Tooth Extraction

Question Posted Monday April 25 2005, 5:20 pm

I have an appointment tomorrow to get a tooth extracted. I'm a little nervous about the whole process because of course, the doctor told me "It's not going to hurt at all." Lets be honest, don't all doctors say that about EVERYTHING? For those of you who have gotten that procedure done, about how long did it take? How much did it hurt after the novicane wore off? How long does the pain last after the surgery? And does any one have any tips on making it not hurt as bad? Thanks so much!

I have personally gotten somewhere between 10-14 teeth extracted in my life. The only part that hurt me was thinking about the whole thing when the dentist was doing the procedure. Relax, stay calm, and don't think abou it. The whole thing will be over before you know it. And the only way to keep it from not hurting is to not eat or drink until the bleeding stops... then the wound can heal over properly. Hope it all goes well.. good luck!

I've had two teeth extraced that were split in two each by very frozen chicken nuggets at school X.X Its a simply process. They numb you up, first with a gunky kind of material and then a needle once your gums are numb enough so you dont feel the needle... then the plyers. They do it fast and hard. Not too much pain, like pulling a tooth. A tip, dont eat for awhile, or you'll rue it hours later. Try closing your eyes so you don't see anything big an scary to keep your mind off how much it might hurt and such

Here's a bit of additional advice- when you leave surgery don't eat or drink anything till all the painkillers/ aenesthetic has worn off- i did that when i had a tooth pulled and went maybe a minute before realising that my mouth was so numb i was dribbling like a goon all down my chin.

to be honest, it never "hurt" me at all. after the surgery, it was bloody, i had gauz in my mouth, but thats it. it just felt weird but i didnt feel pain. plus they give you special pain killers. it wasnt that bad. the only pain you MIGHT get is if you have that dry socket thing or whatever, but that comes later. my jaw was bruised, but it didnt hurt at all! good luck

it doesn`t really hurt that much. before i got braces i had to get a tooth xtracted and it didn`t really hurt. it takes about 15 minutes to get your gums numb and then give you the shot. the novicane only lasts for a few hours. you shouldn`t eat anything in those hours because you can chew on your cheeks and not feel anything because your mouth is numb and your cheeks might get swollen. if your mouth hurts after the procedure, take some tylenol or some other kind of pain killer medicine. it should help ♥

It really isn't that bad. Before I got braces, I had to get four teeth extracted. The only pain you will experience is when they inject the novicane; it's just a short piercing pain and doesn't hurt too much. When they extract the tooth, they are telling the truth, you really can't feel it. When I had it done all I felt were little wiggles and very little pressure put in that area. Depending on how many teeth you get extracted, for mine it took maybe 20-30 minutes. The novicane lasts maybe a few hours, and for me it didn't hurt when it wore off. Even after the procedure, I had to get a prescription of Vicadin (strong pain killer) prescribed by the oral surgeon. If it hurts for you, try Tylenol, Advil, or Aleve.

Hope this helps.
