Question Posted Sunday April 3 2005, 2:25 pm

I have this problem you could say, but whenever I find a neat, original band and I put their song in my info or something, somebody always steals it. Not only that, they think they know all about the band because they know part of one song. I know this is very selfish of me to think one band is labeled "mine", but I can't help it. One of my friends stole 10 bands that I once liked. Every song that I listened to, she went off and downloaded. I know most of you are going to say "well take it as a compliment, she likes your music", but the thing is I don't take it as a compliment at all, it's quiet annoying. Does anyone have any advice on this? Do you think that what I'm doing is as stupid as I think it is?

let me give you the cold hard truth and say nothing's original anymore. you weren't the first to discover any of those bands, so wouldn't you think it's silly if someone complained you were ripping off their style? the best you can do is enjoy the music for what it is, and if other people start taking after you, what can you do? if your group of friends ends up liking the same stuff, you guys could make plans to go to shows together. it isn't "stealing" as you put it, because they're simply taking your recommendations. take it as a compliment if your friends are following your taste in music. i'd kill to have my friends give a shit about the last few cds i've bought.

i go through the same thing.. MY music.. is MY music.. thats how i feel.. but if yall ever hang out you can listen to those bands and have something in common. thats a positive side.. just so search for a band that not many people know of and keep it to yourself.. you can still put the lyrics in your pro (like i do) but dont put the song name and band under/beside it. that way it sort of stays your secret

Believe me, it's the same for me.
I know how you feel. You don't want someone who likes EVERYTHING you do.You want some things to yourself.Songs and stuff you really like, try hiding from your friend.I stopped putting really good songs in my info after it started with my friend.

Eh an example is Green Day.
They weren't "that" huge before American Idiot.
But after B.O.B.D. became big, everyone loved Green Day.And when you ask them what their favorite song is, that is the only one they know. Not many people knew about all their other cds...just American Idiot..it's pretty sad when you think about it.

I totally understand what you're saying. There's nothing wrong with being annoyed. You have basically two choices. You can tell them that it annoys you, or you can keep it to yourself. If you tell, try to be nice about it, and if she denies it or gets angry just leave it alone for awhile. If you don't say anything, you just have to learn to not let yourself be affected by the lack of uniqueness in others. You are being you by listening to your music, and she is being herself by stealing other people's music. If you can accept everyone as they are, things are much easier. However, I know from experience that this is close to impossible and a confrontation may be necessary.

I am exactly the same way! It may be irrational, but if it's an indie type band that not many people listen to, I think of it as "mine." And then like if they get a hit single, and everyone starts liking it, I get really mad. I just try to keep my favorite, more original music away from my friends, and post things that are more common, or from bands that I don't quite like AS much. Or, you could post lyrics on your info, but not say who the band is. :-) Hope I helped!

I don't think anything you're doing is stupid... I have that problem as well. I have an Xanga account, and this girl ALWAYS visits it. I've read her info and her buddyprofile a few times, and she takes things I say and quotes I put in there and acts like it's hers. I haven't said anything to her, but I've said things to her friends.

Change your screen name and put it in that info and talk to friends that don't take your lyrics. -Or, put lyrics and put the wrong band name at the bottom. See what they do then. :o)

it isn't stupid i do the same thing! haha....but it just means you (well and me...) are being a little to possessive/obsessive. if it REALLY bugs you i think you should tell your friend but try to be nice, because i dont think this is worth losing a friend over. if you really dont want someone to know dont talk about the music or write it in your profile or anything.

i hope that helps =]

well it isnt stupid but i think your over obsessing. if you love the band that kind of thing shouldn't matter. she didnt "steal" it from you. maybe she just discovered the band and really likes it. now you can go to their concerts and stuff together so if anything its a good thing. it isnt a compliment to you its a compliment to the band. obviously she likes their music or she wouldnt take the time to go off and download it. i guess there isnt really anything you can do. just try and get over it. shes probably going to keep picking up on your bands. just stop putting them in your profile.

I don't think it's stupid. I know what you mean - when you find a new band, it's cool that only you know them and stuff. It kinda takes the 'magic' away if everyone knows them and starts singing their songs and stuff and pretends like they've been a big fan all along.
As for advice...
I would either -
1. Put a really crappy song from a really dumb band into your info (like...a line from the Tweenies song and stuff, only don't say who it's by) and see if your friend copies it, or
2. Just say to my friend, 'hey, it's cool that you like the same bands as me and stuff, but have YOU got any bands you could recommend to me? It's just I'm a bit bored of being the trendsetter and having everyone copy me, I'd like some new ideas off other people for a change.' Not only would that tell her that you don't like her copying you, but it would encourage her to think for herself and form some opinions of her own too.
Blessed Be,
Rach xxx
