I popped something in my neck and I couldn't move it at ALL. My suggestion, would be to go to a chiropractor (sp?) Because she would probably pop it back into place if you did something to it, and she could give you information on if it's bad, she could also tell you if you have arthritis. (which is doubtful because you're only 13.)

Hey! well my spanish teacher had some serious back surgery a while back and her doctor told her not to pop her back. I guess when you pop something it lets some air out but then it actually lets more in then out. When chiropractors pop things they know how to do it in a way that helps instead of harms. Although, I'm gettin all muh info second hand so who knows! Hopefully it helped some. In general I'd try to stop popping it. :(

I have this same problem! I've been having it for months now and all I do is crack my neck. It doesnt really help any, but I went to the doctor about it and she said that everyone has a spot in their body where their "stress goes to" ((her's is in her toes, i dont know what she told me this! eww)) but mine is in my neck apparently. The same could be with you. I dont really feel stressed but oh, well. She knows what shes talking about I guess. WEll, anyways, a couple of days ago I went to Kohls and got a new pillow and its like escpecially for people who sleep on their sides, and it made my neck feel 9278904829038492834989283904 better. I swear, you just need a new pollow, or it helped me anyways.

sorry, its a long answer. I hope I helped you, some!

A lot of people crack their neck, and eventually, it just becomes a habit. You should be careful when you're cracking your neck, because you don't want to do yourself any serious damage (and possibly damage your spine). It couldn't hurt to go see a chiropractor, and ask them to make sure you aren't suffering from any serious problems associated with your spine or neck muscles. They might be able to help you so that you won't have neck pains everyday, and you won't have to resort to cracking your neck to feel better. Talk to your doctor again about the problem, and ask if they can possibly recommend a chiropractor for you to meet with. For now, be cautious when cracking your neck, and although it feels good in the end, don't force your neck to crack too often, and just be careful.

NanakiBH answered Sunday July 10 2005, 7:42 pm:
Cracking your neck would probably make it feel better. Think about what chiropractors do. Same thing. That cracking sound comes from the synovial fluid between your bones when you force bones apart. That fluid forms bubbles between the bones and they pop to make the sound. You aren't damaging any bones. Anyway, there's no scientific evidence that cracking bones will lead to arthritis, so I wouldn't worry. You could just be in need of a good massage.

hey it could be problems with your sleeping position or posture. make sure you have a good pillow that is not to high up that you are forcing your chin to your neck and not the other way around too.

also, when your sitting around, do you sit with your neck titled to the side or forward or anything. try to always keep your head up straight.

if those don't solve it, maybe your doctor can prescribe some kind of pain medicine.

hope this helps- :)
