Right now, there is thunder and lightning outside and my dog is freaking out. He is a 2 year old Shih-tzu. I'm trying to calm him down by talking to him and cuddling him but he just keeps shaking and panting and crying. He is shaking so bad it's making this hard to type. Does anyone know of a good way to calm my dog down a bit more? I feel so bad that I can't do anything else for him. =(
Ryan_10 answered Saturday July 9 2005, 11:11 am: Well next time this happens you should eigther A. Put him outside so that the dog is used to it but by suffering or B. Put him in your room and close all windows and blinds and put music on and start cuddling and talking to him that way.
PrincessOfAdvice answered Friday July 1 2005, 5:40 pm: I'm so sorry this happened but unfortantly there is nothing else you can do. Puppies and Dogs have always are scared of thunder and lighting mainly because they hear thunder way louder than we humans hear it. Just keep doing what your doing because that is the best way to calm your puppy down. Also dont feel too bad about your puppy being scared your doing the best you can!
karenR answered Tuesday June 14 2005, 1:38 am: I had a shih-tzu and he did the same. He was so scared he would follow me everywhere when it stormed. He was scared but was also constantly looking out the window! I think you did the best thing. Keep him close to you during storms. Mine dog died this year and I sure do miss him...especially when it storms :( enjoy your little dog! :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
vintagerose answered Saturday June 11 2005, 9:17 am: my dog (whippet) does the same thing. i think its just the thunder. see, dogs dont know if there is a nucleat war going on out there or justa harmless thunderstorm! bring your puppy into a closet or a small room and just pet him and pey attention to him.
Although that could be a bit anoying when you dont have time, your doignt eh right thing just to hold him and pet him. theres realy nothing else you can do. Sry, hope i could help and tell your pup i said hi! [ vintagerose's advice column | Ask vintagerose A Question ]
lyDia_LoU answered Wednesday June 8 2005, 11:25 pm: Well, my dog is 13 and he's soo scared of thunder. If he's really scared we actually just put him in the laundry room. We started that this year. WE looove him sooo much! He's not an outside dog and we've never had him in a room like that before but it really helps. He calms down and eventually falls asleep in there- then we open the door of course. Put a bed or something in the room with him or a toy-something familiar. Well good luck! Secondly, I want to say that I know before I type it that your going to say that my advice sucks, because it doesn't seem like it would help. But, trust me, I've had the education and experience to know that what I say will help you much more than what your doing right now.
What you need to do, next time there is a storm, is STOP CUDDLING AND TRYING TO CALM THE DOG DOWN. Sounds mean, but it really really isn't. When your dog gets upset, and you run to him, cuddle with him and tell him in a soothing voice that everything will be ok, you are basically telling him that he is supposed to act scared of the thunder.
In a dog's mind, if you are "praising him" then he is doing something correct, that means that if he's correctly afraid of the thunder, then it tells him that the thunder is something that he really should be afraid of.
What you need to do is act like nothing is going on. Don't just ignore your dog, but stay calm, don't let yourself become scared, because he will think that your also afraid of the thunder, giving him even more reason to be afraid. Just stay calm and act like you don't hear anything. Act just like you would if he wasn't afraid of something. Don't scold him of course, but act normal. Do not give him extra attention or talk to him soothingly and saying "it's ok, etc. etc."
Next time it thunders out, try this. I doubt you'll get the miracle results of him not being afraid anymore right away, but if you continue with this, he will get over his fear of thunder and will be much better off. [ selectopaque's advice column | Ask selectopaque A Question ]
Saynotogymclass answered Monday June 6 2005, 5:42 pm: Do you live in NJ or NY? Theres a storm here too!! Well anyway. Sit him/her on your lap and put a warm water bottle on your dogs stomache. Also keep a clock with you. The ticking calms them down. When a boom comes just kepp stroking her back and assuring her it will be alright. OrangeChikn answered Monday June 6 2005, 4:46 pm: Aww,
well I would just be with him and take him to somewhere where he can't see the lighting and hopefully can't here the thunder. Make sure it's a well lighted place and give him a treat.
truadvice answered Monday June 6 2005, 4:46 pm: put him in a warm cover and put him in a small space like a 1/2 bath and sit with him ... if he is confined he will be less scared and rub his stomach that might help [ truadvice's advice column | Ask truadvice A Question ]
Draak answered Monday June 6 2005, 4:06 pm: I have the same problem with my chihuahua. I find that a room that is very quiet, like a basement room or middle room with no windows, is somewhat helpful. Cuddle the sweet baby up in a blanket, or if he doesn't like that, throw it over your head and make a tent for the both of you. Then all you can do is hold him, pet him, talk to him, try to take his mind off of it and hope the storm passes quickly.
And I know you feel stressed when this happens, try to be as calm as possible because the little guy will pick up on it and become more agitated. [ Draak's advice column | Ask Draak A Question ]
