I'm really having trouble

Question Posted Monday April 4 2005, 10:40 am

I've always been told that I am a talented actor. Lately though, I have been restricted from acting by my parents. This is due to my average and not superior grades. I've been trying for nearly 7 months to get the great grades my parents require so that I can do the thing I love most. I just can't get focused enough, I come home and just forget to do my homework after my chores. I am smart, and know that I am capable of good grades, I just can't get my brains together. I would like to go to a study group, but my parents won't let me do that either. How can I get back in my honor roll tactics, and into theatre acting again?

Hey
I think the first thing you should do is your homeworrk as soon as you can before TV, the computer or anything like that as it wastes time. Then work hard so you can get your grade up so you can go back to acting.

I hope this helps!

(not trying to be rude, but...) First of all, get off the internet. It's so easy to waste time. Same with TV. You say you "come home and just forget" to do your homework. So after your chores are done, write yourself a schedule every day.

Either a time schedule (for example, 4:30- math, 5:00- break, 5:10- English, etc.) or a to-do list (just a list of everything you have to do, cross off as you do each thing).

After you write your schedule (giving yourself time for short breaks!) be sure you stick to it!

Set mini-goals for yourself. I know your overall goal is to get back into theatre, but make smaller goals. For example, "When I finish this paper, I can watch my favorite Disney movie." or "If I can get a good grade on this quiz, then I'll treat myself to cookie-dough ice cream" A goals/rewards system might help you motivate yourself to take these little steps towards your overall goal.

Why won't your parents let you do a study group? Have they given you good reasons? I think it'd be worth a try- explain to them that you really are trying to improve your grades, and you think this would help.

Have you considered tutoring? Many schools have a tutoring center, where they match up volunteer tutors with students who need help. Or, if your school doesn't have this, see if there's someone in your classes who'd be willing to get together with you for a half-hour once a week to help you study the stuff you don't understand.

Get a wipe board or bullitin board to hang in your room write DO Homework or study for math quiz on it and put it somewhere where you'll always see it. If you can do your homework right when you get home and then chores. Explain to your parents if you get your homework dont earlier you can bring up your grades. Study for tests/quizzes at least 2 days before time.

I am sure many people have problems concentrating on things that need to get done, so first of all...you are not the only one!

Now about those grades! Here are some tips to not getting sidetracked:

1)Do a little bit of homework/studying (15 min? 30 min?) and then take a ten minute brake! It is almost like a reward system, where you get to take off 10 min for a snack or just to relax each time you work. Once 10 min is up, get back to working again, and keep doing this until all your work is done.
2)In school, talk to a guidance counsler about getting help from another student, perhaps during a study hall. This can be instead of your study group, and will surley help improve your understanding of your studies.
3)Ask your parents about getting help from a tutor.
4) Talk with your teachers, and go in for extra help in the morning or after school.

Now, once those grades get back on track, you need to talk to your parents calmly like an adult, and hopefully you can convince them to let you take up theatre again...all you need are your acting skills for that persuasion (and a little bit of luck)!

HOPE THIS HELPS!!

You were on the honor role before so you really know what needs to be done! Lot's of studying.

I don't know how you can "just forget" to do your homework. Have your parents remmind you.
Come on now if you can remember lines for acting you can surely remember to do your homework! :)

You have to persuade your parents to go to study group - why can't you? It'll help you loads! You could also write important notes on post-it notes, or sticky paper, and stick them up around your PC or whatever. Make a work timetable, stick it where you will see it. Maybe you could get one of those write on, wipe off shiny white board things so you can write your homework on it every night. Make a homework log or planner and write down all your homework. Check with your friends when you go online if there was any homework. Another thing you could do is create your own study group with your friends - it's always more fun revising with other people than by yourself!
Blessed Be,

Ask for a study group again, only name the benefirts it has such as
1. The kids in the group know a lot about (whatever subject) and can really help
2. it will help you concentrate
3. Tell them if they dont see a change from the group, you'll stop with the study group.

Go after school to a different teacher every day yto get help. Thats what i had to do when i got back from Florida to get my grades up.

If your parents dont want the study group, just meet with some people in your school library or the public library for the study group.

If you have a study hall..get as much work done in there as possible.

When you come home do homework first and then your chores.

good luck! i hope all goes well so you can persue your love, acting.
